Shelves: 2014-reads
An entertaining and highly readable novel about the education system in BC and the perils of raising our children on a diet of internet and social media. I fell in love with the main character, Harry, pretty much from the opening. He is endearing and Thomas had me rooting for him throughout the story. There are many funny moments, as well as painful ones for readers who are also writers and know what it feels like to receive a harsh critique from an editor. I found the dialogue to be very well d ...more

The Naked Storyteller was the first novel I read on my Kindle. Baring in mind that I’ve had it since, ooh, 2011, it needed quite a book to get me reading. Thank God this came along. In a very cliché manner, right from page 1 I was hooked.

The protagonist, grumpy, overweight, life-hating Harry Tyke, ‘lovingly’ nicknamed ‘Beast’ by his students, isn’t perhaps the most obvious candidate for this role. In fact, he’s the least obvious. But Harry has one thing that means he is suited: his character wan

Harry Tyke, a “flabby, divorced grade-six teacher on the verge of a monumental mid-life crisis”, and Olga, the “creative, free-thinking teacher-turned-storyteller”, star in this amazing romantic comedy centred in Vancouver, Canada. As someone who was raised near this amazing city, I was excited to read this novel even before I bought it,and my previous knowledge of Laura Thomas' work had be even more anxious to get my hands on a copy. Her last book, Polly Wants To Be a Writer, was aimed at inspi ...more

With the strike continuing on in BC, this book perfectly encapsulates the impact it has on students, parents, and even one wacky teacher. While Harry Tyke is anything but your typical grade school teacher, he is surprisingly funny, down-to-earth, and relatable in a way you wouldn't want to admit to.

I think this is a great, light read for both kids and their parents, and teachers too. It manages to hit on some important issues - finding your own way in life, dealing with relationships, education

If I’m honest, if I’d first seen this book on the shelf at my local library, I may not have given it a second glance. But after hearing so much about the book, I’m glad I took the opportunity given to me to review it. This is a brilliant novel, one that I will definitely read again.

Thomas has a gift for creating relatable characters and the protagonist of The Naked Storyteller, Harry Tyke, is no exception. At 52, he’s 31 years my senior but many of his thoughts and frustrations are ones that I’v

I received the book from the touring host for an honest review.

The cover and the title of the book is misleading and once you start to read the story you realize that this is not the normal love story or erotic story...since the name can apply that.
The story is in direct contrast with all of the above with a unique look at Harry Tyke's life; a middle age teacher with a lot of anger towards his mother and his choices in life that affected him for thirty years.

The Naked Storyteller made me laugh a lot and think even more. Laura Thomas’ writing style is thrillingly unique. And this is coming from someone who’s read a novel a week since third grade. Teacher Harry Tyke, the main character, is despondent and fat and quite unmotivated. But then he meets a remarkable woman who might just be the inspiration he needs to change his life. Obstacles pile unrelentingly in his way, each one setting my heart pounding. Harry Tyke’s failures and victories felt like m ...more

Laura Thomas has devised a character in Harry Tykes that many can empathize with. He is a disillusioned, negative, unhappy individual with a huge dose of low self esteem. Convinced he has made bad choices in his life, he does nothing about it except wallow in self pity and remorse. When he meets the woman of his dreams, a series of events cause him to wake up. Although he thwarts every effort to make positive changes in his life; changes happen. Ms. Thomas writing style is fresh, contemporary an ...more

Harry Tyke, an unlikely hero with what seems to be a thousand regrets, will undoubtedly delight you with his humour and strange charm. Anyone who has ever felt unsure of themselves, or has ever been unhappy with their life will connect with and find a kindred spirit in Harry. Love, writing, quips on technology, and inspiring the young minds of tomorrow are only a few of the many intriguing themes present in this novel. Warning: do not read in a quiet place, unless you won't mind people giving yo ...more

This is fun at times, cute at time and definitely enjoyable. We can relate to Harry and his being disgruntled with where life has gone. We can all relate to at times not enjoying our jobs and wishing we followed a different path and we can relate to doing things we don’t want to because it is what others think our best. His mother’s feelings towards him are so sad to see. And what she did to him was wrong. She was a piece of work. This is a book showing Harry’s journey to discover himself again ...more

A great read with characters that leap from the page and a story that keeps you turning chapter to chapter, complimented by great insight into the importance of storytelling as a teaching tool and way to connect with each other.

I received this book from a goodreads giveaway.

What a nice surprise! I wasn't sure what to expect with this book, but I gave it a chance, and what a nice surprise. Very fun/enjoyable read with a good message.
