This was a 3.5 star enjoyable book. I really liked the heroine, Philadelphia aka Dell, and the hero, Rory. She was a strong female character not a whiny simpering ninny. He was sexy with a tortured past.
They had some good chemistry together and there were a couple of nicely written sex scenes, so this book is not rated G.

There is quite a bit of dialogue, (I like lots of dialogue). The story line and plot were interesting. This was different from the typical historical romance set in London with

No cookie-cutter characters here and a plot that keeps you turning pages. Her Wicked Captain is Sandra Jones at her historical-writing best!

If you’re looking for a historical that breaks away from merry ol’ England then Her Wicked Captain may be your cup of tea.

This book took me flowing up and down the waters of the Mississippi, engaging in high-stakes poker games, gun duels, and some steamy, sensual moments. Philadelphia “Dell” Samuels and Rory Campbell never follow the easy route. From their emerging romance to problems they face, both hero and heroine handle each decision in ways that bre

4 and 1/2 Stars! A Riverboat Gambling Adventure

The story begins in Missouri in the 1850s with a duel where Rory Campbell, a gambler and steamboat captain, plays second for his employer, Quintus Moreaux, a riverboat gambler and an ruthless, abusive man. Rory has a plan to get free of Moreaux and it involves his childhood friend, Philadelphia (Dell) Samuels, the daughter of Moreaux’s dead wife and her black lover.

Like her mother, Dell has an uncanny ability to read people. Rory wants her to help

Philadelphia "Dell" Samuels is a woman who hides almost everything about herself, being part black, her fortune telling/reading folks for money & being her deceased mom's kid. Why do you ask? Being part black when slavery is legal, you lie thru your teeth! She does her "fortune telling" for money on the side to hide from her "use De

Her Wicked Captain (River Rogues Series) by Sandra Jones

Why you will enjoy this book:
The Setting – the southern United States is often a historical romance novel setting, but not like this. We find our heroine Philadelphia (Dell) living in squalor in the Ozarks. She travels along the Mississippi River to Memphis on The Dark Enchantress. These steamboats travel up and down the rivers, captained and crewed by a host of characters. It’s a fascinating look at America in the South and the lives of th

Wow, I was immediately drawn to the cover. Isn’t it gorgeous?! Then I was sucked in by the blurb. A historical romance set on the Mississippi River! There’s gambling and boozing and dueling… and romancing.

I absolutely loved the set up for this story! There was so much going on I don’t even know where to begin.

First, you have Philadelphia. Years ago, when she was a young child, Dell’s mother took her away and left her step-father, Quintus Moreaux AKA the Monster of the Mississippi. Not long lat

This was a good first book in this new series. I really liked Dell and Rory. They were great together and gave each other just enough crap for me to love them. I really enjoyed how Dell wasn’t a character that just cowed to a man and was timid. She was strong willed and did what she needed to do. Rory was a sweetie and he just fumbled all over himself sometimes which was super charming. I also enjoyed many of the supporting characters and hope we get to see more of them. My only critique of this ...more

I just finished "Her Wicked Captain" and had to write a review right away because I absolutely loved it. And there were so many things to love! Heroine Dell's strong backbone comes first to mind, but also hero Rory's roguish playfulness coupled with his baggage...boy...the back stories of these two alone is worth the read. I loved the setting along the banks of the Mississippi River, I loved the commentary on slavery, and I loved the action and intrigue that the novel offered. A wonderful book.

I'll admit that this took a while for me to get into. I found that the first half of the book just dragged a bit and I was finding it hard to stay interested. It's a shame, because I enjoyed the second half of the story much more as the plot really got under way.

Anyway, let's talk characters. Rory is our hero of the story and he's certainly a different one that I'm used to reading in historicals. He's the right hand man of a cruel gambler who runs the Missi

I received this from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. I just did not love it. The story was okay I guess but I just did not love Rory. He just kind of gets on my nerves at some points during the book. Other than that I just did not love it.
