"Her world, her mission...is about to change. What do you choose when your blood is on the line." A world where your life is a mission and to succeed you must have resolute devotion to duty. All Anna has ever wanted is to be the best Warrior and sister she can be. Easier said than done. Seventeen-year-old Anna Hasdiel is a noviate at Hope Academy, a secret school for young angels where she and her sister, Amalie, train to become Warrior Legites with the duty of protecting humans from Demons for the Legion United. Anna's devoted to the angelic cause. She's always known she would be a Warrior for the Legion. Her world is about to change. For months, noviates have been disappearing from Angel Academies around the world. No one knows why. They just hope they won't be next. The Powers that govern the lower choir angels have sent reinforcements as protection and Anna feels an inescapable pull to Legite Nathaniel Deror. Legite Deror is strong, fierce and mysterious. He seems to have it in for Anna one second and the next he's rescuing her. He makes her feel things she shouldn't. When Amalie's boyfriend disappears, Amalie decides to search for him. This decision takes the group to the Dark World, the home of the fallen Archangel Lucifer, where they will encounter insurmountable trials and fight past a host of deadly enemies. Where do loyalties lay? She never planned for this. She never planned for him.
Devoted by Emery Skye is utterly different than other angel based novels out for reading today. There were so many elements that were unexpected and unique compared to other novels, making Devoted a book in its own realm. Anna Hasdiel, the main character at the angel academy, is a strong willed female lead, a personal weakness, who struggles an inner battle between duty and family. Eventually, family wins over, and there is nothing Anna wouldn’t do for her younger sister, even if it means going through literal hell. I truly loved the plot of Devoted, it kept me on my toes through the entire novel and I never knew what to expect around the next corner. I was given an electronic copy for an honest review, and I noticed throughout that there were many grammatical and punctuation errors, all very small ranging from the omission of a word to the lack of an apostrophe. I read books very critically with an editor’s eye, so I pick up on the smaller details that are otherwise overlooked. I would wish for it to have had another read through, however, small punctuation errors do not inhibit the wonderful world and story Skye has spun. As I mentioned, I love a strong female lead and Anna encompasses everything this type of character should embody, making her not only intriguing but a role model for the audience and characters within the novel. Anna is not the only character the audience will fall in love with, every character she takes the time to describe and characterize becomes interesting and with that, you fall in love with all of them—until she rips all you know out from under you with the ending. I must say, the ending of Devoted was heart wrenching and I hated it only because I am in a state of distress wondering what is going to happen next. Not only was the ending a cliff hanger, but right before it ended, the audience is thrown for a loop. I don’t actually hate the ending, I personally think it was quite genius, Skye left the audience and myself, in a painful anticipation for the next in the Angel Academy series.
WHAT? I need the next one! I seriously do. How can a book end like this?
When this book started, I had a strong feeling I would like it. I have a weak spot for books like this. And for brave and sarcastic main characters. Anna is both. She is fiercely protective of her sister, Amalie, who is really naive. At first, I would get really mad at her. How ungrateful can a sister be? Anna would do everything for her. Risk the world for her. But as long as the book goes, you realize how protective and loving Amalie can be, in her own way. And they go through a lot of things in this book (can't say much, but you'll see). Taylor is also an surprisingly endearing character, because of how funny she was and her important role in this book.
Without many spoilers, let's go to Nathan. He is the handsome, fierce and bad ass angel that came to their school (Hope, Alaska) to increase the security of the school. And Anna is really intrigued, as is he. They are not the clichéd type of couple, though. It's not love at first sight, more like attraction at first sight. And since Anna isn't blind and says other guys are handsome/cute too, you can't really judge her. But they start being friends, and he helps her and is perfect. AND THE HOCKEY SCENE. Sorry, but it was adorable. Nathan is really adorable (sigh). He's bad ass, but cute. He took Demitri's (from Vampire Academy) place in my heart.
It seems all butterflies, but A LOT happens in this book. I just finished it 5 minutes ago, so thinking about it now, there are MANY twists. Towards the end, you're like ''What?''. And ''wow'' (But I still had my theories, and a lot of them were right). At the beginning, there is a really good rhythm so you can get to know the characters and the story. There is kind of a creepy vibe about the school, you'll see. Man, how I missed a good angel book. I'm super excited about this series and I hope that the next one comes soon. I NEED IT. When I realized the book was ending I got really sad. And this is such a good feeling, because there's been a while since I've read a good book in this genre. I truly adored it and am looking forward to the next one!

