I have a little girl who can't get enough pink in her life. So these types of books always make it to our reading lists. We were doing a summer session on birds and this book was a recommended book. We picked it up and the kids both loved it (one boy and one girl). Wholesomely adorable and pink.

It was good. 🍦🍩🍿🍪🍭. Per hope - as she is getting tired the emojis are even going down. She liked the searching for the pink parakeet. She also loves pinkalicious. I thought it was good as it had some good lessons about listening and using that information later.

I loved that Pinkalicious used available facts to set up a logical and effective solution to a problem. What a great way to subtly encourage little girls to develop their STEM skills! Also, who wouldn't love a pink parakeet?

Title: Pinkalicious and the Pink Parakeet
Author: Victoria Kann
Genre: Early Reader
Theme(s): Birds, Field Trips
Opening line/sentence: It was Bird Week at school, my favorite week ever! Every day my class learned fun facts about birds.
Brief Book Summary: It is Bird Week at Pinkalicious’s school. The reader gets to experience field trips with Pinkalicious and learn all about different birds, from peacocks to toucans.
Professional Recommendation/Review #1: Kathleen Isaacs (Booklist, Aug. 1, 2015 (Vol. 111, No. 22)) The culmination of Bird Week at school is a field trip to the zoo, where Pinkalicious looks forward to seeing a pink parakeet but the parakeet has escaped from the birdhouse! Luckily, her bird book tells her just what to do. This I Can Read spin-off from the best-selling picture-book series is a Level 1 reader (Beginning Reading), which features a straightforward plot and simple language that includes a variety of bird names (parakeet, toucan, oriole) for new readers to learn. Sentences are short, no more than two lines, and use a variety of punctuation, including an ellipsis. Colorful illustrations support the text, making use of collage techniques and realistic bird depictions. Pinkalicious fans and bird-lovers alike will be pleased with this animal-rescue tale. Grades K-2
Professional Recommendation/Review #2: Kann, Victoria Pinkalicious and the Pink Parakeet
32 pp. HarperCollins/Harper 2015. (4) K-3 I Can Read Book series. On a school field trip to the zoo during Bird Week, Pinkalicious vows to see a "pinkerrifically pink" parakeet and uses what she knows about the bird to lure it. The plotting is a bit sharper than what the Pinkalicious picture books routinely offer. Likewise, the cutesiness and super-glam art are moderately dialed back, encouraging beginning readers to focus on the story.
Response to Two Professional Reviews: Both professional reviews indicate the short and simple plot helps readers focus on each detail in the story. The colorful illustrations support the texts in every case, giving early readers every conventional element available to them.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: The words are big enough for an early reader but do not take up the entire page. The illustrations fit nicely onto each page allowing the reader to understand the story through picture and text. The colorful and detailed illustrations leave nothing up to the imagination.
Consideration of Instructional Application: This book would be a great introduction for a lesson on birds. Different types of birds are discussed and children can become interested in this topic with this “I Can Read!” book. This could also be at a reading center, for students to become more accustomed with birds. If there is a lesson on animals in general, this would be perfect to integrate into the centers. Children could also think of their experiences with birds and if it is possible to take children to the zoo, this could be a great way to introduce the topic.

It’s a field trip to the zoo for Pickalicious and her classmates to see many colorful birds. The fun facts they learned in class help to draw out the pink parakeet that escaped from the house of birds. This level one beginning reader tells a cute story and mentions a few specific birds to identify and count as some are nearly hidden in the trees.
