Naka's ambitions to become a model are hampered by the fact that she makes horrible faces every time she gets in front of a camera, but then she finds out that her rival, Umi, is actually a boy, and he helps her get modeling work.
Growing up means making some pretty hard decisions sometimes, especially when you try to weigh your own forward progress in career against the needs/goals of the one you love. Umi and Naka have some serious growing pains here as they each go forward. What I like is seeing that Naka does have what it takes to be a model.
Nosatsu Junkie was one of the first manga I read in its entirety back when I was in high school. Because of this, I knew that I’d be going into this read with fond memories attached to the story.
Even with that, I genuinely enjoyed rereading this manga. While I’ve never been a model myself – nor do I ever expect to be – I found it interesting to read about young models learning to balance their careers with their schooling.
This is a fun read, though I don’t know how realistic it is. I highly doubt that many people would succeed at or even try to keep the secret that Umi does in the real world. Also, in this day and age, I doubt that it’s something that many people would need to do. The world is more accepting of things now than they were even 10 years ago. Without going into spoilers, I think it’s possible for someone to model the way Umi does in this story without having to keep the same kind of secret.
OMG- I'm such a dork! I read volume 6, 7, and 8 of Nosatsu Junkie on the computer in ONE sitting. Besides my eyes almost falling out of my head, I really liked all three. (of course, on goodreads, they didn't have 7 and 8 in the book search thingy.) I loved Umi's jealousy towards Naka... and YES! HE FINALLY KISSED HER! it's about freakin' time! So, in short, great books! :D
Volume Contains Chapters 29 - 33: This volume was a lot of fun and it seems Umi and Naka's relationship might be about to pick up. The bonus chapter at the end of the volume "Peeping" was also really cute. I am looking forward to the next volume.
I really wish tokay pop didn't go out of business in the USA that way I could've been able to buy this series in book form. I just love the relationship between Naka and Umi and all their friends.