I am so glad that author Emery Skye contacted me and asked if I would like to read and review her book! It was amazing! I loved it from start to finish and even after it was finished I thought about the characters, the situations and what would happen next! This book really stuck with me! It reminded me of the Vampire Academy books, mixed with some Twilight (no vampires though) and just a bit of romance all wrapped up into one very addicting book. The author was able to grab my attention and keep it right from the start and the plot took more twists and turns than a roller coaster. Each one was just a bit more unpredictable than the last. The story keeps you on the edge of your seat and the characters grab your attention and won't let go! I felt like each time I had a grasp on my emotions, the author would throw something else in and it left me speechless, breathless, emotional and eager to find out more! I loved this book and I can't wait for the next one to come out! I have to know what happens to Anna, Nate, Am and all of their friends....or so called friends, such as Lucas...Once you get started on this book you won't want to stop until you have finished! It is just that amazing! Get comfy and add this to your TBR list, you don't want to miss this amazing read! Enjoy!
I received this book from the author Emery Skye. Devoted is the first book in the Angel Academy series. This is Emery Skye’s debut novel. This story is about Anna who is in one of the seven Angel Academy. Anna is getting ready for the next step, to be a junior and move on to more power, responsibility and training but this is happening while something is happening. Novices are disappearing and no one knows why. Finally a higher ranking angel, Legite Nathaniel Deror to protect the novices, and Anna’s life gets even more complicated. She is not sure if Legite Nathaniel Deror likes her or hates her as it changes all the time. But together maybe they can figure out what is going on.
This book was great. The background is set up really nice, without confusing the reader. The characters are very interesting and pull the reader into the story. The flow is great and really kept me reading. I can’t wait to read the next one to see what happens next.

I enjoyed this fantasy book about Angels in training. they are called noviates then when they graduate they can be Legite. It kept my interest well.
I did feel that at times there was alot of useless "filler"info that we could do without. One part stands out is a part where Ann is looking in her closet and kindof goes on about the different clothes, and what kind of material, and picking lint off, just a full few paragraphs on selecting clothes. Just saying getting dressed would been enough. Just too much detail info on something that doesn't matter.
Ann is at this Angel Academy, along with her sister Amalie. There is a mystery going on with the noviates going missing. Its pretty interesting and suspenseful and like the characters and the twists that we get.
I really like Nathaniel Deror, who is a Legite and is brought to the academy to help protect them, and also help with training the noviates. He seems to have an interest in Ann, its runs hot and cold though,
I will say I actually didn't care for Ann's sister, Amalie, or her boyfriend Alyosha. At least in the first part of the book. I really disliked Taylor she is useless.
I was a bit surprised that they all put themselves in danger to search for Alyosha when he goes missing, and really didn't understand why Ann's enemy, Taylor ends up going on the trip with them, she has nothing really to offer, and is a sissy, diva kind of girl, who will slow them down. I really didn't like Taylor and wish she could be deleted from the story. She's a classic "Mean Girl" and she isn't needed in my opinion. (it's like high school girls who fight over stupid stuff),
I do not want to spoil the good stuff, and there is plenty of good stuff, once you get past some of the less desirable things. So will wrap up this review.
I gave this 4 stars, as I did like it, but not loved it. There were some errors and stuff, not too much, but there were some. But I read a review copy that wasn't a finished copy, so I did not factor that into my rating.
I do recommend this to any0ne who enjoys fantasy books with angels, with some twist and turns, and suspense.
The Cover: It's done well, but to me didn't fit the book. In no way does it let us know this is about angels or that it is even paranormal at all.
I was provided a copy of this book for my honest review.
Anna Hasdiel attends Hope Academy, a secret school for angels in training. They train to be warriors to protect the human race from demons. To be a warrior you must be the best, and this is Anna's goal. To be the best warrior, the best sister, what could go wrong. When young noviates begin disappearing The powers that be send in reinforcements to keep the others safe. Legite Nathaniel Deror is sent to protect noviates and he cant seem to make up his mind to either protect Anna or stay far from her. When Anna's sister Amalie's boyfriend disappears they set off to find him.
Devoted started a bit slow but most stories do. They need to get the reader caught up on the history of the characters and the story. Once I got past the history BAM! Emery Skye smacked me upside the head and got my attention. Anna is a seven-teen year old noviate determined to be the best and become a warrior. She does not want any other distractions, especially Nathaniel. Anna is strong, fierce, and a determined character...which I love~! Emery Skye did an amazing job for her debut novel and I hope to see more amazing things from her and this series. This novel does have a cliff hanger just to forewarn y'all. Who doesn't love one of those though! especially when it contains mystery, intrigue, angels, and Lucifer....come on!

