Every current military or political student of modern Russia needs to read this seminal work by Chris Donnelly. The continuity of doctrinal thought, of leadership style, of analysis, of historical & cultural themes, and of whole of government approach to foreign, defense and economic policy...are all rooted in the Soviet and Tsarist experience. If anyone knows of any modern example of such an in-depth study of Russian military in print, let me know!
