The Star Society

Rate this book
Uncover the captivating tale of two extraordinary sisters in The Star Society, a thrilling historical novel that transports readers from the shadows of the Dutch Resistance to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. Inspired by the indomitable spirit of Audrey Hepburn, this gripping story follows Ada and Ingrid as they reunite after World War II, embarking on a journey of justice, survival, and secrets amid the backdrop of the Red Scare in Hollywood.

A new name, a new country, and a coveted title as Hollywood's newest rising star: by 1946, actress Ada Worthington-Fox has discarded the life she left in war-torn Arnhem, where she worked for the Dutch resistance before Gestapo imprisonment prompted her to flee after release. But that life is thrust back into the spotlight when Ingrid--the sister she believed dead--shows up on her doorstep.

Politically-minded Ingrid escaped the Nazi invasion of Arnhem and fled to Washinton, D.C. where she became a private investigator. Now, she has been sent to root out communist influences in Hollywood. Her target: Ada Worthington-Fox, the sister she long thought lost to her. Ingrid must hide her true purpose as she shields Ada from sneaky reporters, damaging rumors, and increasing threats, all while fighting to uncover which side her sister is truly on before Ingrid's efforts to help her are too late.

Yet, Ada has her own mission: locating the Gestapo agent who terrorized her hometown and bringing him to justice. But delving into her past would risk alerting the press to a life too personal to expose. As the rising fear of communism threatens everyone, she turns to her sister, believing Ingrid's ties to Washington may be her only hope for success.

But the connections between Ada's elusive Nazi and Ingrid's communist witch hunt might be stronger than they realize. Both sisters share the darkest secret of all, one that risks their very lives if ever exposed. As they come closer to identifying Ada's target and as Ingrid's investigation intensifies, they will need to decide what is more important: justice or safety, keeping silent or taking a stand, and, above all, if their loyalty to one another is worth risking the post-war lives they've fought to build.

This book was brilliant. Heartbreaking…but brilliant. I can’t recall a book that left such an impact on me and had me thinking about it for hours on end. The tale of two sisters and their journey through war and after…I am speechless. I adored Ada and Ingrid and both their voices. The author was gentle, yet the strength of this story is remarkable. I ate it up and cried at the end.

Thank you to Harper Muse Audiobooks and NetGalley for providing me with an audio ARC. All opinions are my own.

The Star Society is a historical spy thriller about sisterhood, old Hollywood glamour, secrets and betrayal.

Ada and Ingrid are two sisters that endured WWII and the German occupation. After the war they each go their separate ways. Once in the US, Ada becomes a Hollywood sensation and activist Ingrid is assigned to keep an eye on Ada and find out if she is a communist who has inflitrated Hollywood. The sisters are reunited but what will they do with their assignments?

The dual timelines bring to life the harsh and beautiful lives of these two sisters. The story is gripping, the loss is palpable and the writing is emotional. I enjoyed both characters and their voices come through clearly. I was captivated by this book and the whole atmosphere it brought.
Thank you Netgalley and Harper Muse for this eARC. All opinions are entirely my own.

Who doesn't love a good historical? Better yet, make it a historical spy thriller/mystery and it's downright hard to resist.

I absolutely loved this mystery littered with WWII resistance and old Hollywood flair. It was both enchanting and thrilling to see what these two sisters went through, what lies they told, what secrets they each held, and how, together, they were unstoppable.

This is one I soon won't be forgetting! I can't recommend this one enough to those interested in the '40 both overseas and in the USA and those that love a good mystery that will keep you on your toes and with new secrets, new lies, and new discoveries with each new chapter revealed.

This was a very intriguing read. A World War II story that I haven't read. With Jewish sympathizing twin sisters in Holland, and one of them flees before the war even starts and the other stays with their Nazi sympathizing Mother and her Nazi boyfriend.

Ada Worthington-Fox is the newest rising star in Hollywood with a very dark past. She comes directly from the Dutch Resistance to the Nazi's in World War II, but no one in America knows her dark past. Except her twin sister, who's been in the States for many years. When Ingrid comes to visit her sister's Hollywood house un-announced neither of them expected such an awkward or abrupt reunion.