I received a kindle edition of Devoted from the Author in exchange for an honest review. This book, as with the first in any series, has a lot of characters and a very unique setting to expose which the author has managed with finesse and the ability to keep the reader actively involved. The teenage characters are true to the behaviors expected when faced with peer pressure, friendship, and love. The twists of dealing with a culture of angels in training and political and demonic intrigue along with the characters facing the responsibilities of duty versus family keep this story moving very quickly. The descriptions of surroundings and events are vivid and add to each scene as the characters grow and change with each experience. I look forward to the next book in the series. There are a larger than usual number of typographical errors for a digital copy.
I have always loved angel fiction and this novel does not disappoint by far. Young angels train at Hope Academy to one day protect humans from demons, only some of the noviates are disappearing. As Anna sets out with her sister to rescue a fellow angel, and her sister’s boyfriend, they are joined by Legite Deror. The group then journeys to the Dark World to rescue the missing noviates. Between the pull Anna feels for Deror and an interesting power that pops up during the trip, I couldn't put the book down for a second! I’m looking forward to reading more of Angel Academy novels as Skye writes them.
4.5 stars!!!' I absolutely adore this book. Excellently written, the author makes it incredibly easy to envision everything in your mind. The main character, Anna is my ideal female lead. Smart, strong, and ambitious, but also sarcastic and willing to break every rule for har sister. Anna is an angel noviate, she doesn't break rules. That all changes when Annas younger sister Amalie needs her. Amalie begins to change after she starts dating Aloysha. She starts getting in more trouble than usual. Anna comes to the rescue and pays for it by beginning extra training with super-hot warrior Nathaniel Deror. Unsuprisingly, Anna and Nathan develop feelings for each other. I also enjoyed the character of Taylor. Taylor is your typical popular mean girl but she begins to change... while never losing the mega-b*tch attitude. Someone goes missing so the whole crew takes a fun-filled trip to Hell a.k.a. The Dark World. The secrets revealed at the end... Well one of anyway, i never saw coming. It's very rare that I get the immense pleasure of such a truly surprising twist. I can not wait for the next book in this series!
*** The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because it had quite a few errors. Spacing, periods missing, and incorrect spellings were the main issues. If it had another round of editing, it would without a doubt be a 5 star book.
I quite liked this book. The story was a little different than the average vampire/werewolf girl meets guy story, even the setting of Alaska is unusual.
The story revolves around angels and how they deal with teen angst versus their duty to serve God (the powers) and protect humans. There is a bit of a romance/possible love interlude but its not the main focus of the book and it flows into the story well. A huge portion of the book is about devotion to family and what you do for those pesky younger siblings who always seem to get into trouble and drag you off the right path.
I liked that there was a lot of foreshadowing, in the dreams and some of the character interactions so you could see where they were going but it was still a fun journey. The end of the book isn't exactly a cliff hanger, the first part is wrapped up, but it definitely shows that there is much more action to come. I cannot wait to read what happens next.
The one thing that bothered me a lot and I am sure others will comment on is the amount of errors in the book. At one point a main characters name is spelled wrong. These can be overcome, but especially at the beginning they seem excessive. Admittedly I received a free preview copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. So it is possible (I hope) that these are fixed.
I got a copy (ebook) in exchange for a honest review. I thought this book was awesome! It reminded me of Vampire Academy A LOT, but I liked it. This book would've gotten a 5-star review IF I wasn't distracted by the spelling errors... -"My checks burned." Uh, Cheeks? -Page 342 of the ebook "fill giddy." Feel??? -Page 348 "it was ridicules!" Ridiculous!? -Page 379 "pales as..." (no -s please) Back to Vampire Academy, the relationship was Rose/Dimitri. Me gusta! I thought Anna was kinda like me at the beginning of the book, a real bitch. But, it's actually her sister that pissed me off. What else? Oh yeah, No me gusta Lucas y el Patron At first I didn't like Taylor, but she grew on me. I had a feeling that you-know-who might be you know... In the end, I really liked this book. Pick it up if you can! Also, thank you for the copy Emery Skye! I loved reading this book!
I received a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book intrigued me originally with a different take on angels and demons and it did not disappoint. Anna's witty comebacks kept the story light and amusing, where it could have had a radically different tone. The story touches on some dark subjects such as underage sex and kidnapping, but doesn't talk too much about them. In supernatural fiction, the story is usually from the human's perspective with angels and other creatures being secondary characters. Anna and the other main characters are angels themselves, showing the angels' society from the angels' point of view, which was intriguing and refreshing. I think the author did a good job of showing the horror that is supposed to be commonplace in hell and a good job of showing the way it can affect people after seeing some of that horror. Overall, I thought this book was fairly good and I am looking forward to see where these characters go in the sequel and how Ms. Skye's writing evolves.
