A Ripple of Fear by J.M. Northup is a coming-of-age survivalist drama featuring Dakota, a teenager in Minneapolis looking forward to enrolling in the University of Minnesota while developing her relationship with heartthrob Travis. Her sisters Georgia and Carolina are her closest friends, and her dad John is her hero and role model as an instructor in the military’s Survival, Resistance, Evasion and Escape program. It seems like the ideal American middle-class existence, before a geomagnetically ...more

This contemporary novel examines the life and future we all face. As our world is disrupted by man and mother nature, none of us know what lies ahead. Some people, including Dakota's family are preparing for the worst. This book takes you into their life as told by Dakota. As life changes because of extraordinary circumstances, Dakota finds that her parents being preppers has a lot of advantages. This book had me slowing down as I read because I was drawn into Dakota's story. The book sped up a ...more

Dakota struggles to find her perfect fit and world. She has someone she loves and a best friend, but somehow she can’t believe she is worthy of his love. She is also struggling to find her fit in the family. It seems everyone is so competent but her. This is strictly a Young Adult novel with all sorts of teenage drama and angst, but it is also well written and builds to the final chapter. Of course, you then must, absolutely must know how they survive the tragedy that has engulfed them and their ...more

This is the first book in the series, but wasn’t actually written until after the second book Fears of Darkness was published. My biggest complaint about Fears of Darkness was how did the US fall apart so fast? I just couldn’t see it happening the way Northup implied. Other readers must’ve felt the same way, so she went back and added more background leading up to the second book. Now, it all makes sense.

In A Ripple of Fear, we get to meet Dakota’s mother and father and Rae’s family as well. We

I received a reader's copy of A Ripple of Fear in exchange for an honest review.
I wasn't sure at all how much I would be able to appreciate A Ripple of Fear (Book One in the Fears of Dakota Series) because I am a middle-aged man and Dakota, the protagonist of this novel, is an 18 year old girl with sister conflicts, and boyfriend worries, and teenage angst and... You get it. How could I relate? More, she has family and friends that are quite eccentric and, in a lot of ways, almost too good to be

I have to say this is a great coming of age dystopianish (yes I made up a new word lol) book. In this full length novel we learn all about Dakota and her family and friends. I have to say this is a perfect suitable book for teens and up. Especially to learn the value of family. This is a well rounded book about how to survive when we collapse. It has a perfect build up to the end. You really get to know her family values and how to they live. I'm truly impressed at the build up overall. Can't wa ...more

“As I ran a few blades of grass between my fingers, enjoying the breeze as it caressed my face, I contemplated the cycle of life. As this year would host the long anticipated arrival of the Mayan Doomsday, marking the end of their long count calendar, I wasn’t alone in my ponderings. The whole world was focused on the potential that we would be the last generation; the witnesses of the world’s end.” 2 likes
“I didn’t really comprehend what was happening or how tonight had changed us and the course of our future, but I instinctively knew that things would never be the same again. Something had ended and something was definitely beginning, I just didn’t have the knowledge base to know what.” 1 likes
