Piet Mondrian: Life and Work

Rate this book
Piet Mondrian’s rigorously geometric paintings in primary colors are icons of the 20th century that had a powerful impact on popular taste in art and design. This volume brings together more than 230 superb paintings with documentary images from the artist’s life. The less-well-known work that Mondrian did in the 30 years before his breakthrough to abstraction—especially his landscape and fl ower paintings—is remarkably beautiful, and to see it arranged chronologically is to enter the mind of an artist who is constantly looking for the next step that will take him from traditional realism to a universal vision of color and form. The book includes rare photographs of Mondrian’s studios in Paris and New York City as well as reproductions of more than 1,000 known works of Mondrian’s in black and white.

This is really a 4.5-star book -- the reproductions of the images are excellent, and I really enjoyed the essay about Mondrian's portraiture. I would maybe have preferred a standard biographical essay to be included, and I'd love to read more about how Mondrian's theosophical beliefs affected his art (though that one's probably a separate book). Minor quibbles though -- this one is staying on my reference shelf.

This artist had been featured on one of the Civilizations PBS shows. The book was too big to even look at & read. I guess my interest was not as strong as I had thought.

If you wish a good over-view of Mondrian - his life, his work - this is it...I found it useful in looking over his life and work.

One Mondrian composition in Centre Pompidou almost moved me to tears, and now I know why. To be reread.

I always like perusing books on Mondrian and noting the drastic change in 1915 with the influence of van der Leck, and never returning representational painting. You get a sense of this flipping through the complete list of works at the back of the book.
