I like this book because he loses his antlers. His antlers are so true to him, and he's afraid they'll fall off, and he'll never have antlers again. Like, totally never again.

A good friend from Maine sent this when my kid was born, along with a stuffed moose. Kid is now 16 months. This is the only book longer than Moo, Baa, La La La that she pulls off the shelf and then listens to. Maybe it’s the stuffed moose she gets to hold as we read, or maybe it’s the different voices I assign to the characters. Whatever the reason, it’s her favorite big-kid book. My only gripe is that all (three) of the characters are male. I get that the moose have to be male bc of the antlers. When I’m reading, I just change the owl’s pronouns to she/her.

A young moose discovers that his antlers are getting loose, although he has been taking very good care of them. He tries hard to keep them but they fall off anyway. He is dismayed and distraught until an older moose explains to him they are supposed to fall off for the winter. In the back of the book are interesting questions and answers about antlers. Amusing illustrations.

Cute and rhyming, as Orville Anderson Tarkington Moose begins wondering why on earth his antlers are loose. My favorite bit of this one is that the owl he goes to for advice quite wisely tells Orville that his antlers are screwed in, duh, and he just needs to tighten them up. (Frances Bloxam, fighting animal stereotypes!)

My boys loved this rhyming book about Orville Anderson Tarkington Moose who awoke one bright morning to find his antlers were loose. He "polished them daily and kept them quite strong. Now, what in the world do you think has gone wrong?"

At the end of the book there's questions and answers about antlers. And, I admit, I did not know that antlers fell off every year!
