Nick Turnhouse is now a senior captain, some two thirds of the way up the List, perhaps as little as five years short of automatic promotion to Rear Admiral. As such, he must accept more responsibility, and he will be expected to offer more than blind obedience to his orders. It is time to replace Bloody Nick with Sir Nicholas.
Bonaparte is committing the error of trying to place his brother on the throne of Spain, currently occupied by a madman and his erratic queen.
The Spanish are divided into at least four different factions nationally, and a dozen more in each separate province.
Sir Nicholas sails out to the Mediterranean to offer assistance to those Spaniards who will serve British interests best.

The British Navy & Politics
Wareham continues his series, which began with "The Man From Bere." However, the action in this new installment unfolds at a much slower pace. We are introduced to a new theme that serves as an undercurrent throughout the story: British naval leaders are now not only accountable to their naval superiors but, also act as instruments of the Foreign Office. As tensions mounted leading up to the Napoleonic Wars, naval leaders faced greater objectives and increased accountability.
This series has evolved to present a more nuanced understanding of the responsibilities of the British Navy. With the British Navy’s successes on the high seas, the burden of meeting these new responsibilities rests on the shoulders of its leaders.

Nick is given his old ship back and faces the challenge of building a crew from scratch. Demonstrating that it pays to advertise, he spreads the word and they flock to "Bloody Nick", a proven purveyor of prize money. Off to the Med to fight certainly the French, maybe the Spanish, and occasionally the Moors. His charter to rove, bring death to the French and perhaps some Spaniards who were in doubt about which side to join. Another fun read in this very good series. You might even be challenged to go online and seek an occasional definition.

This is one of the best Sagas by Andrew Wareham!
The “Bloody Nick” series is one of Wareham’s best efforts.
A likeable hero, enjoyable adventures, and well drawn subordinates and Superiors.
And his family life is an excellent balance to his success as a warrior.
I enjoy every minute of this series, and I believe I’ve read most, if not all, of Andrew Wareham’s offerings. Have not been disappointed yet!

Another Great Bloody Nick Adventure
This book is a worthy addition to the series and well worth reading. Ongoing story of British naval adventure during the Napoleonic wars that is well written, well researched, and is a joy to read. I just wished I could buy and read another thirteen volumes now.

Another Good Read from Mr. Wareham
Mr. Wareham has become one of my favorite authors. "High on the List" continues his long list of entertaining novels featuring Bloody Nick.
I enjoy his maritime knowledge and dry sense of humor.
I heartily recommend this book.

Great Book, part of great series
I have enjoyed all 11of the Call of the Sea books, the characters are interesting and fun. The storyline is filled with action. Andrew Wareham is a very good author.

Conscious Warrants no less than 5*
Reading this series so frequently found me consulting WIKI maps to gain a greater understanding of navigating the Seas. Never found the dialog to be wanting for wit or the pace lagging. Thx greatly to Mr. Wareham for his works.

Excellent series! Is this it?
I shall miss Nick and the crew of characters who ably support him. Great action and story line. The hero is heroic and modest and suitably rewarded for his services to the Navy. Very enjoyable read and I did read them straight through!

The characters are solid, great characterisation, some humour, history but Moro er a sound story. Thoroughly enjoying the series and one that credits highly the author s attention to maritime history in the 19th century. Great read

Have very much enjoyed the series but this final book has a rotten ending that leaves too many dangling and unresolved matters.