Ingrid has been working as a glorified secretary, but sees an opportunity for advancement when her team at work puts their focus on her twin sister and her Hollywood clique. They suspect her and her party group of being communist, and they plan to send is several spies into their parties to gather evidence, then jail them all for their communist sympathies/actions.

This book was quite the juxtaposition between Hollywood and a war-torn Dutchland, but I found it intriguing none the less.

Inspired by the indomitable spirit of Audrey Hepburn, this gripping story follows Ada and Ingrid as they reunite after World War II, embarking on a journey of justice, survival, and secrets amid the backdrop of the Red Scare in Hollywood."

Ada and Ingrid left war-torn Arnhem during the war and do not know what happened to the other until they reunite in 1946. At that time Ada is a rising Hollywood star and Ingrid is hired to spy on her sister and see if she is a communist. Ada is determined to bring down the Nazi who invaded their home early on in the war. Both sisters are keeping secrets.

I was captivated by this gripping dual timeline story of espionage from start to finish. It is very well-written and Ada and Ingrid are full fleshed characters each with their own experiences. The horrors of the war are brought to light as well as survival, resilience, and the bonds of sisterhood following the war. It is emotional, engaging, and informative. I highly recommend adding this to your TBR. The audiobook performance by Saskia Maarveled is outstanding and brought the characters and tension to life.🎧📚

2.5…maybe 3? But I don’t want to give it a 3 😂

Okay this one was hard because I really wanted to like it but I felt like it was doing too much and also somehow not nearly enough. And I couldn’t for the life of me really get into it, even though this period of time is usually my JAM. I will say that the author’s note at the end was really cool!

PAGES: 448
RATING: 4 stars
GENRE: Historical Fiction

A BIG Thank You to Harper Muse Audiobooks & NetGalley for this advanced listening copy! Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

SYNOPSIS: The Star Society is a sweeping historical novel that follows two extraordinary sisters whose lives diverge and then collide against the dramatic backdrop of the mid-20th century. After surviving the horrors of World War II in their Dutch hometown of Arnhem, Ada & Ingrid find themselves on very different paths. Ada, having endured Gestapo imprisonment and escape, rebuilds her life in post-war Hollywood under a new name, finding fame & reinventing herself far from the war’s shadows. Meanwhile, Ingrid forges a new identity of her own in Washington, D.C., working as a private investigator in a nation increasingly gripped by fear of communism. When Ingrid unexpectedly arrives in Hollywood with an assignment tied to the Red Scare, she & Ada are forced to confront not only the political pressures of their era but also the secrets of their shared past. As their separate missions begin to overlap, the sisters must decide what matters most. Justice or safety, honesty or survival, and, above all, the strength of the bond that has both separated & sustained them.

QUICK & SPOILER-FREE REVIEW: I really enjoyed listening to The Star Society on audio. The story pulled me in right away, & I loved how it blended post-World War II history with Hollywood glamour & Cold War tension. The focus on sisterhood & reinvention added elements that kept me invested throughout. The audiobook format worked especially well for the dual perspectives, making it easy to stay engaged & connected to both storylines. This was a compelling, well-researched listen & a solid 4-star audiobook for me. I’m glad it was my first historical fiction of the year!

“When a ballerina takes center stage, she dances with levity and elegance, defying the way her body burns and bleeds, enduring the pain. Masking everything that must remain hidden. Every step and turn influences what the audience perceives and what they conclude,” (p. 1).

“Words are never just talk, never just noise, never just gossip; words hold meaning, sway opinions, prompt action,” (p. 60).

Arnhem in 1940 changes for the worse when it becomes occupied by soldiers. Every citizen is forced to forget their way of life for conformity. Ingrid and Aleida are twin sisters who each end up fleeing the country, but take different paths doing so. Ingrid flees first, leaving Aleida behind. Aleida helps with the resistance before making her own escape.

Now both are living in America and thriving. Both thinking the other sister had not made it out. Not escaped the hell that became their homeland. But both sisters hold secrets and if the wrong people find out - everything they’ve built here is in danger. Should they trust each other?

