Kieran is trying to solve a case that is 10 years old. He doesn't like the way it seemed to be covered up and can't let it go even when told by his superiors. Not even when things start to get dangerous. Even his friends think he has an unhealthy obsession. I enjoyed following along as Kieran put the pieces together with the help of a determined reporter and a sweet bomb-sniffing dog named Georgia. Enjoyable police procedural/ thriller. I've read the first in this series but not the others. They stand alone, though they share some characters.

Considering the current state of hysteria over terrorism, Blast from the Past, reads more like a creative non-fiction piece than pure fiction. It is a timely story, much of which is not unlike the indepth reporting of a seasoned reporter's chronicle of a tragedy in the sky. Fishman is a master story-teller in this piece that reveals the insides of bomb investigatons through the dogged perseverance of a seasoned NY PD detective, Kieran Lehane, and his Labrador Explosive Detection Canine, Georgia. This is a wild, fast-paced tale with a winding plot that makes it a definite page- turner.

That’s the daunting case that awaits Senior Bomb Squad Detective Kieran Lehane, the man who makes the squad tick in “Blast from the Past.” In the fourth installment of the gritty “Bomb Squad NYC” book series, NYPD Bomb Squad Detective/Dog Handler Kieran Lehane and his loyal and stalwart EDC (Explosive Detection Canine) “Georgia” are in for the most daring and dangerous case of their lives.
With the tenth anniversary of the tragic and explosive loss of Triangle Flight 699 looming on the horizon, Detective Lehane and Georgia are working security for a very public hearing commemorating the tenth anniversary just seven days away. While attending an NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) hearing, Detective Lehane is thrust into action when Georgia unexpectedly alerts to the presence of explosives on the clothing of a suspicious man nicknamed “Bandana Man.” After a dogged pursuit by Lehane and Georgia through the city, they’re left with no suspect in custody, just a piece of evidence that could point to the cause of Triangle Flight 699’s demise, or lead to an even more chilling revelation; an imminent terrorist plot to blow another airliner out of the sky.
Desperate for answers, Detective Lehane reopens what was supposed to be a cold case initially declared an accident by the authorities. With no support from his boss, Lt. Capobianco, who urges his best bomb tech to drop it before he gets in over his head, pressure mounts on Kieran as shadow government agents target his Long Island home and threaten retribution. The decade’s long cold case suddenly turns red hot. Detective Lehane enlists the aid of a spunky investigative reporter for help. Following the clues with his canine partner right by his side, the trail leads the persistent trio to a dark and foreboding place. A disturbing U.S. Military conspiracy threatens not only Detective Lehane’s life and career but the lives of hundreds of innocent people who will be boarding the next Trans-Atlantic flight out of New York’s JFK.
I found this segment to be the most intense, suspenseful and fast-paced case of the “Bomb Squad NYC” book series. J.E. Fishman does a great job giving his cast of true-to-life characters depth and intriguing personalities. I especially enjoyed the subplot of NYPD EDC Georgia’s dogged determination to catch a nefarious adversary and help Master Bomb Technician Detective Kieran Lehane defuse a lethal terrorist plot ten years in the making. After reading the first four books in this explosively-entertaining book series, my reader’s curiosity is ready to respond to the next incident “Bottle Rocket” with hopefully many more to follow from the creative mind of J.E. Fishman!
