Librarian's note: There is an Alternate Cover Edition for this edition of this book here.
Having retired to an isolated part of the country following an unsuccessful and debilitating experiment by the Navy, Tristan Taylor’s life is turned upside down by the arrival of an alien warrior whose ship has crash-landed behind his cottage.
With the realisation that the previously failed brain implant can now interface with the alien’s computers Tristan decides to accompany the alien in her quest to return home. When he is captured and imprisoned he has to make a choice between conscience and love.
Enslaved alien species look to him for leadership so he must overthrow everything the woman he loves stands for. His choice is victory or happiness. He can’t have both or can he?
I barely remembered this book which does not seem to indicate an engaging story. Dorothy Stephens has written a really good review. It is worth a read.
Before reading further, please read either my review of "Dark Horse", a fun book by Diener or Powers of the Earth (a sorry pretense of a novel) and comments from a staunch defender of the book, a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi).

GLORY TO UKRAINE !!!
The book meanders across a galactic scene that is listless and unmemorable. I vaguely recall parts of the book after reading the blurb. I can remember the major characters across all of the Honorverse, not one book of which I have read in more than six years. I can not remember one characteristic of this main character. For a story that is similar but more interesting, you might try Ann Christy or Cherryh.
The quality of the bulk of current science fiction is bad. The space opera and military science fiction is almost completely a collection of ethnosupremacist or US hegemonic fantasy. I thought that I would find entertainment with a little depth and the bare minimum of writing skill. That is not what Amazon is offering in the bulk of its selection.
I watch more science fiction than read it lately. Netflix is not the only streaming service but it has the largest selection, I think. The selection includes film from across the globe and is definitely worth looking into for science fiction.
I discovered Curiosity Stream/Nebula and other sites for educational videos. At $15 USD for a yearly subscription, it's a bargain if you like that kind of content. I have been using YouTube for bookish things and entertainment. If you prefer a serious, cosmopolitan community of readers excited by books, YouTube has a large number of book channels. Some of my favorites, including some book tubes are.

Author Rapey truly has a story inside, worth being told. It was very intricate, leaving nothing to the imagination and no faults could be made with the storyline. However, this reader expected a romance in all of its glorious detail, rather than a "fade to black" romance. Part of the romance/love in itself, is the way in which the two characters relate to each other during the most intimate act of love making. In the absence of such a description of their uniting, this is a book about tactical warfare. Namely, it focuses on how the Guardian perseveres to thwart those who have dominated others for so long that they think it is the norm by rallying and leading them to stand against their oppressors. Great, if you want to read a book about war, escape, manoeuvres, etc. Not so great if you want to read about the linking of two beings in a way that "fade to black" doesn't offer.
Surely an adventure one can get lost in. The characters were very well developed and very interesting. The action was continuous. The plot was straightforward, fast and very imaginative. I would very much recommend this book to lovers of sci FI adventure and to any fan of a good story.
An excellent Sci Fi! I hate when authors make up so many weird words that you're too busy trying to figure out how to pronounce them & what they mean, to be able to enjoy the story. This book had none of that.
This turned out to be a really good story that slowly drew you in and kept you there until the end. It was hard for me to get into at first and there are a lot of grammatical errors you need to read around, but overall I am really had I read this book. Please note I purchased this book 4 years ago and a revised edition may have been released since then which corrects the errors.
There are quite a few ideas wrapped in one action packed story. Sometimes the sequencing of moving the story forward felt rushed. There were a couple of times It felt like some thing was left out to keep the momentum, but overall this has some great moments of pure originality. Looking forward to reading the next installment.
Wow.. just finished the first book. I really enjoyed it. It doesn't have complex world building, intricate space opera, just simple story that makes you want to keep on reading till the end. You'll never get tired from long and tedious concepts of how things work in this story, just a nice flow of action, but not mindless action. I love it!
An excellent beginning. C has incorporated a few really good science fiction themes together. The pace is just right to not get bogged down in minutia but enough to care about the characters.
I don't expect much when starting a new series with an author I'm not familiar with. A totally new exciting story is something I'm thrilled about! Good storyline, excellent characterization and lot's of action. Even a love story, what's not to love!
Excellent story with good characters with attitude. The heroes were strong willed. Description of places and technology probably researched as seen believing.
This is going to be an amazing series! Action packed, fast paced, some light romance, just about everything you need for a great read. I was sad to get to the end but I'm glad it's a series.
I don't know anything about this author this is the first book I have read by whoever it is but I can tell you one thing about this author he is a master
Very good story. Lots of action. World building could have been more developed but I guess that would have slowed down the action. The romance in it was enough for this sort of story.
Nice plot and characters. Easy to read. I enjoyed reading this and so recommend this to a friend. It will be interesting to see what trouble TristIn gets into in the next book.
Did some one say something .yes another book I could not put down got so into it that I completely lost track of time .available. really good read you got to try this one.wolf