Anna Hasdiel is a seventeen year noviate (angel in training) who attends Hope Academy, along with her sister Amalie to train as a Warrior like their mother. Anna is an elite fighter, with amazing skills Nathaniel Deror, a Legite, one of the stronger angels is brought to the academy along with Lucas, to help police the school, after noviates begin to go missing. In this process he is employed to run one of the training camps. Nathaniel shows extra interest in Anna, and an attraction blooms between the two. When Amalie’s boyfriend Alyosha, a noviate comes up missing, they all set out to look for him in the dark world and Anna soon finds herself face to face with Lucifer himself. You will have to read to see what happens next.
Devoted (An Angel Academy novel) was a little hard to get into at the start, but once I was able to get through the first few chapters, it grabbed me. The writing was amazing and it was a very cute story. I am definitely looking forward to the next book.
I recieved the Book in exchange for an honest review soo here it is. For me the book took a short while to really catch my full interest due to the explanation of the back story. I also found similarities to my favorite series Vampire academy, which at first had me very skepticle about the book and how it would come along. The idea of it being an Angel academy and missing noviates drawa to my attention to the suspense and mystery of the plot. The realtionship between Ann and Amalie is at times relatable and other frustrating due to the fact that Ann felt this demanding need to take the blame for any mishap her sister got herself into. The intense connectin between Legite Nathaniel Deror and Ann keeps the novel exciting, and crushworthy. Anyway throughout the novel A few things to that I deeply comapared to Vampire academy but otherwise the book really good and I recommend this to those who likes forbidden love stories and mysteries.
3.8 Stars This is an interesting read. A different take than other angel books out there and great for teen readers and young adults. I liked the story and would give it alone four stars. It is a YA novel about angels called noviates. The book is centered on a novaite named Anna. She's the best in her class and should be focused on advancing instead of the mischief her sister Amalie keeps getting into or the new cute warrior/teacher on campus. Mischief that leads her on an adventure that nearly cost her everything and leaves her future unknown. The only thing I didn't like about the book was the errors. It did bring down my rating some. There's not a huge amount but it does need another round of editing. The main errors were periods and spacing. It's still readable and a good start to this series. I am interested to see what happens as the story continues to unfold.
This book is pretty great. With a good editor and publisher, it could make it to the top 100 list on Amazon Fiction for Young Adults. It reminds me of the Vampire Academy and House of Night series', but with angels. It has a great storyline, seems to be researched well enough, and is a fun read. I picked it up and couldn't stop reading it until 4am- and once I woke up again, I finished it. I look forward to reading more of Emery's work! While it's classic that the main character is the most fantastical (noun) in the universe, at least she threw in some good twists, both predictable and not! While it is disappointing that they have so many human emotions and the bad guys in the book are (ahem, demons of sorts and possibly hot)- the demons in the equivalent of hell that don't look like humans or angels are obviously not hot.
I received this book from the author for free in exchange for an honest review.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though certain areas became a little confusing and I did find myself getting slightly lost in the storyline due to the writing style and the way the details were described (which is why I gave it four stars instead of the full five), but this was all-in-all a very interesting, exciting, and unique read. The character were decently strong, there was enough mystery and suspense to keep it a somewhat-good page turner, and the plot was VERY unique compared to a lot of other books I've read, which proved to me the author is very talented and very creative. This book is definitely worth giving a try!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
I thought this book was ok. I get that at the beginning of a book the author needs to describe the world, but some of the description appeared right in the middle of a thought and became confusing. I thought the main character Anna was very naïve at times and her emotions and thoughts changed within seconds which made me quite annoyed with her. The plot of the story was very interesting, however, the ending did not grip me enough to want to continue on with the story. 3/5 stars
Mrs. Emery Skye ask myself to review her book called Devoted (an angel academy novel) and I love the book!!!Devoted have so many twist and turn it had me on the edge of my seat!!! I love how Devoted was a love story and you will do anything for your family!!!I can't wait for the next one in the series
I enjoyed this immensely. The story was interesting and after i finished reading chapters i couldn't wait to find out more. The writing was descriptive and imaginative. I am looking forward to the next book which i assume there will be.
The wording seemed like maybe the book was translated. The story itself was every riveting. I found myself reading to the very end even though it's way pass my bed time.
Anna wants nothing more than to be a warrior. But her sister Amalie keeps getting in trouble and trying to be the protective older sister Anna is, her sister's trouble turns into her own. The school keeps giving them punishments that just don't seem to stick. But for some reason, they haven't been expelled. Although their newest venture might do just that.