Aleida now goes by Ada and is a famous actress. Ingrid now reports to a handler and works for the government. And they’re about to reunite.

The story is told through the sister’s POVs and shifts between the 1940’s in Arnhem to 1946 in America. A sweeping, heart-crushing, yet beautiful story of survival, sisterly bonds, and loss.

🎧: Also listened to the audio and recommend it. It was a great listen.

Well, 2026 is off to a great start. First book of the year and I've already found a five-star?

The Star Society is a beautifully written story that takes readers from the Dutch Resistance in WWII all the way to the glitz and glam of late 1950s Hollywood. With Communism paranoia rampant in the entertainment industry, Ingrid is tasked with investigating a rising movie star, Ada Worthington Fox -- who also just so happens to be her long-lost twin. Ingrid is on a mission to protect her sister at all costs. But Ada has a mission of her own, bringing down the Gestapo agent who terrorized her hometown... and the stakes might be higher than either of them realized.

I love it when historical fiction collides with little-known (to me) bits of history, and this book provided an intriguing glimpse into the Red Scare in Hollywood, with snapshots of the Dutch Resistance. This specific Hollywood angle wasn't one I've seen explored in fiction before, and it felt fresh and glamorous, combined with a dash of mystery.

The characters were compelling and easy to connect with on an emotional level. The sisters' relationship and their dual quests for justice wove a strong theme throughout the story, and their voices and motives were distinct and equally memorable. While certain plot elements felt a little on the dramatic side, the narrative was layered and vivid, immersing me in this historical story from start to finish.

I listened to this book on audio, and I highly recommend that option as the narration was brilliant. The setting was luxuriously crafted, the characters strong and nuanced, and Saskia Maarleveld truly brought the whole thing to life.

This book was a hefty plot to tackle, with lots of elements, and yet it absolutely worked. Saab's writing is engaging, immersive, and beautiful. This nove; is perfect for historical fiction fans, and a true delight to have started the year with.

Apparently this is the first I’ve read from this author, but I will be keeping my eyes open for more from her!

This was wonderful!
It was also… scary, sad, enlightening, empowering, cringe-worthy, beautiful, delicate, spectacular, bright and sweet!
So yes, it hit pretty much every emotion… and brought me to my knees on several occasions.

Aleida and Ingrid are twins in Holland. WWII is brewing. There is a lot of talk going on, but things are not terrible yet…
‘Yet’ being the key word here.
As things start to heat up, Ingrid is worried that her boyfriend is going to have to fight in the war… for the Germans… something he does not want to do.
Meanwhile, Aleida is concerned for her beloved Ballet Dance Instructor who is Jewish. She is worried that she will be in trouble as they start hearing about the Jews being rounded up.
And… their mother is of no use. She actually seems to be ‘entertaining’ one of the German leaders! 😮😳

So, Aleida covers for Ingrid as she attempts to flee Holland. And she stays behind with her mother… until the Nazi she is with actually hurts Aleida. And then she needs to escape too.

Fast forward to several years later, and Aleida is now Ada Worthington-Fox… an up and coming starlet in Hollywood!
She is trying desperately to make a BIG NAME for herself… and seems to be succeeding!

Until one day a letter shows up on her doorstep with her prior name. 😮

This one pulled me in and held on tight. Interesting to read how Hollywood A-listers were reacting to all that was going on with Hitler. And, how many of them were spurned in the news. Sometimes for innocent things. Other times for taking part in things they shouldn’t have been…

But wow! What an incredible ride! And what wonderful insight we gained from reading this! And, it’s mentioned that this is loosely based on Audrey Hepburn… who I love! So, a total win-win for me!!

5+ blazing, hot, intriguing-yet-scary stars for me! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

#TheStarSociety by @GabriellaSaab and narrated wonderfully (and with such genuine emotion) by @SaskiaMaarleveld.

