The author Josefina Gutierrez really sweeps the reader in this book and gives the reader time to grasp what is really going on in the main character's life. The characters in the book are in depth and the reader walks away from this story knowing the emotional trauma that the main character experienced in her lifetime. Not only that, but the reader feels compelled to continue reading this story until the end. I stayed up late nights to finish this boo

Whole Again – A review of the novel ‘The Shadow of Loss’

“The more you know who you are, and what you want, the less you let things upset you” - Stephanie Perkins

Author Josefina Gutierrez’s novel The Shadow of Loss narrates the story of a young girl who is coming to grips with her life after the sudden loss of a loved one. Evelyn Gonzalez has had to suffer a lot in her young age; she was the victim in an incident the authorities are still deliberating whether to call it a reckless game played by

I received a review copy of this book for my stop on the blog tour at Donnie Darko Girl.

Have you ever looked at a book and just knew you were going to love it, like you had a sixth sense kind of feeling about it? After you've read the synopsis and then once you've read the book, it was everything you dreamed of and more? The Shadow of Loss was like that for me.

I can't resist books like this one where the main character has been to hell and back and must start life afresh, working through her p

Evelyn has lost so much and is having a hard time dealing with it.
After being institutionalized she is thrown back into the teenage world of school work, mean girls, and hot boys...
After everything she has been through, will Evelyn be able to come out of the shadows or will the shadows of loss consume her?
This was a well written YA novel with likable characters who will stay with you long after you close the book.

So so good! I enjoy sarcastic and witty characters. I liked how she was fragile but not too fragile, not willing to show others her pain. Those mean girls were something else though! It reminds me of middle school. I'm so glad I read both her books. I can't wait for the next one! ...more

While this book had a romantic insert it heavily focused on the main character, Evelyn, and her healing while was something I enjoyed as it made the book more realistic.
The rate of which the book progressed was both not too fast but not too slow allowing for it to keep my attention.
The relationships in the book were not believable and/or compelling.
There was a number of let downs in the characters and plot itself as it started out and progressed.
There is multiple errors throughout the book in te

What I liked: I liked the story, it was nice to follow a character as she learned to become a part of society after being institutionalized for so long. Evelyn was a character who grew quite a lot over the book, and though I thought there would a love triangle I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome of there not being one. It was nice to not have to wonder who Evelyn was going to choose if there had actually been one (lets face it, usually it's really easy to tell who the MC will choose in lov ...more

The Shadow of Loss is Josefina Gutierrez’s debut novel, and while I don’t like it as much as I do 3volve, it turned out to be quite an interesting read.

Evelyn has gone through a great loss, which she thinks is her fault. Because of that and a few other things, she has a breakdown and is supervised in a mental facility. When she is finally released from there, Evelyn has to adjust to “normal” life, make friends, and convince everyone- especially her sister- that she is getting better.

At first, I

A digital copy of this book was provided to me in exchange for an honest review.

I was struck by the cover of this book - two souls hazed out by destiny and fate? Nice work, there! The story revolves around young Evelyn Gonzalez and how she gets a grip on life. Having lost her best friend in a fire, thanks to a prank turned cruel game that goes horribly wrong, Evelyn is nothing but a wreck of her former self. Institutionalised, medicated and sedated, she is just existing and not living. When she

The Shadow of Loss is a young adult coming of age story written by Josefina Gutierrez. Evelyn Gonzalez had a nervous breakdown when she was in her junior year of high school, and her sister had her committed to an institution. Now she's being released, and she will be staying with Olive, her sister, while she completes her senior year in high school. This is a new school for Evelyn, and she wishes she could just stay at home and be home-schooled, but

I have never experienced the same kind of loss as Evey in this book, but her self-doubt, feeling of disconnection and feeling like an outsider are feelings all too familiar to me and I’m sure to a lot of people in the world. Besides reading about Evey adapting to life after the loss of her best friend June, I felt like this book was also a self-love book for the protagonist and the reader. Evey builds these new bridges with these two boys at her new school, Matt & Brody, while she and her sister ...more

I received this book from YA Bound Book Tours in return for a fair and honest review.

This story tells the tale of a teenager who has been through so much in her short time - more than some people will have to deal with all their lives. It's not been easy and it actually starts with her in a mental institution so you really feel her emotions as the story starts.

She moves to a new town but still has the same emotions and guilt to deal with as before. You learn what she has gone through at a gentle

Absolutely loved this! The teen characters were all so well done and made me want to read more. Her sister Olive seemed too good to be true, like the sister you grow up wanting, but that is if you read over how she left her and ignored her when she graduated. Then you miss out on how fixing their relationship is that much sweeter. It's sad how what happens to the character is so prevalent today. So many news stories and headlines, and people don't want to learn how to help people in need...peopl ...more

The Shadow of Loss follows the life of Evelyn Gonzalez, a teenager whose world is turned upside down by the sudden and tragic death of her best friend June. What makes it more devastating is that June was Evelyn's only friend. From the first time she defends Evelyn they become inseparable. After ending up in an institution, Evelyn must begin her life again. She moves in with her sister in a new city, attends a new school and has to deal with new people....and even love. Evelyn's journey is very ...more

I wasn't sure if I was going to like it but it was really good. I was lucky to see it. The relationship between the characters felt genuine. Usually ya books are all about the girl falling for the guy, but this wasn't. It was more about the two girls friendship than anything else. I thought the glossary was a nice addition too because I know Spanish but not German, which might be overlooked. Curanderas should be in more books. Why aren't they, seriously, they are so cool. ...more