Let's start off by saying that Anna is a really angry person. She's pretty rude to everyone she runs into, including the school gossip Taylor. While Taylor can get on your nerves, I don't feel she deserves the level of hostility that Anna gives. Anna also holds a lot of secrets that probably need to be shared considering the gravity of them. Her younger sister Amelie is a wreck. She has no respect for her sister because she is always getting into major trouble, for a guy no less. I just think that if my future at the school was on the line, and it was putting my sister in trouble, I would chill out, or find a better way to hide all the illegal activities I'm doing.
The heart of the story, Angels protecting humans, at a school to determine their life goals is a really neat premise. The Dark World is an imaginative place and it will be interesting to see how that develops in future books. But I have mixed feelings about Devoted, because I really love the storyline and what can be done with it, and I think with some editing, it can be a really great book. There are a few plots that don't get resolved, and I don't know if those will be addressed in later books or not. I know often times an Indie Author's first book will need revisions after they develop their craft, and that's why I'm looking forward to book 2. I'm excited to see what's in store for Anna.
I read this book a few years ago, but never wrote a review, so I reread it, which I'm glad I did. For me, it was a solid read and a page turner. I found it to be full of adventures, some action and good character interaction.
The characters and world building was very well done, in that, you were given just the right amount of descriptions that you could see it in your minds eye. I was impressed with the story and plot lines, as well as, keeping the cussing to a minimum and alluding to one sexual situatuon.
I like Anna's persona, even though sometimes I wanted to tell her to chill, and how she will always be there for her sister Amalie (even though she's turning out to be the one to get herself into some precarious situatuations). Nathan is Anna's trainer/mentor, where her inner monologue is crushing on him. He comes across as a good tainer/mentor, but you can tell that the lines are getting a little blurred. Taylor is the school b**chband Anna and Amalie's content nemsis, although the banter between the three has some good sayings.
This all takes place at an Angel Academy in Alaska. The Adventure begins when Amalie's boyfriend disappears. Anna, Amalie, Taylor, Nathan and Lucas (another Legite warrior) head off to the Dark World to find him. There is definitely a twist and a surprise towards the end, one of which you may guess.
Overall, a really good book if you're looking for a different kind of Angel read. I'll be looking forward to reading the next book. For a debit biok, it really is outstanding.
I was given a free copy of Devoted by the author (Emery Skye) in exchange for an honest review.
I don't even know where to begin with this one. I guess I'll start off with the most annoying aspect: the grammar and punctuation errors. It's one thing to misspell breathe vs breath (multiple times) but when you forget to end/start quotation marks when a character is speaking, that's where I draw the line. Also, "accept" and "except" are two completely different words. Seriously. Adding commas where they are not needed, ending sentences too early or letting them run on for too long, and the over use of descriptions just made the writing itself annoying to read. The readers do not need to know that a character has "long, wavy, thick dark hair." Personally, I think just saying "long dark hair" is enough information. And I can't ever see having a conversation with someone along the lines of "Hey, let's go to Chili's tonight. I really wanna go to Chili's. We're still going to Chili's right? Cause you said we would go to Chili's." The writing mistakes add up and makes reading the novel aggravating. This book was published through a publishing agency, so I don't know how there can be so many mistakes. And we haven't even gotten to the characters or plot line.
The Story: The main premise of Devoted is there are Angels and Demons on Earth, and the Angels train to fight the Demons and protect the humans from them. I haven't read an angel/demon book in awhile, but Devoted is very similar to Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead and The Covenant Series by Jennifer L Armentrout. Plus, there are so many cliches in it that I feel like I've already read it before. I can't stand every single character in the novel being absolutely gorgeous, including the heroin (who of course doesn't know it). This seems to be most of Young-Adult books lately - "if people aren't pretty, they're boring." Which is so stupid and a topic for another time before I get completely off track. Devoted has The Special Snowflake Syndrome (I came up with this name thanks to my sister), which is basically the main character is super special/awesome/amazing for no reason. Yes, we want to read about a protagonist that stands out; some series have The Special Snowflake Syndrome and they make it work, resulting in an amazing series. But then there's books like this one, where SSS turns into a nuisance that you just can't seem to get rid of. You've got the protagonist being awesome, the side-kick, the mean girl, and the hot guy who is supposed to end up with the protagonist. Oh, and the hot-guy is older than the protagonist, which doesn't really matter to me, but when the age part ends up being brought up a lot (which it always is), all I can think of is "pedophile". Yeah, I don't wanna read about that. Also, it took awhile to get to the main plot described in the synopsis, which makes the first half of the book drag on. And when you feel like you've already read it before, feeling slowed down does not help. The all-powerful angels act like children and they are pretty dull - I would rather face off Lucifer by myself than have them "help" me. Only thing that I agree with is the emphasis on following rules. Angels are made to obey God, so heeding "the Law" is very important, but these angels just seem to do whatever they want and make up the rules as they go. Especially when it comes to our main character, in which the rules are changed specifically for her, cause she's just so special.