This book was inspired by Audrey Hepburn, whom the author says was her favorite actress growing up. While the story is definitely not about her, some of Audrey's life experiences were used in the story. Twin sisters, Ada (the character inspired by Audrey) & Ingrid live in the Netherlands during WWII and the German Occupation. Ingrid flees to the United States during this time and Ada stays and aids the Dutch resistance. Years after the war and not having heard from each other, Ingrid is assigned to gather information on an up-and-coming Hollywood starlet as to her political views and whether she is part of the Communist party that has infiltrated Hollywood. Ingrid realizes that it is her very sister that she will be investigating. She is ecstatic to know that her sister is alive and can't wait for the reunion between the two sisters, all the while having to stay true to her assignment. While together, she learns of what Ada went through and the atrocities she faced in the hands of a Gestapo SS and police leader (whom their mother brought into their home). This brings in the element of the postwar Nazis who escaped punishment, some at the very hands of the American government giving them immunity for helping to combat communism or aiding in the Space Race. This story had a lot of interesting elements of that time period in history, and I found it to be very enjoyable and full of enlightening information.

Many thanks to NetGalley & Harper Muse for the opportunity to read an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinions.

The Star Society is a dazzling, powerful historical novel that captures both the shadows of war and the glitter of Hollywood with unforgettable depth. Gabriella Saab brings us the story of Ada and Ingrid—two sisters reunited after believing the other lost to World War II—whose lives collide against the backdrop of the Red Scare, Hollywood glamour, and lingering wartime trauma.

What struck me most was the duality at the heart of this book: the contrast between Ada’s reinvention as a rising starlet and Ingrid’s undercover work as a D.C. investigator sent to uncover communist influence. Their bond is complicated, tender, and unshakably human, even as secrets, suspicion, and danger press in from every side. Saab handles themes of justice, survival, and loyalty with nuance, weaving suspense, emotion, and history into every chapter.

The prose is elegant and immersive, the pacing sharp, and the twists—particularly around the sisters’ shared secret—had me breathless. This is not just a story of Hollywood glitz or postwar politics; it’s about the resilience of women who refuse to be silenced, no matter the cost.

A stunning, cinematic novel that feels both intimate and epic—The Star Society belongs on the shelf of every historical fiction lover.

World War II seems to be a recurring topic in my reading list right now. When I came across The Star Society I was delighted to see that this book also touched on life post WWII with a bonus that it was loosely based on Audrey Hepburn.

How could I not love a book that was inspired by the early life of Audrey Hepburn!

Glamour, secrets, and intrigue shine throughout The Star Society. It’s a richly atmospheric, fast-moving novel with a dual timeline that captures the glitz and glamour of old Hollywood alongside the dark days of the Dutch Resistance during the Nazi occupation. The story also vividly evokes the fear and paranoia of the post–World War II Communist witch hunts.

What I loved most, though, were the richly drawn characters—especially the two sisters at the heart of the story. Intelligent, strong, and brave, their relationship feels authentic and complex, with a powerful, unbreakable bond between them. They experienced some difficult times, and while reading I kept asking myself what I would do in the same situation.

Beautifully crafted and intelligently written, this novel is a true page-turner. Filled with secrets, danger, heartbreak, and love, all set against an immersive historical backdrop, The Star Society completely won me over. Finding some Easter eggs in the story relating to Audrey Hepburn made it even more enjoyable.

I read this as an audiobook, narrated by the immensely talented Saskia Maarvelend. Her skillful performance greatly enhanced the story.

The Star Society is a richly layered and deeply immersive historical novel that asks readers to slow down and fully settle into its world. This was very much a long-haul read for me—it took over a week to finish—not because it lagged, but because the story is so engrossing and dense with interconnected threads that I wanted to read it with care. Gabriella Saab weaves together Hollywood glamour, political tension, and the lingering trauma of World War II with impressive control, allowing each storyline to unfold naturally and with purpose.

At the center are Ada and Ingrid, two sisters trying to rebuild their lives in America after surviving unimaginable circumstances. I felt for both of them—their exhaustion, resilience, and quiet determination—as they navigated loyalty, secrecy, and the weight of their pasts. The multiple moving parts of the narrative are thoughtfully interwoven, creating a story that feels expansive yet emotionally grounded. This is a patient, rewarding historical novel that delivers depth, nuance, and a powerful exploration of survival and reinvention.

