Survive the infection! Survive the Infected!

Book 1
A new flu strain has been spreading across Africa, Europe, and Asia. Disturbing news footage is flooding the cable news channels. People are worried and frightened.

But Zed Zane is oblivious. He needs to borrow rent money from his parents. He gets up Sunday morning, drinks enough tequila to stifle his pride and heads to his mom’s house for a lunch of begging, again.

But something is wrong. There’s blood in the foyer. His mother’s corpse is on the living room floor. Zed’s stepdad, Dan is wild with crazy-eyed violence and attacks Zed when he comes into the house. They struggle into the kitchen. Dan’s yellow teeth tear at Zed’s arm but he grabs a knife and stabs Dan, thirty-seven times, or so the police later say.

With infection burning in his blood, Zed is arrested for murder but the world is falling apart and he soon finds himself back on the street, fighting for his life among the infected who would kill him and the normal people, who fear him.

Book 2
Slow Burn: Infected picks up the story of Zed, Murphy, and Jerome where Slow Burn: Zero Day ended.

All three have been infected but have not succumbed to the most pernicious symptoms of the virus. Nevertheless, their band of fearful survivors, have ostracized them.

Back on the street, with weapons to defend themselves but little food in their packs, they embark on a search for Murphy’s family while following a rumor of safe haven in the form of a doomsday bunker in east Austin.

But the world is more hazardous than they know. They expect violence from the voracious infected but they have harsh lessons to learn about the uninfected. And humans to support the infrastructure of modern civilization, they find that danger comes in many forms.

Book 3
Zed is saying goodbye to one friend and pressing forward with two new ones, Mandi, whom Zed and Murphy rescued from the bunker, is immune to the virus, and Russell, also a slow burn, but lower-functioning, childlike and docile.

After seeing the carnage at the dormitory, a raging, vengeful Zed wants only to kill Mark, his nemesis and the former leader of the ROTC squad. Since Mark has disappeared, Zed unleashes his fury on untold numbers of infected in his path as he makes his way back to the hospital, in an attempt to rescue Steph, a nurse whom he befriended while seeking help for the feverish Murphy shortly after the prison riot. But the brave medical staff, holed up on the tenth floor of the hospital, and running out of provisions, has decided to take matters in hand by exposing themselves to the virus, and shooting those who “turn.” Zed is determined not to face another loss, but time is running out.

A bio is a weird thing to write.

Just trying to imagine presenting the highlights of ME sets off alarm bells in my head. Why would anybody want to know anything about me? What about me is remarkable enough to tell?

When I think about these questions, I recall lying on my bed back in high school, headphones muffed over my ears, heavy metal blasting through my head. As with most teens, music’s power seduced me, and as I listened, I found myself admiring the albums' cover art (yeah, I’m old enough that I used to by LP’s) and I found myself reading about the singers and guitar players and drummers in the liner notes. Why? Because those musicians had created something that was deeply personal, passionate, and wonderfully emotional, and they’d shared it with the world. They’d shared it with me.

It made me want to know them through more than just their music. So, I read.

Through the years, I found myself reading about writers I’d enjoyed, historical figures I’d admired, politicians who weren’t dipshits, and business leaders who’d built great companies. Again, why? Who the hell knows? We’re all just people. I think we find each other interesting. We like to feel connected.

And that was my answer, at least as to the WHY.

On the WHAT I can say about me, for those who feel moved by my work: I’ll give it a quick go.

I was born an Air Force brat and lived in a dozen states before I graduated high school. I’ve worked my way through a wide variety of jobs, left most on a whim, owned businesses, lived through times when I had more money than I knew what to do with, and worried my way through times when I wondered how I’d pay the rent.

Life has been boring at times, and it’s been plenty exciting, too. So far.

I’ve traveled to India, stood atop the tallest mountains around, swam with sharks, smarted-off to cops, and been arrested. I’ve tried beer and weed, but never made a thing of either one. I’ve been brushed too close by death a few times. Thankfully, doctors, EMT’s, and nurses were kind enough to put all the pieces together again. I've ridden my bike so deep into the mountains it felt like I was alone on the edge of heaven, and I've watched the red sun sinking on an evening so clear it looked like it was falling off the edge of the world.

I’ve always had a hard time being where I am, wherever that is. My daydreams forever call from just over the horizon.