The Characters: Anna Hasdiel is our protagonist in this novel, and she is one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever had the displeasure to read about. She's all about training 24/7 so she can destroy demons and she looks down on all the other students for trying to also have a life. She places herself on a pedestal high above others, and don't forget that she's also valedictorian of her class - although she definitely doesn't act like it. The description of the other students does make them seem like incompetent imbeciles, but Anna looks down on anyone who wants to do something other than train (like her sister with liking to draw). Enter Legite Nathan Deror. Anna immediately starts crushing on him and wanting to be with him - but wait, isn't that exactly why she looks down on the other students? For wanting to have relationships? To live a little? But it's okay for Anna to want to be with Legite Nathan Deror, cause she's a special snowflake - and then she still continues to look down on her peers, EVEN AFTER SHE STARTS ACTING EXACTLY LIKE THEM. So, hypocrite. Anna also lacks even a little bit of control and has serious anger management issues. It seems to be hinted at that some supernatural force may be making her act this way, but I think it's just her true personality showing. Then there's Anna's sister, Amalie, who seems to act as dumb as a post at times and is extremely annoying. I cannot take any of these characters seriously at all, especially the ones that are supposed to be leaders.
In Conclusion: I feel like I've been pretty harsh with this review, but it is constructive criticism. My honest opinion of Devoted is that it is a poorly written novel that needs serious editing, and that the characters and plot line aren't that great. If you're a fan of Vampire Academy, The Covenant Series or just a big YA Fantasy fan who doesn't mind grammar errors and misspellings, then you might like Devoted. I just can't stand all these errors plus the annoying characters, so this book isn't the one for me. I read about one-third of it, skimmed a bit, then decided that I'm not going to waste my time anymore - I have better books to read that I'm really excited for. Sorry if I seem harsh, but I'm not going to hold back on my reviews. This just isn't the book for me.
I was contacted by author Emery Skye to read and review her newest book, Devoted: An Angel Academy Novel. It is the first novel about Anna, a "noviate," or Angel-In-Training, and the product of a Warrior Angel (her mother) and an unknown (assumed) Warrior Angel. She is at the top of her class, newly named Captain of the equestrian team, and cannot wait to go to Bethel when she turns 17 to declare her intention to become a Warrior Angel herself. She is the self-proclaimed protector of her 15 year old sister, Amelie, who is innocent and certainly NOT Warrior material.
It is the beginning of a new year for the noviates at the Angel Academy in Hope, Alaska. The noviates at this academy are of one choir of angels composed of the Warriors and Harbingers, who teach. Their days are divided between theoretical and informational classes about each dimension and practical application, or war training, classes. The one and only purpose for Angels is the protection of humankind from demons. Nothing else matters. They should continuously be focussed only on the Law, and what The Powers provide the Angels to do as it pertains to their jobs.
Anna prefers her PT classes--after all, being a Warrior is what she has been groomed for from the beginning. She does not question; she does not break the Law. She does nothing that would get her wings clipped, thus causing her to live life like a human. There is something strange going on in the world of Angels, however, that is causing some concern. Noviates are disappearing from the Angel Academies around the world. It is not something that other noviates know much about--it is more rumor or speculation, but not of major concern to Anna until Legion Angels, elite Warriors, come to the Academy to teach and for extra protection. And until it happens to someone she knows.
That noviate is Alyosha Derer, Amelie's boyfriend and the brother of Anna's fighting teacher, Legite Nathaniel Derer. While she doesn't like Alyosha--after all, Amelie should be concentrating on her studies and not frivolous things like love and art--she herself is fighting a losing battle with her own attraction to Legite Derer. After several "mishaps" that continuously throw Anna and Nathan together before Alyosha's kidnapping, they form a bond that makes Anna rethink her position on what is most important in her own life--following the Law or obeying her emotions that she has worked so hard to suppress.
Eventually, Anna, Amelie, Nathan, and the class bully, Taylor, venture into territory that will probably get their wings clipped if their actions don't kill them first. They leave the Academy without permission to look for Alyosha, go into the Dark World, and fight demons on their own territory. Although Devoted ends upon their return, the reader assumes that their intervention in the Dark World will be the catalyst that starts a new, bloody war between Heaven and Hell.
The premise of the story is really good. I quite enjoyed the author's writing style; the visuals that she provides are exceptional. I did not want to put the story down from the beginning. Anna is a sympathetic character and her love for her sister stands out as a major theme through the entire book. In this, she never wavers.
