Celia and Nonna is an uplifting picture book tenderly written by Victoria Lane and warmly illustrated by Kayleen West. It tells the story of the special bond that exists between Celia and her grandmother Nonna. Celia's visits to Nonna's house are filled with warm, cuddly moments full of magic and joy. Nonna's home is full of delicious smells, as they bake together. Celia has her own special cupboard at Nonna's house full of secrets and all her favourite things, such as felts and colouring books. Bedtime is particularly special as Nonna reads seven, eight or nine books to Celia all curled up and snuggled in next to her grandmother.

When Nonna's memory starts to fail, she moves into a new home where she is safe and cared for and people can help when she forgets things. The new room is bare and grey. It smells funny and has no stove. Celia can no longer stay, as there is only one bed and there is no space for her special cupboard. As she pokes around she finds some paper and pencils and draws the garden at Nonna's house. Through drawing, Celia finds peace and happiness as she illustrates all the beautiful moments Celia and Nonna have shared.

With each weekly visit Celia draws a new picture, transforming the once bare, grey walls into an art collection filled with memories, colour and warmth. This new routine erases the funny smells and strangeness of Nonna's new house and re-establishes the magical bond between a grandmother and her granddaughter.

Celia and Nonna is a charming book that will help many families tackle the issues of memory loss and the transition of a grandparent into aged care. The beautiful illustrations by Kayleen West are interspersed with children's actual artwork, creating an even more personal and warmer layer to this wonderful story.

Celia and her grandmother, Nonna, have a loving relationship with regular sleepovers at Nonna’s house where Celia gets the kind of special treatment for which grandparents are renowned. Celia has a collection of favourite playthings at Nonna’s house. She cooks treats with Nonna and when it is bedtime, Nonna reads stories to Celia until she is ready for sleep. However, when Nonna becomes too forgetful to live independently, she must move into a new and smaller home and Celia must adjust to the limitations that arise.

While Celia and Nonna is a picture book that explores serious issues concerned with ageing and change, the story and illustrations combine to create a tone that is both reassuring and warm. Best suited for independent readers aged 6-9, Celia and Nonna is also an appropriate inclusion for literature-based reading programs across all primary school grades. To increase readability for readers with dyslexia, the type face in Celia and Nonna is OpenDyslexic font. Teaching notes can be found here and illustrator Kayleen West’s recipe for Nonna’s teddy bear cakes can be found here.

Last word: the enduring bond between Celia and Nonna is an impressive affirmation of the mutual benefits of positive intergenerational family ties.

There is something so precious about children spending quality time with their grandparents. Every word and every image, beautifully interwoven by author Victoria Lane and illustrator Kayleen West, pour warmth and affection out of this book and into the hearts of its’ readers.

”Celia loves sleepovers at Nonna’s house.” And Nonna just cherishes the moments they spend together; baking cakes and biscotti, cuddling and reading bedtime stories. But one day Nonna begins to forget things, and she moves to an aged care home where she will get the appropriate support. At first Celia struggles to grapple with the new arrangement, but her resilience, sensitivity and love allow her to accept the change, strengthen their bond, and bring joy and ease to Nonna. Gorgeous sentiments in Celia’s drawings help us, the reader, to remember and appreciate that no matter where we are, all we need are the ones we love.

Kayleen West’s illustrations are soft, timeless and emotive. I love the meaning attached to the realistic children’s artwork that are significant to both Nonna, and to Victoria Lane. I also love the clever connection between Celia and the swallows who follow Nonna and stick by her on her life journey.

Celia and Nonna; a message of embracing hard realities, finding strength and faith, an uplifting and important tale to share, all packaged perfectly in a delightful picture book. Ford Street Publishing.

Celia and Nonna, by Victoria Lane, is the story of a young girl who cherishes her visits with her Nonna. But when Nonna starts to forget things, she moves into a home where people can help her remember the things she must. At first Celia does not like Nonna's new home; it smells like lemons and vinegar and the walls are gray and bare. But then Celia finds a way to hold onto the fond memories she and her Nonna shared together.

Celia and Nonna is a heartwarming story about change, adapting, and finding joy wherever you are. Illustrations by Kayleen West are a lovely addition to this picture book which is an excellent way to help children learn to accept change.
