Current is a second chance love story that has romance, steam, and even a good bit of mystery and suspense. I listened to the audio of this book and I found myself piddling around the house just to keep listening and find out what was going to happen next. A few of these twists were predictable, but there were a few that really shocked me! I enjoyed the element of surprise.
I always love a good second chance romance story. I especially love it when the two are childhood/high school sweethearts. Jake and June spent one summer together. They were blissfully in love, but Jake's family issues tore them apart. They spent a lot of time away from each other, but June never forgot about Jake and Jake never forgot about her.
Along with Jake and June, there were some great secondary characters that put a lot of fun and humor in the story. I enjoyed this couples romance, and I rooted for them to overcome all the obstacles that hindered them from being together. Current was an entertaining read I liked a lot!

The reason why I requested this is that synopsis, it grabs you straight away, BUT what I thought reading that was not what I thought was going to happen, which had me down the wrong path right from the beginning, and that's where all my confusion came into play..
The beginning of the book sets you up, without giving any plot twists or turns away pay attention to the very first chapter of the book..
June is always searching for that lost childhood friend and thinks she finds him in Lucas, so many things race through your mind, lines become blurry, is Lucas, Jake?? Is he a long lost son?? Did Jake suffer amnesia?? Is that why June can see so many similarities between the two boys GAH!! My brain is not equipped to unravel mysteries..
I lost someone once and my biggest dream would be that I'd find then again, and that maybe I'd live happily ever after.
Jake suffered abuse at the hands of his alcoholic father both physically and psychologically from a very young age, he always felt like he was unwanted, unloved, the only time we see a glimpse of true happiness is his time he spent with his childhood friend June..The two were inseparable..

Current is so cleverly done, the anticipation, the intrigue has you guessing throughout. Jake is like one of those pop up in the box thingys one minute he's there the next he's gone like a magic trick..I kind of wanted to cement him to one place..
I guess for me it kind of felt too rushed (But this is just my opinion and your opinion may be different to mine) as you reach that half way mark because it jumps, 6 months had gone, then it jumped to 6 years past so I kind of missed the in betweens of the story, then it picked up again, so I kind of felt like I as in a state of whip lash, BUT it still held my attention throughout..

This book had a lot of potential and a promising plot but it failed for me in many directions.
1. The writing is not good enough. There are too many editing mistakes. Also, 90% of the book is told by the heroine's point of view but in 2 chapters, where the hero is present but the heroine isn't, events are told by the writer. This was really weird. I have no idea why these chapters were not told by the hero but the writer. It didn't flow and it felt weird.
2. The blurb promises something, and we get something else, or I thought so... here is the blurb:

June would have done anything for Jake. The two were inseparable. He was going to run away to be with her. Then, his abusive father destroyed their happiness. So, it may be my fault but I really thought I was going to read a book in which the mystery of Lucas will slowly be solved. Is he her teenage crush Jake? If he is, why does he call himself Lucas? Are they the same person? Has he lost his memory?
Well, you get all the answers in Chapter 4 and 5 and then the book is no good any more; it loses all its mysterious tone and the excitement is gone and it falls into that cliché plotline...

Reading that plot synopsis, you can't not help but be intrigued. I mean, several depictions come to mind in regards to the whole JakeXLucas mystery~~ are they the same guy? is there a twin? does he have amnesia? is he pretending not to know her? and so on. Basically, if it is the same guy, what is the deal? And if not, where is Jake? And who will she choose in the end?
I know, to some reading my review, I was thinking too much into the premise and going way of course...but hey, that's just my wild imagination getting away from me for you. ;)
I was deeply besotted to the lost love element of this and June's story and her journey of not only trying to figure the mystery out, but to also, grasp some finally well deserved peace and solace in her life.
After all, hers, like many of us in life, haven't had things easy.
What I like about June and even Jake throughout, was that there was an unbreakable bond there that could never die. As obstacle and obstacle tried and tried them again, what I enjoyed was their devotion and faith (even when they doubted themselves and all things looked bleak) to one another.
Anyway, I don't want to give out more because it would entail spoilers, so I'll end it here.

Abby McCarthy hit Current out of the park!! I freaking loved it from start to finish. She sucked me right in and kept me guessing... I could not put it down. Current takes us on a mysterious, thought provoking and tumultuous ride with just a bit of darkness! Expect the unexpected! This ride focuses on an unfathomable love story with a very original plot. It's witty and clever with shocking twists and turns. Making this anything but your typical love story. June and Jake are strong, memorable characters that will sneak into your heart and have you begging for their HEA. I'm dying to get into more details about the plot and characters, but I can not without giving anything away... Just know Current will tug at your heart and mess with your mind, leaving you speechless!
I have read and loved all of Abby's books. But Current is the book that puts her on a whole new level. She dug deep and it paid off!! She should be so proud. She just gets better and better.