The Star Society was an intriguing historical fiction novel depicting the Dutch resistance and Hollywood in the ww2 and post ww2 eras, reminiscent of a Beatriz Williams novel. Truthfully I was hoping for more Hollywood chaos (beyond just the Red Scare focus, although that is also an important focus of course) and more about how Ada transitioned from her Dutch life to her Hollywood one. I enjoyed the Red Scare element of this novel, at times feeling alarmed by certain parallels between that period and the modern day political landscape. At times I found the pacing to be slower than I would have liked, but I am still giving this one 4 ⭐️ due to the writing quality and the fact that it may have been me rather than the book that was the issue (in reference to pacing, due to mindset I was in while listening).

🎧 the narrator did a beautiful job bringing this story to life, and I will definitely be on the lookout for more from her!

I love a historical fiction story with a twist, and this features twin sisters separated during WWII. Now adults, Ada is a rising star in Hollywood, and Ida works as a private investigator for the Red Scare, now tha fear of communism is rapidly spreading.

I enjoyed both the audio and print formats, but combined it was a treat for my ears and eyes. The combined glitz and glamour of that time, paired with the historical facts pulled me into the story.

An Audry Hepburn inspired Hitchchokian historical thriller? Yes, please! THE STAR SOCIETY is an unputdownable dual timeline story of sisterhood, love and how the past comes to haunt us in the most unexpected ways. This sweeping, deeply human, intricate story weaves the themes of loss, betrayal, deadly secrets and the beauty of love. It is an exploration of humanity at its worst and at its best. Saab's prose is deeply atmospheric, nuanced and devastatingly beautiful. While twists keep on coming--and some of them are heartbreaking--you'll fall in love with the sisters and cheer for them until the very last page. And, seriously, who doesn't like old Hollywood glamour even when it's overshadowed by the Red Scare? This book will hold you captive until the end. THE STAR SOCIETY is releasing on January 6, 2026. Pre-order now and start 2026 on the right note.

Twin sisters have to find a way to survive the Nazi occupation of their homeland, Netherlands, as well as their mother who has befriended a Gestapo agent. Ingrid flees with her future husband, Lars, to America and makes a new life always wondering what happened to her sister. She became a private investigator. Her sister works with the Resistance until she is arrested by her mother's friend. She flees in the middle of the night and ends up in Hollywood with a new name and identity. When Ingrid is sent on assignment to investigate Ada Worthington-Fox, she realizes that it is her sister. They get caught up in the whirlwind of the Red Scare in Hollywood. By the end, they work together to expose a corrupt FBI agent and find a way back to each other.
The sisters in this story are so strong and brave you can't help but admire them as you read about their journey. In the dual timeline of during the War and the years after, you are drawn into their world of chaos in the Netherlands and the bright lights of Hollywood. I loved how the author was inspired by the life of Audrey Hepburn and built and expanded that world into this story. Ingrid, her sister, and her husband had to flee their native land separately, assimilate into America and find a way to thrive without knowing what happened to the other for years. As they reconnected, they had to navigate their separation and rebuild their relationship. The first half of the book develops the characters and the plot, and the second half takes off with a lot going on. I read the second half in a day because I had to find out what happened next.
If you want a great historical fiction focused on the Cold War, I highly recommend this book. Don't get turned off by the WW2 link.

