Excellent book. Beautifully written, dark and poetic but often with a sly humor. Very well researched with respect to the history of Martha's Vineyard, the industry and tradition of whaling, and the general culture and politics of the time. All in all I really found it hard to put down. I would recommend it to fans of historical fiction, mysteries, thrillers, contemporary gothic, books about women's issues, sailing, whaling, and anyone who is simply looking for a good read.

I was very fortunate enough to win this book through Goodreads First Reads in exchange of an honest review.

Okay. I really really loved this book. Tim Bridwell's debut novel is fantastic. I never thought that I'm going to enjoy the hell out of this book. Because historical is not really my cup of tea, yet Tim managed to keep me interested with his captivating and beautiful writing.

It's poetic. It's dark. It's gothic. It's eerie. It's thrilling. And very imaginative. With a sly humor and a hint of

When Sophronia Lambert elopes and joins the Eliza Jane as Captain Folger's wife, her uncle Keziah Lambert and her love interest, Absalom Cook, worry that she will be “lost at sea” as was her late brother, Jonathan. If Captain Folger doesn't murder her himself, Sophronia may fall victim to the mental illness that has plagued her since she found her mother dead at the hands of her father.

Growing up on the small island of Martha's Vineyard is surely poor preparation for the brutality of an all-mal

Tim Bridwell shows us again why old New England and its historic whaling industry hold such magic and mystery for novelists. Thrilling, eerie, poetic and powerful, Sophronia L. transports readers back in time, to the American Civil War, and a sea-reliant community isolated by its independence and the disability of deafness. One woman in this silent world stands apart, both by her stunning beauty and a tragic past. But when she tries to right the wrongs in her life, she learns that not all signs, ...more