I can't believe I waited so long to read a book by this author as this was agreed read. I will certainly be reading more of her books in the future.
After reading the synopsis of this story I was looking forward to reading this. Thankfully the author didn't disappoint as I loved it and ended up reading it in one sitting.
This is one of them books that I find hard to review as I don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone. What I will say is if your looking for an emotional romantic read then I highly recommend this book.
I had goosebumps reading parts of it.
Amazing read that will be on my re read list. Loved it.

When Jake was first introduced he was only 17 and so sweet! Then when we met him again he was the keyboardist in a band! Lastly, he showed up as a tattooed, alpha bad boy! Need I say more!!! Great read and great characters!

I always am excited to read a book that takes place near me. I'm not sure if it's like that for everyone, but for me, it's a bit nostalgic. Some of the events, and places are so familiar that I could have been a character in this book. I'm proud to say the author, and I are from the same area, so I can attest that she hit the nail on the head, and not with just the scenery, but with the story as well. This was a quick read for me since I couldn't put it down. Current includes some of my favorite things first love, second chance romance, mystery, and suspense. It had some very interesting plot twists. I also have to say the writing was flawless. It flowed like the perfect song that I would love to sing along with.
We meet June who is a college student, and a music writer for a newspaper. When one night while she's covering a band, she meets Lucas, who reminds her so much of someone else who she cared for deeply, well more than deeply actually, but he's familiar, and in a way she's confused because she doesn't trust herself. Is she attracted to him because he reminds her of the past. A time she's never quite been able to get over. She battles with her feelings, because she likes the way, she feels when they are together. I felt conflicted for her. I didn't share her feelings for her first love. I didn't know him, but Lucas was sweet, and sincere. He made her feel special, and He had some very enchanting qualities. The events that unraveled throughout the book weren't smooth, and a little bumpy. They were also nail biting and pace the floor interesting. I'm not sure I can put it into words without spoiling it, so I'll leave it at that.
June was a strong, and unique character. She had a good head on her shoulders, and everything she did was carefully thought out, so she could make the best decision for everyone involved. The book span's years, but there was never a time where I said to myself why did she do or say that.The hero in this story seems to be her other half, and there were instances where I thought this guy was intense, but there's a reason behind his actions, and I was happy to see everything pan out.
This was a phenomenal book, between the writing, and the story it was close to perfect. I liked to have seen a little more background on a few of the characters that piqued my interest. Current is a standalone, but I'd love to see more from the supporting cast. I would recommend this book to any romance junkie, or anyone who enjoys getting lost in a book. It is quite a journey from beginning to end.

Life is like a current. It has that ripple effect. This is what happens to June and Jake their lives were turned by the current. Jake doesn't come from the best of homes but when he becomes friends with June he sees there are light and beauty outside his darkness. Their friendship grows as time passes.
June is in college living the all-American dream of college life she's writing a piece for a paper and finds herself so drawn to the singer Luke. He looks familiar. She can't shake this feeling like she knows him

Life throws a curve ball and it just smacks you into reality with the turn of events that take place for June. It's something you don't see coming, the connection these two have comes once in a lifetime. Luke doesn't know where to begin with June and the events that happened to him just leaves him not being able to express them.
This is a beautiful story about two kids that have gone through life events that change their course. Will they be able to get back to the way things were or will life define their course? It's an emotional roller coaster, anguish, suspense and love all in this one book. I devoured this in one sitting. I honestly couldn't get enough and when it was over I was so mad. this isn't like Abby's other books this is my top favorite of hers. She shows her growth writing, but also delivers a beautiful love/tragic story.

You can’t deny such a strong current between two people. But when another current is going against them, are they really strong enough to hold on and pull through it?
I enjoyed the twists and turns that Abby added to the story to give it more depth. The characters were intriguing and believable. Overall, it was good read. I look forward to seeing what Abby comes out with next – hoping maybe another book in this series about some secondary characters.

