To die alone. No one to care if you’re gone – or not – is a dismal prospect. Sadly though, many do pass away unnoticed. This is what Pieter Posthumus of Amsterdam’s Department of Emergencies and Internment job description is all about. He is one of a small ‘funeral’ team who visit the homes of the deceased to determine whether or not they have any family that can be contacted, any savings in the bank to pay for their funeral – and if none of either is forthcoming - then he gathers what clues he ...more

Lonely Graves – So many twists and turns.

Lonely Graves by the duo Britta Bolt is the first in what will be the Posthumus Trilogy an excellently translated work set in their adopted city of Amsterdam. What has been created is an excellent suspense thriller that has bundles of twists and turns. For a first crime thriller this is a winner for the writing duo as the plot is well thought out and well written.

Pieter Posthumus works on the Lonely Funerals team after being moved sideways in the City Cou

Lonely Graves is the first book in a crime fiction series featuring Pieter Posthumus (Pieter is relieved when others do not comment on his last name when they first meet him), a team member of the council department known as the Lonely Funerals team. I am finding foreign crime stories more and more interesting Perhaps 'foreign' is the wrong word; perhaps I should say American or British, as that is was what the market is saturated with. Seeing how the systems work somewhere else is interesting, even if it is fictional and comes with disclaimers about some aspects. Lonely Graves was no exception.

What also made this interesting was that the novel doesn't follow a cop. Pieter is a guy who works on the funeral team. It is through his finds, whic

I quite enjoyed this unusual mystery/thriller, but I did have my reservations about it. Set in Amsterdam, the protagonist is Pieter Posthumus, a civil servant whose job is to locate the families of those who die alone or unidentified, and to give the unclaimed dead a dignified funeral. Naturally, he is humane, empathetic and exceptionally diligent, and this leads him to conduct what are effectively criminal investigations on his own. Here he is looking into the death of two men in whom the polic ...more

The first in a planned trilogy by a duo of writers who have made Amsterdam their home. This is an interesting twist on a traditional crime novel. Pieter Posthumus works for the city council helping ensure that every death is recognised and that every corpse is given a decent burial. He approaches his work with a dedication that is not shared by the other members of his team, and it is his digging deeper into the lives of two of his cases that ensures that he becomes entangled in a terror plot an ...more

Britta Bolt is a pseudonym for South African novelist Rodney Bolt and German lawyer Britta Bohler. This is the first in a trilogy featuring Pieter Posthumus who works for the department of Emergencies and Interment in Amsterdam. The city pays for a 'lonely funeral' for all unclaimed corpses. Each funeral has music, a poem and coffee for any mourners that turn up. It is Pieter's job to find out something about the deceased so the funeral can be appropriate. In this book he is looking into two dea ...more

Lonely Graves is the first part of a trilogy written by Britta Bolt.
Pieter Posthumus, I love his name, is in charge of the lonely funerals department in Amsterdam. He takes his job seriously and tries to give his cases a decent funeral. One of the people he is trying to help is also being investigated by police in relation to terrorism.
I loved reading about Pieter, we also meet his family and friends who feature often in the novel. The part of the novel that covered terrorism was harder to rea

Meine Begeis

I usually don't read Dutch books translated. However, once I mananaged to get over the fact that I was switching between Dutch and English, I settled down for what turned out to be a wonderfully interesting and intruiging novel. It's so utterly Dutch- in all the good ways. Though, like any novel you need to take it with a grain of salt. At a certain point it seems as if certain sections of the city are littered with Islamic fundementalists, which is of course not the case. However, with a great ...more

For me, a sign of an enjoyable thriller is one I can finish in a short space of time. This one had me gripped from the first chapter and although for me, reading is largely a bedtime activity, once I had become hooked, I postponed my planned DIY and boxed it off in just a couple of afternoons.

A good plot and extremely well-written I thought.

Really enjoyed this bit of a new spin on the amateur slueth/mystery. An intricately plotted, well - paced, quick read. Smart but doesn’t take itself too seriously with it's very curious main character, Pieter posthumus or pp as he is known to friends, leaving no stone unturned. Set in the lovely city of Amsterdam where they really do give " Lonely Funerals". Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Dark doings in Amsterdam. A uniquely Dutch approach to dealing with those who die alone and/or unidentified sets this story apart from most crime fiction. Look forward to more in this new series. Pieter Posthumus is a fascinating character.

Atmospheric without being too descriptive. There are multiple narrators but the story is simple, direct, and told with increasing intensity. Politics and possible terrorism make this a timely story. It reminds me a bit of Louise Penny's mysteries. The characters are just as important as the plot and feel "real". Unfortunately, only part of the story is wrapped up as this is the first in a trilogy. Hopefully, the next two are already out.

An interesting crime thriller, with the unlikely hero being a civil servant whose job is to track down relatives of corpses found within the city limits in Amsterdam. Apparently if no living relatives are found, funerals are paid for by the city.

Posthumous (yes that's his name) can't leave some of the cases to rest, and as somewhat of an amateur detective he digs deeper to discover the secrets of his cases.

An interesting mystery with a complex plot and realistic characters. Readers familiar with Amsterdam will no doubt find the descriptions of the city a bonus; I found some of them a bit unnecessary. The multiculturalism of the modern city and its effects on individuals and institutions was well described. I think most mystery fans would enjoy it.

I wanted to enjoy this novel. I thought it sounded intriguing and a set in a different place from the norm, but it fell flat for me. Too much Amsterdam info rammed down your throat and the plot wasn't all that great. It's gone to a charity shop and I very rarely do that to a book.