Ada Worthington-Fox is an actress and rising Hollywood star who has built a new life after escaping the Dutch Resistance and being imprisoned by the Gestapo. however, she is confronted by her past when her sister, Ingrid, whom she had believed to be dead, unexpectedly appears on her doorstep…

this novel is nothing short of captivating! from the plot to the characters, this novel is perfect for readers of historical fiction, romance, political spy thrillers, and family drama. there are so many themes woven within this book that kept me listening and i couldn’t get enough! Saskia Maarleveld is one of my favorite narrators and her narration beautifully captures the emotions and tension between Ada, her sister, and the various other characters within this book; she does a great job distinguishing between various ages and genders, thoughtful of accents and cadence appropriate for each scene.

this is such a a stunning and beautifully written story. i know about the history of old Hollywood and the Red Scare, including the trials, but i didn’t know that the plot of this book would include it. i was pleasantly surprised! i also had little knowledge about its characters, but from the first chapter i couldn’t help but notice Ada’s description and life experiences sounded a lot like Audrey Hepburn. after a quick internet search, it was confirmed that yes, some of Audrey’s biography inspired the author’s creation of Ada and her background. i love that the author note at the end dives a bit deeper into the way the story and characters were written. there’s a lot of history and real-life events that helped shape this novel!

i cannot recommend reading this enough when it’s released. if you can listen, the audiobook is amazing!

This was truly an unputdownable book - yet, it was so good I wanted to savor every page, so I forced myself to read it slowly. Simply, I didn’t want it to end.

When WWII breaks out in Europe and the Nazis raid The Netherlands, twins Ingrid and Aleida find themselves at a crossroads. Ingrid decides to risk it all to flee with her fiancée via the resistance and try to escape to America. Aleida, chooses to stay in Holland, Ingrid promises to write when she makes it safely, but a letter never came. Aleida lives under Nazi occupation secretly helping the Dutch Resistance- until her mother decides to start seeing a Nazi and he moves in - Aleida knows she must run. Fast forward to two years after the war, Aleida, now known as Hollywood’s most desired actress Ada Worthington-Fox, is making it big. Meanwhile, Ingrid has settled into her new life in America and works for the government in Washington DC - investigating Communist supporters. Her next assignment: Hollywood. Her target: Ada Worthington Fox - the sister she thought was dead.

There is so much more to this story then what I shared - so many twists and turns, and the book is so well-written and Ada and Ingrid’s story is told perfectly. The perfect mix of history, lies, betrayal, mystery, suspense, drama and excitement. 100% recommend this book to any historical fiction lover.

This book had me hooked for the first 40-50%. I always appreciate historical fiction that is educational and well-researched. I was unfamiliar with the connection between the "Red Scare" and Hollywood in the 40s, and learned a lot. The author's note helped me appreciate Saab's research and it was interesting to learn more about Audrey Hepburn's influence on the story. Unfortunately, once I read the author's note, I realized that most of what I enjoyed about the book was pulled directly from actual historical accounts and what I did not enjoy or appreciate as much were Saab's creative contributions and embellishments. I think the romantic elements were interesting at points but unnecessary overall and that some of the relationships were confusing. By the end, it felt more like a bad soap opera. However, I do think that it is worth the read predominantly for education on fascism in early 20th century Europe and the fear of communism in the US with a bit of entertainment.

I did immersive read because I love Saskia Maarleveld's voice and will listen to anything that she's narrating.

3/5 - I lovedddd the premise of this one, and after reading the author’s note I appreciated it much more! Loosely based on Audrey Hepburn’s life, combined with other 1940s big themes, this was a fascinating look into life during and after WWII in occupied Holland and the United States. Plus, the Hollywood component and post-war war on communism was so intriguing! I liked the main characters, but anticipated the twists and felt the pacing was a little slow. If you’re into historical fiction and old Hollywood I think you’ll love this!

Thank you to @netgalley for an ARC of this story in exchange for my honest review!

A beautifully crafted work of historical fiction, Gaab weaves a gripping dual narrative that spans espionage, survival, secrecy, sacrifice, and reinvention—moving from the harrowing shadows of the Dutch Resistance to the glittering glamour of Hollywood.

At its heart, this is a radiant story of sisterhood. These courageous heroines shine with resilience and strength, and while postwar narratives often carry profound heartbreak, I deeply appreciated the historical insight and the quiet empowerment found in honoring the bravery of these women.

What fascinated me most was the novel’s loose inspiration from Audrey Hepburn’s early life—portraying a rising star reckoning with a past shaped by resistance and survival. Whether read or listened to, the author’s note is essential, offering thoughtful context and deeper reflection that beautifully enriches the story.