Secrets, Loss, and Love!
This was such a beautiful story, about young love that gets torn apart by consequences. This is one heck of an emotional rollercoaster that will have you reaching for the tissues.
June has loved Jake since she was 15. There was never a doubt that he was her first, and he will be her last love. But when a tragic day tears them apart, June doesn’t see Jake again. Fast forward years later, June still misses him. Holding out a hope that one day she will be reunited with the one boy who holds her heart.
Lucas walks into June’s life only to remind her of what she lost. The boy with the blue-green eyes. The one that no matter how many years later she still loves. Lucas takes her on a whirlwind romance, and she finds herself falling, but is it because of Lucas, or because he reminds her so much of Jake?
When secrets are revealed it threatens to rip June’s heart apart again. Will the past finally be the end of life as she knows it? Or will the secrets that they both hold be able to bring them together? This was an incredible story with beautiful characters who find their way into your heart and don’t let go.

Jake and June will be the romance you want to reread. I am so disappointed that I didn't read this book sooner. I could have experienced all the things if only I had picked it up!!
As it stands, I listened to this audio and it was perfection. The narrator is the perfect June. She's the perfect third person voice for Jake's scenes--despite it not being in his POV.
Well written, beautifully crafted, and a bit magical. Current will pull you in. Current will push you away. Current will keep you.

I have read everyone of Abby McCarthy book she has written to this date and I can say this is a whole other level for her. Its heart tugging and whole new sexy for her. In Current we meet June, a strong girl next door who heart has been trampled but she keeps looking for that light in her life. We meet June again after "Jake". She still searching for that lost boy that disappeared from her life and in walks in the bad boy sexy mysterious musician Lucas. But is that what attracts June to Lucas or the canny resemblance to her first love. We get the question could it be "Jake" or isn't it. Which as a reader pulls you right in.
"But like a magnetic pull my feet aimlessly take me center stage. No one moving around me matters because my eyes are fixed on the man singing. HIs eyes are so familiar. It can't be him can it?"-June
Okay I stop here you get to this part of the story and think you know what's next but you have no idea!! I MEAN NO IDEA!!! What happens next in June story I will refer to the title Current. Just like the river current there are twist and turns. It hot, cold, rocks that will scrapes your heart, sticks that will bruise you emotions but just when it looks like the current comes to a calm think again!!!
Abby has bruised my heart again but I love her for it because with June, Jake and Lucas we get her new normal. A regular story with elements from what traditionally we love about are leading men. The bad boy with a broken past musician. We get a boy who loves a girl to so much he move mountains and kill anyone for. Then we get a man who will stop at nothing to see her happy but then lives with a million regrets. Who wont love that combination?
Current is for the reader who loves a classic love story with all the elements you have come to love with the girl next door loving the troubled boy to loving that bad boy with a million regrets.

I think my favorite thing about following an author is bearing witness to their growth as a writer. Watching them evolve from their first book to their latest gives us a glimpse at what an author wants for themselves, the readers and the characters that speak to them. Abby McCarthy shines as an example of that growth. Her latest book, Current, holds the proof. In this book, she steps out of her comfort zone and treats us to new twists, turns and writing styles. She brings us themes of love never forgotten, hope for the future, and danger where you least expect it.
Jake and June meet when love is the world. Those sweet teenage years where the world feels like your oyster and love will conquer all. Though they come from completely different worlds, what they feel for each other is undeniable and deep; the kind of thing that lasts a lifetime. When a series of events rips that love apart, June and Jake are left with only sweet memories of their time together. Fast forward a few years and we find that June has met a stranger who reminds her so much of Jake, but is a different person. Could it be him? Could it be Jake? I have read all of Abby McCarthy's book and was excited when she came out with this book, and I was not disappointed after reading.
Ms. McCarthy wrote a story about a second chance love story. This story covered the trials and tribulations of a young couple who fell in love and then lost each other over a tragedy. When they found each other again I was overjoyed. That is when Ms. McCarthy ripped my heart out and crushed it with a twist. Just when I was hoping there was a HEA coming she through in a bigger twist that shredded my heart. This story kept me on the edge of my seat until I read the last page and let out a breath when June and Lucas finally found their HEA. Thank you for the emotional roller coaster or a ride.
The characters in this story will capture your heart from the first page. Lucas and June have to go through so much tragedy and heart break in their life. Follow them from their teenage years, through collage and into adult hood.
This was a great read that had me holding my breath many times during the story. You will feel the love and the heartache that every character has to endure. This is my first time reading this author. I was pleasantly surprised! The synopsis drags you right into wondering what sort of mystery will unfold as the story goes along.
I admit being concerned as the story starts to take off that the heroine could not possible be that clueless. She is redeemed somewhat by always second guessing what is going on. I'd like to think, no matter how much time has passed, the person you gave your heart to would be recognizable to you. Deception is also not a good way to start off a relationship.
Never fear, folks, the author gets around to all the explanations for bad behaviors. If ever there were two people who deserve to have an HEA, Jake and June are those people. The story takes them from star crossed teens to ten years later. What remains true throughout is their love seated deep in their hearts for one another. No matter the time or distance, their souls recognize each other.
"You're my current, the only thing that's kept me moving all these years. I hate what's happened to us, but I promise you June,....I'm not going anywhere."
Give this one a chance. Happy to pick up a new author and show some love. Looking forward to reading future stories by her.