I’ve been asked by a dozen bosses where I see myself in five years, and I've lied every time, always telling them what they wanted to hear. Because the only thing I knew for sure, was that I wanted to be anywhere but there.

Awesomeness in the apocalypse

Love this series. I just finished the first three and have already purchased the next six. I feel rich in a new series to read. The characters and story are some what different from the traditional zombie series in that these are different levels of infected, which means bitten doesn't necessarily mean dead. I like that. Off to read number four

This is for Book 2.
This story just plows along taking you with it. Zed and Murphy are a real team now, they have a rapport that makes me smile. Turns out both are very smart guys and seem to be made for this apocalypse. Zed keeps in touch with a couple women he met during the fall, Amber and Steph, texting them when he has a charge on his phone. Zed is teased by Murphy for being a helper, wanting to rescue even one person. He has a pet name for Zed.

They have heard of a house that was built by a prepper that should be well stocked and protected. They get there and the bunker goes underground for three levels. But things are not as expected.

This is an exciting, well written series. Some occasional editing mistakes but nothing to distract you from the story. You will love the Zed and Murphy, who would never have become buds but for the apocalypse.
If you have not yet checked out this fast paced excited zombie series, you are missing out.
I will be back to review Book 3.

Book 3: Wow! This was not stop action, excitement and whites! If life had not been in my way I would have read this in one sitting. This is one of the if not THE best zombie story out there. And you know what? I don't think the word "zombie" is mentioned once in the book. There is a virus and some are immune, some are Slow Burns and some are "Whites". The rest of humanity is dead. Zed and Murphy, back together and I love them! So much happenes and I would love to tell you all about what happens in the hospital and afterwards but that is for your enjoyment to read. I have already begun Book 4.

I'm a shameless fan of the "zombie apocalypse" genre. It really has nothing to do with horror, but I enjoy reading stories about people overcoming adversity and surviving in a world that has been radically affected by a massive catastrophe.

I've read a LOT of books in the genre, and I consider myself a bit of an aficionado. Therefore, when I say that this is one of the best series I've read in the genre, I'm not kidding.

This book is one of a series of books, and I'm leaving the same review for ALL of the books, because I read them all in a back-to-back binge on my Kindle. In my mind, it's all one lengthy well-told story, and I don't see any point in trying to isolate each book for a review. The series is awesome. By them all, read them in order, and you will enjoy them!

So WHY is this series so good? Well, for one thing, Bobby Adair is a very good writer, and the books are well-written with interesting characters and lots of action.

In this series, the "zombies" are people infected with a virus that essentially fries their brain with fever, leaving them more or less mindless and violent. The interesting twist is that not all "zombies" are equally infected. Some zombies retain some of their intellect, and some remain essentially ALL of their intellect, although they cosmetically appear just as infected as the others. I'd never read a zombie story told from the perspective of someone infected, yet not fully mindless, and what it's like to experience persecution from all sides. The other zombies want to eat you, and the "normal" immune survivors don't trust you since you have the pale skin of the infected.

I also REALLY like the fact that the story is set in Austin, Texas. I'm a native Texan myself, and for a while I in Austin, so it was very interesting to me to read a story that's set in a familiar setting. Bobby Adair knows what he's talking about when he writes about what it would be like to experience the collapse of civilization in central Texas in the blazing summer heat of August.

I also really like the fact that the main characters are interesting. For instance, the character "Zed" isn't a bad ass who was a Green Beret, and he wasn't a prepper before the apocalypse. He's a bit of a loser, who graduated from UT with a philosophy degree yet works at Starbucks, and probably drinks too much and smokes too much weed, and is drifting through life thanks to a lack of motivation from his shitty childhood. He's not an angel, and he makes mistakes, and that makes him very easy to relate to.

I might also add that the book is laugh-out-loud funny in many places. The banter back and forth between Zed and Murphy is hilarious and very believable, and really made the characters come alive in my mind.

Read these books! You will thank me!

So Much Love

I've been hooked to these books. Completely invested in the story and the characters. My little heart is pounding right now, and I can't wait until i can finally get my hands on the next book! It's so refreshing to me when I find an author that isn't afraid to write the really real stuff. The kind of stuff so many authors shy away from because it's just too heavy to think about, let alone include in your story and shove into the minds of your readers. I enjoy that it isn't glossed over. I can't say enough just how much I love this series. A million times yes I recommend this series.