I did have a few problems with spelling and punctuation. The book is in dire need of a copy editor to check for consistency as well. Names are spelled one way upon introduction and then spelled another way a page later. Some words are used incorrectly, but the point still comes across well. It reads like a first draft.
A major concern is the inconsistency between Anna's feelings on her future and the way she acts. She questions nothing out loud--even the intentions of other Angels who she knows are not trustworthy--yet she still does what she is told by them. Although she is at the top of her class, she knows less about the world she's supposed to be learning about than her nemesis-turned-annoying ally.
This is an incredibly interesting and engaging story that needs a little work to make it perfect. I do recommend reading it if you are interested in supernatural and fantasy. It is definitely a YA novel--the Angels are teenagers who act like teenagers.

Devoted (Angel Academy #1) by Emery Skye tells the story of Anna who is about to turn seventeen and attends Hope Academy, a school for angels. The angels (noviates) attend and train to become Warriors so they can protect the human race from demons. Anna attends school with her sister Amalie who is not as serious about her training as Anna is and because of this, Anna is very protective of Amalie. Anna is strong minded, disciplined, and fierce. She wants to be the best Warrior she can possibly be.
Some of the noviates have been disappearing from the different Angel Academies and the Powers that govern the angels have sent assistance in the form of the delicious, Legite Warrior Angel,Nathaniel Deror(the embodiment of perfection) and other Warrior angels.
Legite Nathaniel Deror is an enigmatic, powerful, and intense individual that Anna feels a great pull towards. Legite Deror replaces Dr. Chayyliel and teaches the Combat Techniques class and singles out Anna. Anna gets her ass handed to her each class until one day she pushes back and steps over the line.
Anna and Amalie go to a party at school and after being at the party for a while, Anna can’t find Amalie. Anna starts to panic and she looks for her all over campus. Legite Deror helps look for Amalie, and they find her and Alyosha (her boyfriend )in a compromising position.
Amalie, Alyosha, and Anna are punished. Anna ends up having to do extra training with Legite Deror. During these training sessions, Nate runs hot and cold with Anna which drives her nutty. Anna has strong feelings for Legite Deror which is uncharted territory for her.
Alyosha (also Legite Deror’s brother) ends up going missing like the other noviates. Anna, Amalie, Taylor, Legite Deror, and Lucas (another Warrior Angel) go to the Dark World to rescue the noviates that have been taken.
When they are meeting the Soothsayer for the first time, Anna finds she has a very rare power that she did not realize she had, and Nate is troubled by this new revelation. Nate decides he wants to do some research in the library before they go into the Dark World.
Amalie, Taylor and Lucas enter the Dark World through the book, but before Anna and Nate jump into the book they look into each other’s eyes; they see the longing the other has for the other and finally give each other a well-deserved kiss. (The type that will knock your socks off.)
After they are all in the Dark World, all hell breaks loose both literally and figuratively. Unthinkable choices, betrayal, and secrets are revealed. Anna’s world is turned upside down.
The beginning of the story serves as an introduction to the Angel Hierarchy and the characters themselves. You learn about the main characters and their personalities. As a result of the information dump, the beginning of the book is a little bogged down but still very interesting. After you get past the initial getting to know you stage, the story takes off.
Emery Skye has created a book that grabs the reader. Skye’s book is gripping and commanding. The characters are well thought out and interesting. The story line moves along at a steady pace, with plenty of great moments, and never lags. This book has many twists and turns to keep you intrigued.
The author has given fantastic mental images that bring the story to life for its readers.
The only negative aspect of this book is that at times during the story there where things that needed to be edited so that unnecessary material which slowed down the story could be cut out. Other than that this book was highly entertaining, and a joy to read.
If you enjoy action, romance, and/or angels, I highly recommend you read Devoted (Angel Academy #1) by Emery Skye I can’t wait for the next book in the series! It will be interesting to see how Nate and Anna’s relationship grows and also to see if we learn anything else about her mom and dad. However, I think I am looking forward to learning more about Imogene since she is an angel that is like Anna.

Devoted is about Anna an angel training to become a warrior in the Hope Academy a school for angels. Apart from her angel training Anna is always protecting her little sister Amalie which is why she gets into a lot of trouble. Around the world where other Angel Academies are situated at there have been angel disappearances and the powers that govern send in reinforcements as protection to the Hope Academy. One of the reinforcements is Legite Nathaniel Deror whom Anna feels a strong attraction towards but she has other things to worry about. When Amalie's boyfriend disappears and she decides to go look for him Anna has no other choice than to go with her to the Dark World, the home of the fallen angel Lucifer with other's tagging along this is where the story truly begins...
