Excellent book for the person looking for their best companion. Details qualities such as how likely they are to stray, protectiveness, quietness, good with children for each breed. Includes the more popular mixed breeds.

We recently adopted a hound dog and throughout the process of finding her, our youngest was fascinated by different websites that help prospective owners find the right breed of dog for their lifestyle.

This is a helpful book that highlights many different breeds, based on size. Each breed is described in terms of the care required and temperament of the dog as well as rated on the attitude toward other dogs, quietness, destructiveness, protective behavior, likelihood of straying, compatibility with children, and ease of training.

It's a good reference and has many colorful photographs of each breed. I would have liked to have a section that discusses mixed breed dogs and the benefits of owning a 'mutt.'

I found other books on choosing breeds to be more helpful. This has a very brief info page about lots of breeds, but doesn't help you process which ones will fit in your home and lifestyle. You have to put all the information together yourself, as far as comparing breeds and lifestyle.
