I've given this a B- at AAR, so that's 3.5 stars.

I’m normally somewhat wary of novellas, as many of those I’ve picked up in the past have turned out to be lacking in substance, or have been put out simply as a taster for an upcoming series and don’t stand alone very well. But Susanna Fraser’s name on the cover of A Christmas Reunion was enough to make me take a second look, as I’ve enjoyed a number of her books and know her to be an author who can create memorable characters and stories with a s

I like Susanna Fraser's writing and, even though novellas are almost always problematic for me, I was counting on the author to make it work. And for the most part this second chance love story did work.

I’m not going to rehash the plot as the book blurb does an excellent job of conveying the gist of the story. I really liked the main characters. They painted with enough depth, maturity, and realism to make me root for their HEA. The author did a superb job of building sexual tension. The plot mo

This book is only an 80 page novella that takes place during the 19th century, and it had a little hotness to it! If you are looking for a clean romance, then I would skip this one. I could see this turned into a complete novel, really, the storyline was that good. I’m kind of disappointed that this book wasn’t longer for that fact there is a huge twist in this story that it is so shocking! That made this little novella one I won’t forget! It is SO shocking, you never even expect it, and it comp ...more

I'm a sucker for a star-crossed lovers story and a Christmas historical romance, and I'd been wanting to try Susanna Fraser, so I was excited to find the two combined in her latest novel. It starts by filling us in on what's happened in the past and what is happening with the present and sets our hero and heroine on a Christmas collision course. Much has changed in the five years since Cat and Gabriel have seen each other, yet much remains the same, including their feelings for each other. But C ...more

I think this little historical novella might be my favorite holiday read so far this season. While I'm not much for romance novels, and this is deemed a historical romance, it was not over the top with the romance. In fact, I found the historical accuracy and the storytelling to be much like straight historical fiction.

Gabe is such an admirable character. Who couldn't help but fall in love with him? And I admired Cat's independence and being of her own mind. The characters and the story likened
In general Fraser is a fairly reliable writer of regency romance, a little heavier on the historical detail than wallpaper historicals. This novella is short but sweet; I feel like really it was a little too short, and maybe a little too sweet (I'm not a big fan of The Hero Adopts A Plot Moppet, What Now?), but over all it was a fun read. That said, it did do one thing which I kind of hate, although I feel like over all Fraser handled it as well as she could (although was it necessary, really?): ...more

3.5 Maybe not as Christmas-y as it could have been but I like Fraser's style and this was a good one. Right when I started to get worried that things would take a turn for the worse before the HEA I remembered it was a novella and that the good things could likely just be trusted because there weren't another 100+ pages to fill with angst. ...more

A nice, sweet holiday romance novella, A Christmas Reunion was a good read. Not the best or the most memorable, but an enjoyable way to pass the time.

The characters in the book were good. Cat was loyal and true to her word. She had her own sense of honor and always followed it. Gabe was sweet and I loved how gentle he was with Ellen, the little orphan he found. He was wonderful and all around adorable.

The romance was good. I did think that Cat and Gabe were great together and it was sweet that

I received this novella from Net Galley for an honest review, and I’m so glad I had the privilege of reading this delightful Christmas tale. Susanna Fraser has a graceful, flowing writing style that engaged me from the first page and kept me in its thrall to the last. She has penned a heart-warming second chance at love story. This story has an incredible twist near the end that I never saw coming. Since the book blurb does an excellent job of conveying the gist of the story, I have chosen to re ...more

Susanna Fraser delivers a fun and heartwarming novella in “A Christmas Reunion.” I never read Fraser before so I was not sure what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed reading the novella.

When the story begins we have our hero-Gabriel Shephard. Gabriel is a soldier. He is home for the holidays but he has a little girl with him. He is responsible for her. Gabriel had a falling out with his family and doesn’t go directly to visit his family, instead he sends a letter explaining why h

A short story of second chance star cross lovers. From other reviewers Susanna Fraser is known for creating memorable characters, so I decided to give her novella a try.

First, I must admit I am not a fan of novellas due to lack of details. The same is true for this story. I like that second chance themes require a backstory. Gabe an orphan since birth, reared by his uncle and Kitty, his cousins' cousin, also awarded to the same uncle at the age of sixteen have been in love since their first meet

This was a sticky story. Susanna did a good job working up her story line. The characters were quite busy in this story in a good way. Cat was raised with Gabe and they denied their feelings for each other. He was a foundling and felt below everyone. He was sent to the military. Cat waited for him but finally found someone to marry. Then Gabe returns with a baby girl he found as a stowaway. Here is where the major spoiler shows up. Cat chooses not to marry her gentleman but to go after Gabe agai ...more

I enjoyed Fraser's THE SERGEANT'S LADY and appreciated, in particular, her sensitive handling of the cross-class trope in a historical romance. I was looking forward to the same in this Christmas novella about the returning Captain Gabriel and his Lady Cat ... alas, while the first half was fabulously promising, atmospheric, and ethically complex, the second half was contrived and abrupt in its conclusioin. Full disclosure: Susanna is my critique partner.

A sweet, passionate, charming (and festive!) Christmas novella. I loved Cat immediately and she and Gabe deal with a painful and complicated situation (Gabe was sent into the army 5 years ago because he and Cat were found in a compromising situation, and now he's back for Christmas and she's engaged to someone else) with surprising maturity. Also Gabe's adorable orphan is SUPER adorable. And Cat's Boring Fiancé wasn't boring at all! A+++++

There are so many things to love in this second chance Christmas novella. It has wassail songs and reunited family and love for everyone and forgiveness. It has a glorious, gruff yet sensitive hero who is absolutely besotted by the heroine (and by the orphaned toddler who ended up in his care). It made me smile and, at the end, cheer. It was exactly what I needed when I read it.
