When I was younger I watched a tv series, Jack the Ripper with Michael Caine (yes you are doing his accent aren't you!?) I was gripped, the dirty and quite frankly eerie streets of Whitechapel in London along with the scary true story of this monster was gripping viewing for my teenage self.

So when the chance to review Shadows Fall Away came up I very excitedly signed up, the story of a young man out of time makes for a really good read.

This is going to be a quick review as books like this need

It's no secret-- I love reading about serial killers, especially Jack the Ripper. I love the conspiracy shows that try to figure out the murderer using modern forensics. They are all intriguing, yet I have to say, I think I like Ms. Forbes' take the best. Can't tell you, read it for yourself.

The story is told in first person from several different POVs. While I liked having the different viewpoints, it was a tad overdone in

'Shadows Fall Away' is a gripping and imaginative young adult novel that mixes time travel, historical fiction, and mystery to keep readers on the edge of their seats. Our main character, Mark, isn't making the best decisions in life and keeps getting in trouble. With no other options, his parents send him to live with his weird aunt in London. Mark's aunt has a strange obsession with all things Jack the Ripper, so he gets a crash course on the infamous murderer. When Mark gets struck by ...more

My Review:
The story of Jack the Ripper has been one that always intrigued me. I have read all the reports and seen all the movies on it. I am not sure why I find it so interesting but when I saw the synopsis for this book I knew I had to read it. I think Kit did an amazing job, you really felt how life was in 1888 London and she kept with the real story just added her own spin to it. I didn't mind the POV that were told by Mark, Genie and Aunt Agatha but sometimes it got me a bit confused but

I never used to like historical fiction because I never used to care much about history. But as I've gotten older, I've really started to enjoy it more. Especially when it's centered around something like the Jack the Ripper murders. I mean, there are so many takes on Jack the Ripper. Like The Last Sherlock Holmes Story. But I've never read one quite like Shadows Fall

This was a terribly interesting read. I love Mark, and quite enjoyed getting to know Genie as well. And the concept of unexpectedly time-traveling back to the middle of Jack the Rippers murder spree was quite a bit of fun.

Before I started reading, I was concerned that this would present itself as a classic example of a plot that

Shadows Fall Away by Kit Forbes is a YA historical fiction/time travel novel that takes place in London's seedy East End during the time of Jack the Ripper. Mark Stewart, the book's protagonist, is more of an anti-hero. Brushes with the law have finally caught up to him and he's on a summer time-out with his Aunt Agatha in London. But when Mark is mysteriously struck by lightning, he's whisked away to the past. With no money and barely any contacts, Mark has to fend for himself on the mean ...more

I received a free copy of Shadows Fall Away.

I really enjoyed this book. The story was different from any I had read before and I will admit, I was a little worried at the beginning, but this book quickly eased my worries and I found it very hard to put down. The writing was good, although my copy was uncorrected and I found a few grammatical errors that I'm sure will be fixed when the book goes to print. I was a little bored at the beginning, but only through the first 15% or so and perhaps that

This is an easy quick read with good writing and a fair editing job. I like the premis and how it was handled. The delivery is well done but the pacing is a bit slow at the start. There is a rushed feel to certain elements and unanswered bits at the conclusion. The characters are nicely fleshed out which is a big plus in my book. Overall this is a good read with potential from the author. I received an evaluation copy through Chapter by Chapter in exchange for my honest opinion

I got to read an early draft of this book and all I can say is WOW! Kit's writing easily lets you fall into the time period and I LOVE both her MCs (Mark is kind of snarky and you'll fall for him and Genie is ahead of her time). There is action, adventure, romance, all the goods for a great story.