So I don't know where to start.
Current is the 4th book by Abby McCarthy. She has grown with ever single book. I swear she's getting better and better with each book. Abby has taken my heart and soul on one heck of a roller coaster ride with this book and I am still feeling the high!
This book is the perfect mix, it's a love story, well developed characters that will make you laugh, smile, cry and fall in love all over, oh yeah and a twist that will knock your socks off. And don't worry - there is some serious sexy too! Abby has just put together the perfect book in Current.
June and Jake are from two different worlds but the connection is undeniable. Just like the current of a river changes their lives, their is an ongoing current of electricity that bonds these two. Their friendship, loyalty and utter devotion to each other is awe inspiring.
Their lives take a turn that neither would have ever expected, more than once. Just like the current can take you down another path, their lives will forever be changed.
This book is an absolute must read!

I am speechless! In a really good and happy way. I love this author. One of the only authors that I will read MC books from. So when I saw that this book was not an MC story it totally jumped on it because if she can have me sit and read MC then this one would be even better! And yes omg! yes!
I started this book without reading what it was about. From page one to the end this book never let me down. It's well written, flows nicely and keeps you hooked. The main characters in this story are easy to fall for. I really liked Jake and June. I specially loved how June isn't annoying. You even end up loving the other characters in this story.. Well the ones that aren't assholes haha. But yes, this story takes you on a journey of love and heartbreak. You get a bit of a mystery and you get action in it too.
Jake has definitely become my 1st book boyfriend of 2016! I am sitting here typing and I can't stop myself from thinking about this book. AMAZING! everyone must read it.

I love this book! I love the way Abby writes. It flows so well and drags you into the story, like you're a fly on the wall watching everything happen. I loved reading about a place I'm familiar with, I don't live too far from Cleveland.
While reading this I was thinking this book was different than the other books I've read from Abby. Then I got to the plot twist. It was a great twist that I didn't see coming and it was all done in Abby's style, which I absolutely love. I really hope there will be other books. I have to find out more about Liz and Dietz.
I have to give this book 5 stars. It's a great story and that plot twist blew me away.

Current was recommended to me by a fellow book friend, so I thought I would give it a try. I'm always looking for new books and authors to try. I am so glad I did! It was something different than what's saturating the book world! That excites me to more than you can imagine!
While reading Current, I was rooting so hard for Jake and June to get their HEA. These poor characters were put through the ringer!
All in all this book was fantastic!

I'll admit that the blurb for this book instantly drew me in and I knew I had to read it. I have read book by Abby McCarthy before and really enjoyed them, so I was really excited to start Current. I could not put this book down, and the book definitely lived up to the blurb. This was such a great story, and it just reminded me of everything that I have loved about Abby's books in the past. It was well written and captivated me right from the start, and I loved that it was different.
June Withers and Jake Daniels fell in love when they were just kids. But life tore them apart and destroyed everything that they had found together. Years later, June is writing an article about a band and the keyboardist resembles the man that she believes Jake would look like after years of aging. But Lucas shows no recognition of her, and she finds herself falling in love all over again, this time as an adult. June and Lucas move forward though he reminds her of Jake, and once again June's happiness is torn away just as she had found love. As June learns that what she thought she knew was actually a web of lies, she must once again try to pick up the pieces and move on. Six more years pass before June is finally at peace with her life, but once again everything changes when a love from her past reappears. This time though, June is the one that has a secret.
I can't really go into much here, because I really don't want to spoil anything. So I will just say that I really loved these characters. They were real and easy to relate to, and my heart really went out to all of them. They didn't always make the right decisions, yet I understood their actions perfectly and really got their motivation. I thought that there was a lot of love here, and I hated that these characters had dealt with so much loss and that there were so many things always seeming to stand in their way. I really believed that Abby McCarthy would do all of them justice though, and to me she did.
Overall, this was a really great story. It was emotional and captivating, and I read it in one sitting because I couldn't put it down. I thought it was such an interesting and different story and I hadn't read anything like it. I will say that at times it did seem to be a bit far fetched and convenient, as some of the things that happened and the amount of bad things that happened just seemed to be too many and too frequent. But I was so drawn in and invested, that I enjoyed the story regardless and took it for the work of fiction that it was. I am becoming a huge fan of Abby's, and I know that this won't be my last book from her. I highly recommend this one, and I think a lot of readers will enjoy this story as much as I did.

