This is another pick from the Gutenberg library and it's a surprisingly good read.

The writing is easy to read and doesn't feel old considering it was published in 1902. I learnt a fair bit, especially about the slave trade which I found fascinating and should read more about. Some of the details were eye opening to say the least.

Other sections I found interesting were the tales of colonisation using flatboats and the history of privateers. I didn't enjoy reading about whaling however and I found some sections dealing with commerce a bit dry but overall the book was a solid read with half to two thirds of the book was very good.