4 stars for the first book, 3 stars for the second and 2 for the third.

I liked the concept of the infected and to see it from the start. However it started to become repetitive and the main character became less and less likeable. And I hate the cliff hanger endings of each book.

I might give the forth a try in hope it picks up.

Good Z A read

If you like Z A books this is a good one. The story is internally consistent and well told. I don't like the profanity but it isn't to excessive. The books are worth reading and if you like epic length tales and\or Z A tales you should really enjoy it. Probably not a classic for the ages though.

Not bad for a self-published series. The author provides a unique spin on the zombie virus storyline, which is a good thing in a market that seems saturated with zombie fiction. I just wish he had spent more time editing, or at least had someone else look over it for mistakes before publishing. There were quite a few that jumped out at me.

Walking deadish

More like episodes rather than books. Good read nonetheless. Interesting take on zombie apocalypse. Might continue with series if on sale.

This is one of those three-books-in-one omnibus editions that contains the first three books in the Slow Burn series of zombie novels. My motive for reading zombie novels is mostly because my wife is on a zombie kick. I'm behind in book reviewing, and I should note that right now, I'm actually reading the seventh novel of the nine in this series. So Adair obviously knows how to grab and hold a reader's attention over a fairly long story arc. Of the zombie-related stories I've read so far, this is my second-favorite series. (First place goes to Mira Grant's Newsflesh trilogy.) Partly because the author doesn't rely on just-because explanations for things. In his world, the zombies aren't dead -- they're infected, as is the main character, Zed, who is a rare "slow burn," an infected person whose fever peaks at a low enough level not to destroy most of his brain functioning. So, while he _looks_ like the crazed, mostly brainless, cannibalistic, and savage infected people, he still retains his memory, brain functions, morality, etc. However, there's no guarantee that, over time, his condition may not degrade. For now, he's human, but most uninfected and immune people really don't like having him around, even though he can do things, in dealing with zombies, that they cannot. Before the apocalypse, Zed was a college graduate (Philosophy major) who was mooching off his mother and step-father, drinking way too much, and working as a barista at a Starbucks in Austin, Texas. It turns out that having survived an abusive childhood and his adult alcoholism, he's much better suited for living in the apocalypse than he was at dealing with the world we all live in. Adair weaves an interesting and engrossing story that is vividly imagined. Even the action sequences seem to have been well thought-out. Also, Adair's female characters are mostly strong and capable. While he does not spare us some of the ways that women might be exploited in a post-apocalyptic world, he is an author who seems to possess genuine respect and appreciation for women. If you're into zombies, I'd definitely indulge in a Slow Burn.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobooks of this titles.

#1 Zero Day
Sunday is a bad, bad day, and the week only gets worse.
Having been bitten, and passed out Zeb does the right thing and rings the cops, only to be carted away to a jail, that ends with a riot of blood thirsty inmates.
Teaming up with a couple of guys, they make a break for it, only to find the cops with "shoot to kill" mentality.
Yes, it can and does get worse than this!!

#2 Infected

Three of the slow burners move out from the university, as their rescued companions, now that they were armed, thanks to Zed and Murphy's scavenging forays, no longer felt safe with the three that had obviously been infected, but were not rabid.
So, they head towards Murphy's mother's house, hoping that they would find his family alive. The backup plan is to find the condemned house, with the bunker, and see if they could hole up there.
It's a dangerous world, and nothing can be trusted. Not having your wits about you will certainly get you or your companions killed.

#3 Destroyer

Zed goes a little berserk, once he finds the young college girl, he had rescued, raped and killed.
He then targets any whites, with the intention of trying to check on the nurse and her colleagues at the hospital.

One of the much better series of Zombie Apocalypse series

I picked up this three-book set by way of BookBub. I have read a number of “Zombie Apocalypse” series, and had especially enjoyed John L. Campbell’s “Omega Days,” Jonathan Maberry’s “Rot and Ruin” books, Michael John Grist’s “Last Mayor of America”, and John Ringo’s first four books in the “Black Tide Rising” series (and only belatedly realized that he has partnered with another author and expanded that series by another three novels).
Like those other authors, Bobby Adair has taken the time to develop memorable characters and build a world that is distinctive from the authors I just noted, and way superior to several clumsier efforts by other authors I sampled and then took a pass on.
The good news, for me at least, is that Bobby Adair has boxed the entire nine-volume series and priced it at $.99, and I just made the purchase before Amazon changes its mind.

