Rosie the Clydesdale horse and her cowgirl friend Oakley love living on the ranch—but that doesn’t mean it isn’t dangerous! When a pack of coyotes targets their herd of cattle, Rosie and Oakley have to work together—and fast!—to protect their beloved animal friends. This exciting picture book celebrates teamwork, friendship, and the courage of selfless love.
It’s a beautiful day at the ranch—cowgirl Oakley, Rosie the Clydesdale, and Pete the dog love playing with the new baby calves and laughing at their adorable milk mustaches. Even Thumbs the barn cat seems less grumpy than usual. But when a pack of coyotes closes in, it’s up to Rosie, Oakley, and their friends to save the baby calves and protect their home.
From children’s book author Paige Murray comes a Western adventure filled with friendship, bravery, and quick thinking—based on real animals from her own Texas ranch.
This picture book for ages 4–8:
Is an inspiring, animal-filled story of courage and friendshipFeatures beautiful, engaging artwork and photos of the real-life charactersIncludes fun ranch animal factsIs written by Paige Murray, author of Rosie’s Wild Ride and wife of nine-time World Champion Cowboy Ty Murray
Delightful and engaging. Rosie is a lovely Clydesdale and Oakley is a very young cowgirl. They spend a great deal of time together, and with the pets and farm animals. Rosie and Oakley plus the cat and dog have quite an adventure when a pack of coyotes threatens the newborn calves. Awesome illustrations and story. I hope this becomes a series. Highly recommend.
I was blessed with an ARC. Thank you, NetGalley. The opinions expressed are my own.
What an absolute delight! Rosie’s Ranch Rescue: Taking Care of Each Other by Paige Murray is the kind of children’s book that fills your heart right up. Rosie the Clydesdale and her fearless cowgirl best friend Oakley are pure sunshine, showing little readers that courage, compassion, and teamwork can make even the wildest challenges feel conquerable.
The story is both exciting and tender, with coyotes threatening their peaceful ranch and a brave team of animals working together to protect their family. The message of love, kindness, and looking out for one another shines beautifully through every page.
The illustrations are stunning, full of warmth, color, and heart, and the photos of the real Rosie and her ranch friends make it even more special. Paige Murray captures the spirit of the West with such authenticity and heart that you can practically smell the hay and hear the hoofbeats.
This is a must-have for every little animal lover’s bookshelf! It's a tale that reminds us that family isn’t just who we’re born to, but who we choose to care for.
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free Kindle book. My review is voluntarily given, and my opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed this book, especially having growing up on a dairy farm (not a ranch, though). Sadly, we didn't have horses. I kept thinking the entire time I was reading this book, where are her books? Is this child running the ranch by herself? Going off in the middle of the night after the coyotes by herself? No, her parents were just looking for her the whole time. Kids.
Love how the book took the time to explain all the animals are just taking care of their own families. Disney would never.
Rosie’s Ranch Rescue was simply a delight. As a child, I loved horses. I still do and this book was so precious. Paige Murray pulled this story from true events on their farm. Kristen Humphrey made the animals come alive with her illustrations. Any child would enjoy this book. It would be a charming Christmas present 😉
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The opinions expressed are completely my own.
I am reviewing a digital ARC I received via NetGalley.
In Rosie's Ranch Rescue, Paige Murray tells an exciting story that skillfully balances the realism of ranch life with a little picture book charm to create a story that is believable while imbuing the cast of characters, both animal and human, with a lot of personality. When a pack of coyotes threaten to hunt a group of newly-born calves on the ranch, the titular Rosie (the Clydesdale horse) and her young rider, Oakley, together with some other helpful members of the ranch (a cat, a dog, and the ranch's guard donkey) must think and act quickly to protect them.
I have read several horse-related picture book stories that are inspired by the author's real ranch or farm, and this is one of the best I have read. I loved the ways in which Oakley and the animals worked together in ways that felt true to each character's unique strengths. The illustration style is very well suited to the subject matter; it maintains an overall sense of realism but with enough style to make Rosie the large draft horse feel very strong and powerful, the pack of coyotes very stealthy and ominous, etc.
