I haven't read this book yet, but I want to. My grandpa wrote it.

This short work is filled with biblical wisdom about what it means to be an elder. My only criticism is that he takes the two-office view. Pastors share many characteristics and qualifications as elders, but they are a distinct office.

Easy to read, this volume is full of biblical wisdom on the office of Elder. I would gladly put this in the hands of every man aspiring to the Eldership. Eyres advances a two-office view.

Excellent. So helpful. It was written in 1975, and written for a Presbyterian context, and yet I found myself thinking time and again "this could have been written for our own church and leadership". It is very suitable as a primer in leadership for incoming elders or those "in training" for eldership ; and it also deserves re-reading periodically to refresh our minds and remind elders of their responsibilities and high calling to be faithful and Christ-like undershepherds of the flock that God has entrusted to their care and oversight. Very warmly recommended.

An excellent short book full of wisdom and ideal for group study since it has relevant, thoughtful questions at the end of each chapter. Very challenging, very convicting. Covers calling, qualification, training, and function of the elder. Written from a Presbyterian perspective, but applicable in all churches, and to all its members, not just church leaders. Has a good balance of biblical, theological, and practical discussion. There is a lot of wisdom packed into these few pages, well worth the hour or two it may take to read. Highly recommended.

My favorite kind of book; short, but precise and to the point without much puffery. It also seems to any other book on the subject quotes Mr. Eyres in some fashion or another.
