Relina Skye is a pen name. The author enjoys writing romance novels with a mythological twist. As a history major she learned that there is a story behind every action and choice that people make. The question, "what if?" sparks her curiosity allowing for her to create new worlds.
When Relina Skye is not writing about mythology and folklore, she enjoys being an aunt.
Relina would love to hear from you. Your feedback is incredibly valuable.
I had the pleasure of reading In-Between Work and Play as a Beta Reader and I am glad that I was given the opportunity to read this book! It was such a great read, quick but, full of mythology, intrigue, and romance. Jocelyn is a demigoddess who is in charge of finding out a contraceptive method that works for her highly fertile clients. The series of events that follow will take her and her friends on adventure laced with mystery and magic. I promise you wont see what's coming in the end! I thought that the characters were really well developed and that I got a good sense of who they were...I just wanted to know more about everything! I hope that there is another book in the works because I know that traveling to Jocelyn's world again is something that I would want to do!
**Book provided by the author for an honest review**
Jocelyn Frost is a twenty something demigodess virgin. She lives in the "In-Between" (this is the space between Earth and Erda) after being recruited from the Bureau of Converging Worlds to work her ten-year tenure. Jocelyn's job seems to fit her very well as a counselor to the like, being that she is the daughter of Norse, the God of Light and her inherited ability is to radiate calm and tranquility to those around her. During one of her group sessions, the topic roles into sex very easily by the women and, specifically into how to keep from getting pregnant! When demigods and demigodesses mate, pregnancy results 100% of the time, and human contraception does not work on them, most likely because of their heritage, so therefore, they either don't have sex, they have sex and produce multiples, or they fornicate with other species. During this session Jocelyn is being monitored by her supervisor, Inez Cannas, for her yearly review. Jocelyn and Inez have a very shaky relationship as it is, so when Jocelyn is put on the spot to be the one to come up with an idea or solution to this problem, Inez gives her until her next group session to present her with the solution.
The concept behind this story was very original and entertaining. I'm pretty sure I've never read or watched anything that came close to demigods looking for contraceptives! It may or may not sound silly to you, but until you read it, you will never know how great the story is. This In-between world that was built into the story was very detailed and believable, also with Erda. There are so many differences between Erda, In-Between and Earth that you could not compare. Granted, In-Between was modeled from Earth on it's appearance, but that is where the similarities stop. The structure of the society is totally unique to the races that live there, which is why Jocelyn still struggles with a social life. Jocelyn was raised by her human mother on Earth her whole life but knowing who her father really was.
The characters were abundant and colorful. During Jocelyn's research for her mission, she arrives at the Archives, the library of all basically, lol. There, she meets Declan Rivers, a demigod. Declan is a man of average height, thin but muscular build, with a handsome face and geeky personality, and he works there! Declan immediately jumps in to help Jocelyn with her research just to be near her. The two hit it off all to well very quickly, and he becomes an integral part of her life, the story, and her understanding of the gods' history. Then, there is Carmine.........sigh. He is an 800-year-old Light Elf that works with Jocelyn at the BCW as a counselor. Carmine offers friendship and sound advice when she needs it. When Declan and Jocelyn get better acquainted, we meet his house mates- twins, Hamish and Finley. They are demigods as well, and pieces of work they are! At first, I wasn't sure if I liked them because of their blase attitude toward women and the playful jokes they pull on Jocelyn, but in the end, they won me over, and I absolutely loved them!
During their trek to seek the ultimate contraception, Jocelyn and Declan get closer and closer- to each other but not to what the random attacks on them are all about! There seem to be multiple things going on in the story at the same time that don't add up, but I'm sure this is an indication of how deep the story will get with these layers, and they kept me actively involved in this world. I was truly interested in how the In-Between and Erda worked with lots of OMG!...to LOL!....to Gross... The author gets very descriptive sometimes which gave it a good balance, just enough for your imagination to take over and fill in the blanks. I absolutely will continue on with this series, it was wonderful!
Welcome to the world of gods, demigoddesses , elves, cat sidhe and fae!!! Relina Skye introduces you to the world of Norse, Egyptian and Gaelic mythology in In-Between Work and Play.
I loved this book and recommend it to read. It is like a mix and match of mythological characters, cute ones, ugly ones, scary ones and some down right horny ones...yes you read it. But don't let horny mythological creatures let you think otherwise the story line and characters have been well thought out and planned. And while it might appear to be a simple story in the beginning, it becomes a labyrinth of plots and characters. I usually shy away from books with so many mythology characters because I have a hard time keeping track of who does what, but with the way In-Between has been written, that is not a problem. There is also a glossary of terms if you want to be more definition and I found it useful.
I am looking forward to reading more from Relina Skye and looking forward to see the continuation of Jocelyn Frost's adventures.
There is a lot going on in this book. I did enjoy the read, but the pace was on the slow side in spots. There is a lot going on and some things don’t quite get resolved, though that could be a set up for the next in the series. It’s definitely an interesting concept and I’m looking forward to seeing where the Jocelyn Frost series goes. I'll be adding the next installment to my "to-read" list.
In Between Work and Play by Relina Skye is the first in the Jocelyn Frost series. Jocelyn is a demigoddess on a mission, and its getting dangerous.
Jocelyn is a therapist for Demigoddess Anonymous and her therapy group has asked her to look into reliable contraception for the extremely fertile demigod/demigoddess community. When she accepts, she's thrown into an adventure bigger than she thought. She meets a sexy librarian from the arrives, Declan, and he helps her on her quest.
Along the way, there's a couple subplots that make an appearance. One involving vampires and another involving warlocks, but I won't give away too much here. Between the three interwoven adventures, Jocelyn and Dex have a lot on their plates.
I enjoyed the book, although there were parts that were a little slow. This is the first in a series, and so a couple of the subplots weren't really resolved in this book. I'm guessing that's coming in book two. There's a lot of descriptive parts, but that comes with a new world and pantheons that readers are at first unfamiliar with.
This is a story about demigoddesses and other mythological and other worldly characters. The main emphasis of this story seems to be sex There is a subtle story line that has to do with dark forces and something Jocelyn, the main character, has that they want. I would have liked more of this story line to have been developed so that I could have gotten deeper into the book. Otherwise, I found this a very light read with not much depth.