Lets face it, when it comes to zombie fiction, hit or miss is a generous description. So when I find a well written example I like to crow. This "Slow Burn" series came as a pleasant surprise. It was well written and kept me engrossed through all three books in the bundle. I liked the character development, and the story concept was a different take on the genre. The pacing was done extremely well over this three book arc.

The third book ends in the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers. I really want to know what happens next, but will probably wait and see if I can pick up another bundle before reading the next books in the series.

Book 1: Zero Day

In this universe a new Virus has been spreading across Africa, Europe, and Asia. As this Virus spreads, disturbing footage appears of groups of infected humans killing and eating those they attack. The world is slowly going mad... literally the infected are losing their minds as their body temperatures go through the roof; so does their brain cells and humanity! Zed Zane is one of the many who are oblivious at the beginning of the outbreak but they will soon find out how big this situation is.

So Zed go's to his mom’s house and finds his stepdad, Dan, is eating his mothers corpse and then Dan attacks Zed and bits a chunk out of his arm. With the infection is burning in his blood, Zeds fever is dangerously high - so high that he passes out from both the fever and blood loss not long after the attack. He wake up two days later when the fever breaks and calls the police to help him and now he's been arrested for murder but luckily for him; the world is falling apart at the moment, and he soon finds himself back on the street, fighting for his life.

In the jail he met Earl and his cousin Murphy who he befriends and sadly not long after they breakout of jail Earl dies which is sad because I started to like him. :( And now Murphy is infected, so he and Zed have been taken to the quarantine ward with all the other infected people. The time they spend in the quarantine ward they meet Jerome Barnett who lies saying he worked for the CDC, (The Center for Disease Control), and he's an asshole who is too much of a coward to keep himself safe and throws all the work on Zed!

I didn't realize that Zed's eyes have became permanently dilated since becoming infected as well as he's skin has become extremely pale than before - he must look sickly pale at this point. The people immune to the virus are called slow burners because they don't turn into crazed cannibals by the virus... and theirs a possibility that they can turn full zombie like the rest if their temperatures rise too high and fry their brains - lovely. Its a non-win situation if that happens, damn!

And Murphy's a slow burn too, Yay!!!! Murphy rules!! I can see the ex-army Murphy and Zed becoming best friends further down the road. Murphy is always at Zed's defence and is willing to throw down anyone who gets in his or Zed's way - Best friends for ever man! They are both so loyal to each other and they haven't even known each other that long.

Mark's a prick and Wilkins is kinda cool but his 'people' undermined his decision's and he folds to their wants. And Felicity you wank-nut, Zed saved your life and your friend's, and you sell him out in the end because 'you don't feel safe with him around', well lets see anyone else try to save your life if that's the thanks your hero gets! Kicking Murphy, Zed and Jerome out of their own safe zone because they feel more superior than them because they are not completely human any more is a bullshit excuse to be heartless monsters!

Book 2: Infected

Zed, Murphy, and Jerome embark on a search for Murphy’s family while following a rumor of safe haven in a bunker. Jerome's now dead, its sad and all but he wasn't that nice or a team player. So the people at the hospital with Steph are going to drastic lengths to keep the immune alive by infecting everyone and who survives goes upstairs with all the survival supplies and wait it out for either help to save them or to be capable of saving themselves. Murphy broke my heart with his reaction to his mothers death. Major Wilkins came down with the fever and turned.

In the bunker Zed found a woman named Mandi and she's immune to the virus. Murphy why did you tell her about Zed's superhero name you gave him - you just want it to be a thing!! His superhero name has been upgraded to The Valiant Null Spot. Its still a weird name Murphy!! Later they found a house with its owner, Russell, still living there and now he's a part of the crew! Yay! And his got attached to Zed for some reason and I find it adorable and cute! And Murphy thinks of Zed as his brother and doesn't want him to leave to 'go save someone else because they don't deserve his loyalty, but their group does and they'll miss him' -awe.

And Amber’s dead :( - and now Russell sobbing from her death with a bit of a broken Zed next to him. Why can't my baby's be happy?!