Another standout aspect of the narrative is the way in which the coyotes' hunt for the calves is framed. Once the calves have been saved, Oakley expresses her anger towards the coyotes to her dad, who reminds her that they are simply trying to feed and protect their own family, in the same way that Oakley is trying to care for and protect hers. At the end, when all is calm again, we even see the coyotes snuggled up with their young in their burrow, much like the cows and their calves. This true-to-nature aspect respects children's ability to understand some of the realities of the natural world in an age-appropriate way.
I would recommend this book to just about any children's library collection!
Rosie's Ranch is a beautifully illustrated story following a little girl and her animal friends as they defend the farm from wild predators. I was pulled into this book immediately from the gorgeous illustrations, and they don't disappoint throughout the book.
What I Liked: I thought it was very cool that the author is married to a world champion cowboy and that definitely gives the story credibility. The story is based on a real experience on the farm which was also cool to learn. I really appreciated the lessons in the book. The author brings up a great quote about bravery and teaches about predators in a way kids can understand.
What Parents Should Know: The story does mention an animal potentially being eaten and the realities of wild predators so this book may not be for the faint of heart. It does open the way for some good conversations about the cycle of life if they haven't been had already. This book might also be better read after reading the first book. I've only read this book. A few of the animals were named like I should have already known who they were.
I would recommend this book 100% for families who love farm life, horses, outdoor adventures and wonderful lessons along the way.
A decently-produced slice of life from the ranch, for any young cowgirls out there. The cows have calved, and the peace of the place is about to be shattered one night, by something that is spooking all the animals. It's clearly the coyote we saw earlier, right? Well, perhaps not, as there's a small list of critters we're concerned with here. Prime amongst those is our girl Oakley, but there is Rosie the horse, Pete the dog and even the cat (called Thumbs, of course) – and they all have to get along and do the right thing at the right time to save the day. In the finish it's the horse who does a lot of the good deeds, but like I say this is for cowgirls with some experience of the farm workings and animals.
That's not to say no other girl will enjoy this – the visual craft is really quite strong, the animals are not too cute but still very likeable and characterful, and the message of teamwork and building of family spirit is nicely done. But yes, it will be the girl with saddle experience who will enjoy this the most – and give it a strong four stars at least. Teachers will give a mental thumbs-up to the nature notes we close with, further evidence of this being well-made.
Oakley is eager to ride her Clydesdale, Rosie, to see the new calves born on the ranch. Her dog, Pete, and Thumbs the cat join them. All seems well until... nighttime, when Rosie and Lola the donkey hear the howling of coyotes nearby. Oakley and her friends must save the calves before it's too late.
Rosie's Ranch Rescue: Taking Care of Each Other by Paige Murray is an adorable story filled with delightful, unique characters wrapped around a wonderful message about caring for one another. The author captures the considerate and brave Rosie, the grumpy and full-of-himself Thumbs, the playfulness and courage of Pete, and the wide-eyed wonder and determination of Oakley.
Kristen Humphrey provides the artwork for Rosie's Ranch Rescue, filling the pages with puffy green trees and rolling hills, skies of pink, purple, and various shades of blue, and bringing forth the mannerisms of every character down to the surprised yellow-eyed armadillo.
Rosie's Ranch Rescue is geared toward readers 4 to 8, and would be enjoyed by youngsters who like nature, animals, ranch life, and delightful adventures.
Rosie’s Ranch Rescue offers a heartfelt and authentic glimpse into ranch life, beautifully captured through both narrative and illustration. Paige Murray presents meaningful and engaging conversations between Oakley and her parents that subtly introduce young readers to animal behavior and responsibility in a way that feels both educational and emotionally resonant.
Kristen Humphrey’s illustrations are vibrant and expressive, perfectly complementing the story and adding visual depth that will captivate young audiences. The contrast in size between Rosie and Oakley is especially charming, creating an endearing dynamic that children are sure to love.
Given the suspenseful storyline and the book’s length, I would recommend it for children at the upper end of the intended age range (4–8 years), as they are more likely to appreciate the pacing and emotional nuance. The inclusion of a quote from John Wayne serves as an inspiring moral compass for the story and adds a thoughtful layer that parents will also find meaningful.

