Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer continued but only in comics beginning with the spectacular Season 8. Under the tutelage of Whedon, this ground-breaking series further developed the fan-favorite television characters and established new ones. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Panel to Panel-- Seasons 8 and 9 is a deluxe oversize book collecting the covers, pinup art, developmental sketches, and favorite sequences from Season 8 and Season 9 as well as the series Angel & Faith. Featuring art from such comics luminaries as Jo Chen, Georges Jeanty, Steve Morris, Phil Noto, Rebekah Isaacs, Adam Hughes, and many more!
This is a nice collection of art from the various Buffy series that came out as part of seasons 8 and 9. "Panel to Panel" is a misleading name, since it's almost all cover art and doesn't really include any interior art. I got this book as part of a Humble bundle, so I can't really complain, but I don't think it would have been worth the money to buy it as a standalone volume.
Beautiful art book with full size covers and variant covers throughout seasons 8 and 9, with some descriptions/context in between. If you own the library editions of 8 and 9, there is some overlap. Wish there was more behind the scenes descriptions on all covers versus just a select few - was cool seeing what covers were paying homage to classic covers from Jack Kirby and more.
It's good and the Art is stunning, but if you own the library editions, like I do, there's nothing in this book that isn't in them. I was quite lucky as I got it out of the library, but if I'd bought it I would have been quite annoyed.
This is really just a collection of all of the cover art for seasons 8 and 9 of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic books, plus some extra sketches from the artists. I am a huge Buffy fan and therefore collect a lot of merchandise and I like having all of the artwork in one volume.
The artwork is really fantastic and the collection is really inclusive. I wish here were more explanatory notes like the previous collection but I did really enjoy the art.
There have been a lot of TV shows / movies to attempt to move to the comic field after their time in the sun had passed mostly these fade away like the half assed attempts they are
Then you come to the works of Joss Whedon Across the variety of his work all these titles have been embraced by the comic field perhaps this is because Joss is an enormous nerd himself maybe it speaks to the quality of the work on the comic side
I think it comes down to the comic version not being written off as a half assed money maker by the people on the other end but the comics are seen as a legitimate continuation of the TV story line
all that said
this book is the culmination of the philosophy behind the comic series it is a collection of covers from the various Buffy-verse titles from season 8-9 (TV relative) Like the best comics this artwork is clever and fun
I might go back and forth on some of the story twists within the Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics, but there's something that can't be denied: there are some amazing pieces of art featured. When I saw this book listed on my library site, I thought it actually included the stories from the two seasons as well as from Angel & Faith since I haven't yet been able to read those. Even though it didn't, it was extremely nice to see pieces of art that weren't featured in some of the volumes. They were typically from the individual comics, so these extras were a great little surprise as I looked through the book.
Even if you haven't read Seasons 8 and 9, this is a great volume to look through. The art is gorgeous, and there are details about what some of the covers are tributes to. I also learned that Jeph Loeb was part of development for a Buffy animated series at some point. Anyway, this is probably the last Buffy-related thing I'll read for a while, given that this is the last thing in the Humble Bundle I hadn't gotten around to reading.
Panel to panel is a very misleading title. It's actually just a nice art book featuring all the covers with a bit of text here and there and a few sketches. A very lovely book; worth it if you like the series, but certainly not panel to panel!
Picked it up from the library- as an art student I couldn't help admiring the art work. Haven't gotten past the first couple of episodes of the TV show (plan to change that) but you don't need to be a Buffy fan to admire all the hard work they put into the art!