Loved the story of Jake and June! This review contains spoilers so stop now if you don't want to read them.
Jake and June are childhood sweethearts that are separated by a terrible tragedy when she leaves her summer home at age 15 to go back to the city with her parents. He lives next door and being 17 is caught up in his fathers life of crime as a debt to be repaid. They find themselves again 7 years later going by the name of Lucas only to be separated again when he is jailed for a his fathers disappearance. 6 more years pass and she sees him again after her car was stolen and he works at the shop repairing it. He has been out of jail for 2 years however he never contacts her thinking she is better off without him, that he is no good. But once he sees her and she is so angry he has to explain why he took the plea deal and went to jail for 4 years.
During this time she has had his baby, Lily who is now 6 years old and he never knew about her because he returned all her letters unopened she mailed him in prison. They reconnect however she is having a hard time letting go of the past decisions he made without her and she leaves with Lily to go back to the summer home and face the past. He joins her but the past comes back to haunt her as his father who is not dead tries to kill them.
Really good writing and story line, couple of things that bugged me are when she goes to get her stuff out of her car at the repair shop, she doesn't take the obvious car seat that he would have seen and known about Lily. It took me a couple of chapters to get into this book. When I first started it, I thought it was a coming to age type book. Not that I haven’t read them, I have. They’re just not many out there that I enjoy but when I do, I feel like it’s a gem! However, this was not a coming of age story. This was a story of finding your soul mate. Not your first love your soul mate. After a couple of chapters, I was HOOKED! I couldn’t put it down. I had it done in a day. With those of you that have kids (I have 3) understands how hard it is to get through a book in one day. Stouffers frozen lasagna was my friend that night.
What I loved about the story of June and Jake was the loyalty they have for one another. I loved how the author portrayed June as a strong, independent woman that would let the universe get her down when it took away what she loved most. I loved how Jake, so strong and protective, could turn to mush. I loved how much the author made me feel when it came to Jake. I felt his anger, his love, his determination to protect his family. There was a point in the book where he walks in the house and sees everything he has missed and I just cried! I just kind of put myself in his place to see what he would see, to see what he would feel and when an author can write words where you see yourself in their shoes, and feel what they can feel… amazing!!!
Let’s not forget the twists, Ms. McCarthy set into place. They’re not big twist but they are things you didn’t see coming so, yes, definite shock value. The story was a little slow but it flowed nice and the characters were developed well.
Abby McCarty is an exceptional writer and if don’t know about her, you should!!
What I loved about the story of June and Jake was the loyalty they have for one another. I loved how the author portrayed June as a strong, independent woman that would let the universe get her down when it took away what she loved most. I loved how Jake, so strong and protective, could turn to mush. I loved how much the author made me feel when it came to Jake. I felt his anger, his love, his determination to protect his family. There was a point in the book where he walks in the house and sees everything he has missed and I just cried! Current is so different from Abby's Wreck you series, which I loved and couldn't put down. She has brought June and Jakes story to life. You know you are reading a great book when you see the characters come to life. You can picture them in the scene that you are reading. Abby has always been able to give her character's life but in Current I can smell the smells they are experiencing, the swamp, the fish they were cleaning. Mr. Daniels whiskey breath. I love that about Abby!
It starts out with Jane in a bar going to met her friend so she an do a review on this band. Her life will forever change as it did the first time she met the love of her life at a young age, but hasn't seen him in years. Her eyes meet Lucas's and she sees something familiar she wants it to be him so bad but it can't be, it's not. But he brings back old feelings that she once felt for her Jake which she thought were buried. She tries to shake it off but she couldn't give it up. She goes back in time remembering, but some of her thoughts were not something she cared to think about. Abby takes you through their story, their ups their downs. Is it him, how could this be. She takes you on a ride of your life. Just as you think everything is going to be ok with them, it's not. Just when you think you know how this story is going to end, you don't. I fell in love with Jake and June, and I hate Mr. Daniels. If ever there is someone who is evil, he is. If you haven't read this yet you are missing a great read. When I first started it, I thought it was a coming to age type book. Not that I haven’t read them, I have. They’re just not many out there that I enjoy but when I do, I feel like it’s a gem! However, this was not a coming of age story. This was a story of finding your soul mate. Not your first love your soul mate. After a couple of chapters, I was HOOKED! I couldn’t put it down. I had it done in a day. With those of you that have kids (I have 3) understands how hard it is to get through a book in one day. Stouffers frozen lasagna was my friend that night.