This book was the CUTEST thing!!! I’m so excited to review this story, because, honestly, I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed a picture book this much. It was my ideal story for children– full of beautiful illustrations and a wonderful little tale inside. l honestly thought this was such a sweet little story. It’s exactly the type of book I would want to keep for when I’m a parent to read to my little ones– and exactly the type of story I would have loved around six years old. The characters were great. I loved seeing the various animals around the farm– and they were so adorable! I also really loved the cowgirl aesthetic of the story, and how the family came together. I would definitely recommend this to any families with young children who would enjoy a fun picture book about a cowgirl harnessing her bravery to save the animals.
EMOJI REVIEW! 🧸 sweet little picture book 🤠 cowgirl learning bravery 🐎 loveable animal characters 🐮 adorable baby calves!!! 😍 super adorable drawings
Rosie’s Ranch Rescue is an exciting children’s adventure story centering on a young cowgirl (Oakley) and her beloved Clydesdale, Rosie. As a threat arises from various wild animals, Oakley, Rosie, and the other farm animals discover the importance of working together. They also learn that there it is often necessary to look at things from different perspectives.
The variety of animals in the story adds to the enjoyment. The grouchy barn cat, Thumbs, who is fainthearted, tired, and a bit grouchy, adds a fun level of levity and made me laugh.
This book is just as enjoyable as the first in the series, with interesting characters, great pacing, engaging illustrations, and a satisfying ending. It’s a great choice for animal-loving young readers.
First Line: There was no trouble on the glorious day on the ranch—yet. Series: Rosie the Horse, book 2 Genre: Children Author: Paige Murray Page Count: 32 Reading Age: 4-8

This book is so awesome! For all of those kids out there that are totally horse-obsessed, this book is perfect in every way. Rosie the Clydesdale is drawn beautifully and even has some personality to her that is conveyed visually. It is so impressive that the illustrator managed to achieve this because Rosie is a character that doesn't have dialogue but is a key part of this story. As for the writing, it was great! The author did a fantastic job of building suspense and excitement within the plot, making for a highly engaging and entertaining story. Lastly, the amount of detail in both the illustrations and the writing was so impressive! It's clear that the creators of this book care deeply about what they do, and they definitely put a lot of time and effort into making this perfect-in-every-way book. Bravo!!!
In this adventure story, a little girl and her Clydesdale horse work together to rescue some baby calves from coyotes. The story is action-packed without being too scary, and kids will enjoy the wish fulfillment aspect of a kid and her horse saving the day.
Parents who are concerned about this story happening apart from adult supervision should know that the parents in the story gently correct their daughter at the end, praising her for her bravery while also telling her to come get them in the future. So, this book doesn't actually teach kids to go out alone on dangerous nighttime missions!
This picture book will appeal to kids who like stories about horses and ranch life. It offers positive messages and action-packed excitement, and the setting has a sense of authenticity that will please adults, since the author based aspects of this story on her own Texas ranch.
I received a temporary digital copy from NetGalley, and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
Rating: 4.5 rounded up to 5 -Positive Content- ▪️ I was pleased to see there was a traditional family in this book.
▪️The book was well-illustrated.
-Reading Level- ▪️ Slightly advanced
-Other-
About a girl in the book there was a sentence that read, "She was so excited to see the baby calves that she ate her breakfast without giving Mama any trouble."
The sentence is not outright bad in itself, but the last part seemed to hint that she usually gave her Mama trouble which may (unintentionally) give off a negative attitude to kids reading it. Other than this the rest of the book was pretty good.
Many thanks to Zonderkidz Books for the complimentary e-book copy I received to review through Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review, and the thoughts above are my own.
Rosie's Ranch Rescue by Paige Murray follows Oakley and her beloved horse Rosie along with their gang of animal friends on a mission to protect the newborn calves on her family's ranch.
This book was an absolute delight from beginning end! It's gang of characters: Oakley the curious girl with a big heart, Rosie her wise horse, Pete the ranch dog, and grouchy ol' Thumbs the cat, kept me laughing and rooting for them until the very end. I appreciated the empowering way that Rosie's Ranch Rescue tackled the subject of predators on the ranch, and loved the extra facts about animals on the ranch in the back of the book.
The onomatopoeias sprinkled throughout the book are a sure fire read aloud hit, along with the beautiful illustrations it's hard to go wrong!
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the free ebook ARC. My review is not required to be positive, and all opinions are my own.