In the beginning while I was reading this book I kept putting it down and doing other things instead of reading it. Which is why I smacked myself twice after finishing this book yesterday because I've been missing out on an amazing read. At the start of the book its a bit slow because it's mostly describing the Academy and the Angel's ranks and other stuff I sort of don't remember. (I have a slow attention span. Sue me.) It's not until like 30% into the book that it picks up and when it does I'm reading this book like it has all the secrets in the universe.
Anna by far I think is my favorite character from this whole book. Anna is a bad ass no-nonsense girl she knows what she has to do and will stop at nothing to protect her little sister. I'm not gonna lie I would sometimes get irritated by Amalie and Anna having to protect her from problems she caused but as the story went on I understood why Anna did it. (After all I have a sister too.) Anna's character was awesome I had no problems with her, I even dare say I'm putting her on my favorite kick-ass heroines list.
Now on to Amalie, Anna's sister the one who sort of irritated me but then I came to love. Amalie is naive and is always being protected by Anna, and although I was annoyed it wasn't for long because Amalie loves and protects Anna just as much. They protect each other which I find so sweet, their sisterly love for each other pulls at my heartstrings.
Nathaniel's character was fierce and strong and handsome and I just wanted to throttle him. No I'm not complaining I liked him and I felt like he was a good match for Anna. He did truly have feelings for her even though he kept pushing her away. Nathaniel took a place in my heart and I truly felt the love he and Anna had and I was happy but then....at the end of the story he totally destroyed that place in my heart. I know why he did it and I understand but I just ugghh I need the second book. Anna's probably going to forgive him but I don't know about me and what's up with the sort of cliff hanger.
Their journey to the Dark world was difficult and the things they saw and went through were horrendous but man can Anna kick those demons butts. The Dark World is a scary place one I would rather not visit again in the next book but then again who knows.
Overall I truly did enjoy this book and definitely recommend it to anyone who loves angel books or likes to read Paranormal books with a strong heroine who can kick ass.
Brilliant idea so very poorly executed. It was a shame, could have been a great read, but as it was, it was so hard even to translate through the spelling and grammatical errors. In the authors own spelling, it was "ridicules." (She used that spelling twice, so at least she was consistent.) This book was clearly not edited. So much so, that I could not even understand some of the sentences. Whole words left out. Random punctuation and no periods at the end of a sentence. Action tags on the wrong speaker. I had no idea who was saying what.
But I have to give the author credit. Writing is hard. It takes balls. Her angel world is fascinating. But I mean, I can't respect an author if she can't proofread her work or at least have a friend proofread it. They say, don't waste a reader’s time . . .
So here is my opinion. I don't rehash the plot like other reviewers. And I do feel bad because I didn't want to pour the "hate on." I know how hard writing is, but as a reader, please respect my time and polish your manuscript.
The angel academy idea was wonderful. The tension with the main squeeze, delightful. Even the adventure in the Dark World had its merits. It could be a great movie. But you would have to tone down the teenage angst. The reader spends the entire novel in a moody 17 year old's head. She has a potty mouth. At one point the protagonist says something about not usually swearing out loud. I had to laugh, out loud.
Boring angel Academy classes. Check. Endless descriptions of every boy in the class that gets under your skin, in a good and bad way. Check. Obnoxious, prissy girls. Check. Anna has a typical angel academy life. Complete with witty sarcasm and volatile moods. And if you can move past that the emotional whiplash of this character, you might like this book. But one thing is right. She is devoted to her duty as an angel and has high aspirations.
30% of the way through I would have rated it one star. This book does not jump into any action. There is no tension. One fifth of the way through the book I still did not know the protagonist's goal, motivation, and conflict. There is no conflict. Too many pass-the-time-of-day scenes. Skip the whole first chapter, unless you want to read about Anna taking a shower and picking out her outfits. At lot of character introduction could have been done once the story got underway and there was some conflict. The author lays down all the world building right away. So much that I tried not to let my eyes glaze over.
The next 20% I would rate 2 stars. The action started to pick up and the writing smoothed out somewhat.
50-70% got into the story a bit, mostly because of Nathan and Anna's romantic interest.
70% to the end, I would rate 3 stars. Not enough to change the overall rating. The way they escaped at the end was just too coincidental. I mean they were in hell with Lucifer, you just don't walk away from that.
I will admit, I am curious as to what will happen in the next book. But not enough to suffer through the poor delivery. I'll just read the reviews.
I would not recommend this to anyone, unless you are a teenager that is oblivious to bad grammar, and already have a foul tongue.
