Time Walkers #4

A Tale of Oak and Mistletoe

Rate this book
“I am Winn Neilsson, Chieftain Protector of the blooded MacMhaolian. Husband to Maggie and father to our children. Brother to Benjamin,” Winn replied. “And first born son to Pale Feather of the Paspahegh people, our Great Chief Dagr.”

Winn is a seventeenth century Paspahegh warrior, born with the blood of a Norse Time Walker in his veins. He has lived his life in service to his kin, first the Paspahegh and then the Norse.

His wife, Maggie, is both his staunchest ally and most challenging opponent – a woman from the twenty-first century who struggles with her new role in the past. Gifted with the ancient power of a sacred bloodline, Maggie is the source of a powerful magic that Winn is sworn to protect.

With ties to both the past and the future, Maggie and Winn’s lives unfold amongst the stirrings of a new nation. They risk everything to keep their loved ones safe as the once powerful Powhatan Nation crumbles and the English build a country from the ashes.

As history is made around them, Maggie and Winn fight for their future – despite what the history books have already written.

I expected this fourth book in the Timewalker series to be every bit as good as the preceding three, and it did not disappoint me.

The story of Maggie and Winn and all the complex relationships that they have across time and blood ties. It is essential that you read this story in its correct sequence as many of the twists and turns of this final episode will confuse you if you don't.

There are extremes of love and cruelty. There is grief and sadness, and happiness and joy. Close bonds are brutally broken; sometimes to be repaired and sometimes impossible to repair.

There is so much emotion in this book, right up to the very last pages. There are many unexpected twists and turns, but it all makes sense in the end.

The characters are so well painted by the author that I found myself falling in love with them. Occasionally, one of my favorites would be killed off, and I would curse E.B Brown for taking the life of someone I loved. Being a novice author myself, I can imagine how emotionally challenging writing such scenes must have been for her. I'd be willing to bet that she wept as she typed. I certainly wept as I read.

The whole series is terrific and I recommend it to all who read this review. I repeat my advice: read them in order, one to four.

‘A Tale of Oak and Mistletoe’ the fourth book in E. B Brown’s best-selling historical Time-Travel series draws to conclusion the adventures of Winn and Maggie. Ms. Brown once again explores the themes of love, loyalty, and family in a rousing adventure that brings about another confrontation with the English colonists and a new enemy who seeks to use the powers of the Blooded MacMhaolain. In the story we find Winn and Maggie’s children coming of age and facing the threats against their bloodline. When his family is threatened Winn proves once again that nothing will stand in the way of him protecting or avenging them.

Fans of the Time Walkers series are treated to more erotic scenes between Winn and Maggie as their love is tested…and primal passions released. It was interesting to see how Maggie evolved into a more submissive role for the sake of Winn and the society she had become a part of. Yet Winn knows what her Nordic blood and 21th century spirit bring to the table that still makes for fun conflict between the two lovers.

One of the best traits of Ms. Browns series is how well she blends it with real historic events and again she does a fine job invoking life in the mid to late 1600’s as we see the early rise of Jamestown and its effect on the native American tribes.

If there are flaws in the story it lies with an underused cast. Ms. Brown did such a nice job in ‘Return of the Pale Feather’ expanding her cast and developing the lore of her world and as well as a rich Norse background. I expected further development in this area especially regarding the use of the Bloodstones and the Nordic magic. I also wanted to see a better use of some of her supporting Nordic cast that seemed to slip to the background for most of the story. That being said, it never really took away from her main storyline and is perhaps better left for future adventures in this amazing world.

In the end readers are giving of a fun and satisfying conclusion to the series, yet as a reader, you will be left yearning for further adventures in the world of the Time Walkers.

I'm sad to say my journey with Maggie & Winn and all those they held dear has come to an end. E B Brown did a fantastic job of getting the reader to feel the passion of their love and it's not something I will forget anytime soon. To feel that passion and that love is something most of us only dream about.

Read the series...take a walk thru history and walk the path of those that came before us.

All good things must come to an end. However I wished this series did not. I so enjoyed the new world Brown wrote, a mixture of early American history with liberal sprinkles and rain of fantasy. The entire series has had me riveted and I could barely put each book down. The descriptions of early America has convinced me that I enjoy being an arm chair time traveler and appreciate the modern conveniences that I often take for granted. The entire series makes me appreciate the time I live in, regarding women's rolls and their independence. The atmospheric history painted, described customs and beliefs from different cultures, and how those beliefs may have influenced the unfolding Native American as well as the immigrant history. The book has caused me to understand that if the human race does colonize other worlds, that we need to review our history so that we do not jump to conclusions and eradicate sentient species in order to satisfy our expansion needs. I loved the characters in the story and cried when reading the final chapters. I miss the friends I discovered in the book, loved that the story and people has caused me to research the richness of that time, and has provided me with an appreciation of modern medicine. The last book in the series is the best wrap up I have read and is easy enough to read that you don't realize the mixture of truth amongst the loving and not so loving relationships of Old World America.

Upon finishing this last book with tears on my cheeks can truly say that have come to grips with the fact there are not enough words to express just how much the end of this book moved me.

The fact that this is actually not the ending to the characters of the next generation did not make an impact on me as at the turning of last page my time with the series is done as well.

E.B. Brown had me at hello.
Her series of time travel books seem to go on and on...and I am hooked. The characters are compelling, especially the heroine, Maggie, who finds a bloodstone on her farm in current times that taps the ancient magic of her bloodline and hurtles her back in time to the 1600s. There she meets Winn, a noble Paspahegh warrior, and eventually, they fall in love and marry, devoting themselves to protecting their people at a time in America when it is dangerous to be a native. Brown's stories, which continue into the next generation, are easy to fall into, creating time travel adventures for the reader as well. As long as there is another book in the series waiting, I have found it impossible to quit the adventures.

Every now and then, you read a book that has such a touching and satisfying ending, that you have an emotional experience. Or at least I do. :) This series was absolutely wonderful, and though I am so sad that it couldn't go on and on, this final book was precious. I loved the sweet ending and have reread that ending a couple of time since. I don't believe that E.B. Brown could have possibly written a better finale. This series is definitely on my all time favorite - will reread time and again - list. If you like time travel, romance, and history, you will love this series.

The last book in the series was much better than the previous one which was too short to enable the story and characters to develop much plus seemed rushed and ended abruptly. The last installment wrapped everything up nicely without seeming rushed to reach the conclusion. The end of the novel revealed how the first novel in the series began to wrap everything up and establish a strong connection with the first book in the series,

Fantastic reading

I loved the twists and turns of the books. The characters brought together to tell a wonderful tale of the people of the times before white men managed to destroy a way of life that was so much more honorable than what followed

I received "A Tale of Oak and Mistletoe" as an ARC to read for review. Let's just say, it did not disappoint! I read the TimeWalkers bundle (I love the term "TimeWalkers") and fell in love with Winn and Maggie, and I couldn't wait to find out where their journey would take them next. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone, but the ending was perfect! The entire book was so well-written, with a lot of twists, turns, romance and adventure. I would not read this as a stand-alone, as the previous books are necessary to understanding everything that happens. E. B. Brown is an extremely talented author, and I can't wait to read her next series.

The time period is late 17th century, Virginia. A different twist on the time traveling. Look to purchase the first three books in the series as one book. This is the last of four books. This series should be read in sequence. The stories do not stand alone.
