It took me forever to get through this book. Much of it was really lost on me, mostly because there was a string of characters that are probably very important to the development of psychoanalysis, but with whom I wasn't/am not familiar. I also just don't know much about psychoanalytic theory.

Extensively researched and well written, the book is an excellent biography that reflects well on Anna Freud without stumbling into the arena of hagiography. As a note to those interested, it is a worthwhile read, but fair warning that its discussion of psychoanalysis is intense and not of a layman's understand; the book depends on a moderate to advanced level of understanding of Freudian theory and at least some familiarity with his contenders.
