The Prophet of the Restoration, Joseph Smith, taught the world more of the doctrine and practical application of the gospel of Jesus Christ than it had known for centuries. In this enlightening eight-lecture series, Dr. Truman G. Madsen, a renowned expert on Joseph Smith, offers insights into the Prophet’s teachings on such topics as divine authority, the family, the nature and role of Christ, and the temple. Sharing faith-promoting events from Joseph’s life to illustrate, Dr. Madsen offers a thoughtful analysis of eternal principles and the Prophet’s role in restoring them to the earth. 8 lectures on 5 compact discs Approx. running 355 min.
Truman Grant Madsen was an American professor of religion and philosophy at Brigham Young University (BYU) and director of the Brigham Young University Jerusalem Center for Near Eastern Studies. He was a prolific author, a recognized authority on Joseph Smith Jr., and a popular lecturer among Latter-day Saints. At one point, Madsen was an instructor at the LDS Institute of Religion in Berkeley, California.
This is an eight lectures series presented by Truman Madson, a renowned expert on Joseph Smith. He presented them at the Marriott Center at BYU, but listening to them felt like a home fireside as he shared faith-promoting stories and unique, beautiful teaching of the prophet of the restoration. If I had to choose between his book on Joseph Smith and this lecture series, I would choose the book as it felt more comprehensive (the lectures seemed more focused on his teachings).
Chapters: 1-Jospeh smith, who was he? 2-Joseph Smith and the Saintly Life 3-Joseph Smith’s Vision of the church 4-On Money Matters 5-On Divine Authority 6-Joseph Smith and The Family 7-Nature and Role of Christ 8-Joseph Smith and the temple
I enjoyed this as a more doctrinal look at Joseph Smith. I can't say that everything I want to know has been laid out, but I think there are great treasures of truth and history in this book. I really felt uplifted by reading it and am grateful for Truman G. Madden's study and testimony of the prophet and how it has strengthened mine.
This is a series of lectures on the prophet. It's organized by topic rather than chronology and there were several stories I hadn't heard. It was both informative and interesting.
This is another great set of lectures about the life and views of Joseph the Prophet. I highly recommend them. They are organized by topic and are very well put together and edifying.
I love listening to Truman! I feel like I am sitting on the front row of the best institute class in the world! I always turn on Truman when I am mopping the floor or doing the dishes. I love the way he portrays the Prophet Joseph Smith in this lecture series and I am so grateful that I can listen to it in my own home. I highly recommend it to everyone! I have learned so much from this audio book.
So good!!!! It is really an in depth book about who Joseph Smith was. It was so interesting to hear about all the nuances that made him who he was. I really gained an even greater appreciation for him....if that's possible.
This was very nastalgic. I listened to this lecture series as a Mormon missionary in Paraguay in 2000 and had forgotten so much of it. Good lectures about a great man.
listened to these as well. Ditto on my other review. I like listening to Truman Madsen. He's an engaging speaker and these tapes are full of amazing things.
