It's _okay_, which is kind of the problem. It's readable, it's competently done, and as a sampler set of ideas from the Star*Drive setting, it's diverse. But after getting through about 150 pages I couldn't point to any idea and say that it was a new and unique take the concept. It was a serviceable enough scaffolding for the stories, and the stories failed to enthrall. There's only so many uninspired takes on "Cosmic Horror From Beyond Known Space" and "Mystery Monster Beaten by SCIENCE!" that I'm willing to consume.

This book is a collection of short stories set in the Star Drive universe. Contributing authors include Robert Silverberg and Karen Haber(who are husband and wife), Gary A. Braunbeck, Matthew J. Costello, Diane Duane, William H. Keith Jr. a.k.a. Ian Douglas, Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Dean Wesley Smith, Michael A. Stackpole, Richard Baker, John Helfers, Philip Athans. The stories are set in the Verge, which is a remote region of space with humans and aliens living and sometimes fighting together. Although part of a series these short stories can be read as stand-alone and enjoyed without prior knowledge of the Star Drive series.

This is a collection of stories set in the StarDrive universe. But all of these are SPOOKY. This Universe is Old and some parts of it are best left alone.
My favorite: Point of Contraction-- Look up!. . .Look Up! Say hello to Mommy and Daddy

Read
March 5, 2010Good overall view of the game setting, although some stories were a little contrived while others had way too much wording, and not enough story. I did nto like Diane Duanes story as it was wordie but still predictable.