Our little man was SO excited to have another Rosie book!
We love the tender but tough Clydesdale named Rosie and the bond between Rosie and her favorite girl, Oakley. On this adventure, my son loved the tension caused by those pesky coyotes and the courage of Rosie, Oakley, and their crew. He literally loved this book from front to back, including the cute maps on the i side of the covers. I loved the lesson of protecting those we love from danger and being courageous even though we are scared. Rosie's Ranch Rescue is another sweet book with good moral lessons and encouragement for our little ones as they grow. We are so happy to add it to our book shelf, and would recommend it to anyone with animal or cowgirl/cowboy loving kiddos!
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations of a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Rosie's Ranch Rescue is another wonderfully written book about being brave, even when you don't feel like it. Oakley and her horse, Rosie, help fight off coyotes that are threatening the ranch animals. Even Thumbs, the cat, gets in on the action.
It's a story of adventure, family, courage, and empathy. Oakley shows how family works together. The illustrations are well-drawn, and the color is bright, conveying a lot of emotion. The illustrations complement the easy-to-read storyline well.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher; a positive review is not required. All opinions are my own.
Packed with adventure, Rosie’s Ranch Rescue takes young readers on a mission to save the ranch’s baby calves. Along the way, cowgirl Oakley and her animal friends must be bold, courageous, and work together as a team to chase off a wild boar and a pack of coyotes. Bright, action-packed illustrations perfectly fit this story that has just the right amount of thrills for little ones—without being scary. A sweet peek into ranch life and the beauty of friendship.

Like Stitch said 'Ohana means family. Family means no one gets left behind' 🥹The ranch just got some adorable new calves and Rosie the horse, her human bestie Oakley, their ranch dog and one grumpy cat set off to protect the lil ones from danger.
I laughed my ass off at the cat scared one sec brave the next 😂 And honestly Oakley’s lasso skills at that age? Mad impressive. YEE HAW! This short story hits you with a sweet moral too family protects each other, always 💛
This is my honest opinion for the ARC I received. Thanks author and NetGalley for the opportunity!
With action, humor and good old fashion courage, Rosie is off on another adventure. Protecting her family's animals on the ranch.
Sensing danger, she and her animal friends set out to stop the coyotes from attaching their newborn calf. My heart was actually pounding with all the drama however, it was eased with the humor of their shenanigans'. Highly recommend to read with your kiddos.
A special thank you to Zonderkiz and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
I really love the illustrations in these books. They are my favorite parts and the story is lovely as well. I believe Rosie is the horse and the other is the little girl. I may have that backwards, but it is what it is. They go about saving the newborn calves from the different things that go bump in the night. They get a little bit of trouble for being out of bed after dark, but it was all worth it to save the baby calves in the end. These books are heartwarming and a joy for many readers.
What a pleasure to read this book! These farm animals make a great team and they are a good exmple of cooperation! I especially appreciated that the none of the animals in the story are protrayed as bad or evil. Rather the author takes the time to explain that all animals are trying to survive. Any parent with a burgeoning farmer needs to get Rosie's Ranch Rescue!
My niece begged me to request this book as soon as she saw the cover and I read the description to her. It was a great pre-bedtime story with adventures of different animals encountered in the wilderness. A fun story for all ages with gorgeous illustrations to bring the characters to life!
Gentle charm fills every chapter, offering a story that feels both comforting and encouraging. The focus on kindness and community adds a lovely glow that makes the read quietly rewarding.
This picture book series is quite fun to read and has such a lovely back story since they are grounded in experiences that the author or her daughter had. The artwork is well done with tons of detail. I do find that the story was a bit choppy especially at the start, but that may just be because I'm not the target audience. And I did question the fact that a little girl was able to do all this without her parents being aware especially at night. There are some good lessons in the book, although the focus was really on the two main characters working together again and overcoming obstacles to protect the farm. So it was less about learning than about accomplishing.
While part of a series, there is no need to have read the first book. It will help to position the relationship between Rosie and Oakley more since this book starts with them as friends and co-defenders of the farm. But that isn't necessary to understand the friendship between these characters and their desire for adventures.
As with the first book, I would recommend it as a read aloud or bedtime book. And definitely a great gift.
