Lewis was always the lazy kid in school. After a harrowing hospital visit, he wakes up as a dragon. It's awesome, but he doesn't know the first thing about using his new body! Why is everything so fragile? And since when have people been so tasty?
When he reveals himself to his friends, they don't know what to think. He's still Lewis, but he's also something a lot more dangerous. When he eats something he shouldn't have, the wrong people find out. Now, it's up to his friends to keep him out of trouble or risk losing him in the process. With dangers closing in on all sides, staying safe and in control is getting hard. But being a hungry dragon is even harder....
It's a decent little story if you're in it for dragon transformation. It's not very complicated, though the themes get pretty dark, especially towards the end. It's actually a very shitty situation the protagonist finds himself in, not the least of which because the protagonist's mind itself has not gone through the transformation process entirely unscathed.
The book probably isn't for everyone. Minor spoilers ahead: The main character struggles with the desire to eat humans and a skewed sense of morality that came along with the transformation. It's probably off putting for most people and will make the main character difficult to sympathize with. But, I'm still looking forward to seeing where the story goes from here. It seems like there is still a lot of ground to cover here.
Love it, it depicts a picture of modern world together with dragon! The parts that describe how the protagonist deal with being a blood-thirsty dragon and the inner fights to it make things much much more intersting.
Generally a good book, but beware there are some gore passages. Also, some of the story gets out of the standards you would have for a casual story. So really nice!
I like it, but not much happens after the transformation, until the very end.
First off, I like this book. The transformation itself and all the implications that come with it are good. That said, it does feel like a bit of a cartoon world, where people do not quite act as I imagine they would.
The MC, for starters, should listen to the one character who knows anything about dragons after they become one, and it would help if that mentor character were a little more constant. One moment, he wants to kill the MC; the other, he admits he's wrong.
Then there are the humans. Oh, boy. This feels like one of those Transformers or Godzilla movies where every time the humans are on screen, I sigh. Every human chapter, all I wanted was to get it over with and get back to the dragon. That said, I also feel like this story's instance of talking about eating them all the time is also a bit much. This book talks a lot about food, and does not shy away from the gruesome details of an animal attack.
He is a dragon now, I get it, but why humans? Dragons seem to just like to eat them out of spite, as they would be such a bad meal for a creature that size. Not only that, but the humans are way too okay with it. I know they bring it up, and they don't like it, but they are still way too okay with it. (That and the girls just think dragons are hot)
All in all, it is a good book. I listened to the audio, however, looking ahead it appears that the whole series is not set out that way. Mayber it will hook me enough in the next two to get me to read it under my own steam, who knows. (Hopefully, more audio books.)
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This reads like half a book. Like, not even a cliffhanger for the sequel, it literally feels like it ends right in the middle of the story arc. There’s 0 character development too.
Additionally, the way the two victims Lewis kills and eats are explicitly called out as female feels…a little sus. (I know one is a cow, but every time the cow is brought up the characters are /sure/ to call her she.)
Also the amount of typos that persisted throughout the text were distracting, particularly “misses” when it clearly should have been Mrs. or Miss. A good pro editor could have caught all that.