Book 3: Destroyer

Zed said his goodbyes to Amber and is now pressing forwards to get back to his other friends; Mandi, Murphy and Russell. Zed unleashes his fury on untold numbers of infected in his path as he makes his way back to the hospital, in an attempt to rescue Steph, a nurse whom he befriended while seeking help for Murphy. The medical staff and soldiers holed up on the tenth floor of the hospital who are running out of provisions and Zed is determined not to face another loss, so he goes to save them before going back to his friends.

I like it that Zed is now calling himself 'Null Spot the Destroyer' while he's in his grief and angry sate. And now there are smart zombies that are criminally insane - great! And poor Russell, I'm glad that after all Zed went through at the hospital and how much life was lost, that he went back for Russel and the other two. He needs them, they are the only family he has ever had. Zed needs them to ground him and to help keep his humanity intact.

Action-packed

With all the zombie movies, television series, books, and graphic novels available, who would have thought an author could come up with something new about zombies? Bobby Adair did. With a less-than-likeable protagonist who just won't give up and a cast of great, if sometimes predictable, supporting characters, this book entertains thoroughly. And isn't that all we want ftom our zombies?

Kick back, get drunk, Dave the world?

In my opinion, well thought out p!it with very interesting explanation for "zombie" plague . More or less plausible characters and situations, better than some books I've read. Entertaining but also thought provoking with realistic prejudice against anyone 'different. Giving protagonist a philosophy degree is kinda fun except his 'personality' would make any highly structured learning seem impossible? All in all I think it was a good read.

Fantastic EOTW scenario with a bit of a (NOT a zombie virus!) sickness pandemic like no other...

Well, like almost every other I mean. Which makes this one different and to me, better. People can be immune but they are few. And there are the living who are finding themselves a minority rather quickly, worldwide. Then there are the pretty disrespected and much distrusted those in-between. They are the slow burn. Maybe mankinds real hope

Great action!

When the virus starts claiming lives, Zed begins to wonder if he is alone in the fight for his life. He decides to help a Murphy, a man he doesn't know but seems reliable. As they try to survive without getting killed by those with the virus, or shot by those without it, they have to be careful who they can trust. With no place safe, they must stay on the move, fighting every day, wondering who they might lose to this cruel new world.

Hard to stop reading. Really good adventure stories. Would have been 5 star except by the 3rd book, so many had sided that I was feeling hopeless and frustrated that the characters couldn't possibly survive. I've had enough reading of these and there are so many more books. Ready to start on another book entitely

Hard to stop reading

The first book I thought ok this is a bit short for a whole book but good length for part 1 & kept reading. By the end of part 2 I was hooked & couldn't stop reading. Now part 3 has ended on a cliffhanger & I can't wait to buy book 4.
Well written & a few little twists on the usual post apocalypse zombie stories

Typical Zombie Apocalypse

Although the series are well written, it reads like a typical zombie book. There are no new themes, ideas, or even characters that differentiate it from any other zombie-themed book. I

I didn't have a hard time sticking with it, but I was disappointed that each section ends as a cliffhanger - a prospect that I find her annoying.

Love where this is going!

This book is fast paced and enjoyable. A zombie book with a normal man making all the normal real learning mistakes that makes it more believable. With these zombies there is a difference that I really like and can't wait to see where it goes. Some have an intelligence! Exciting!

Post apocalyptic read with a twist

This is the first three of a series of 10.
The writer did a great job of changing it slightly from most other zombie books. It kept me interested all the way to the end, and now I am going to purchase the rest because I can not stand not knowing what becomes of the world.

Slow Burn

The storyline is excellent. One is kept entertained throughout. I do however feel that each book was very short and I would rather say they were more like chapters. I would like to read more of what takes place with Zed, and hope that and additional books are longer. A must read for all zombie fans

A fun twist on the zombie apocalypse

This is a fun series. Like a lot of zombie books, it drops right into the initial outbreak. However, with fast, freaky zombies with odd behavior and a main character that is stuck between two worlds, it's definitely a different spin on the zombie apocalypse.

Not for me

I found these three books to be dull/slow. The characters don’t captivate and I didn’t find myself needing to know what happened next. I will keep open to this writer because it may just be this series that didn’t keep my attention.

A pretty interesting zombie series.
Each action sequence has a clear objective that will have you rooting for the protagonist.
Each book does not stand alone. This feels like a longer story that should have been split into chapters, instead of books.
#3 definitely does not end the saga.
