I want to start off by saying that I did not read book one in this series, so there were a few things that I didn't quite understand at first - and, of course, there's a previous part to the story that I'm not aware of. BUT the author does a great job answering questions and giving pieces of information throughout the story that cleared up a lot of those confusions. I do plan, however, to go back and read the first book, and to go on and read the third book when it's published.

I really got into this story. It's interesting, different, and eye-opening. The adventure is exciting, and sometimes even scary, as she tries to keep herself, her friends, and her mother safe, all while trying to figure things out.

I like Cora and Finn, and the fact that it's written from the point of view of each (if you're not a fan of the pov change, I do want to point out that it does happen at chapter breaks and not just randomly). In fact, because of the way it's written, more information is able to be given to the reader, you're able to see the good and bad in both of them, and it brings you closer to both characters. The side characters are great, as well. You can tell that the author really wanted each character to be a complete person, and I enjoyed getting to know each one of them, and seeing how they effect the adventure as it unfolds.

Cora has a lot of stuff going on inside of her, especially after the death of her father, which we hear about in the first few pages, and I can only assume happens at the end of the previous book. Having lost my father when I was a teenager, a lot of the things she says about her dad really hit home, as well as some of the things she says about herself personally. I have said before that words in books often times do more than just relate the story - sometimes touching our souls in ways that the author never expected. This, for me, is one of those books.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. Please remember that this review is my opinion based on my personal impressions of the book.

Deviate got it's hooks in me and reeled me right in.

Cora and the other Scintilla are running for their lives. Their rare spirits, auras, is what the Arrazi crave most, but there is another sinister threat looming; an organization called the Society.

Every where the Scintilla turn death, mayhem, heartache and terrible loss follow. When nothing and nowhere is safe, where do you turn? For Cora, the course is simple; knowledge is the key to saving everyone she loves. Can she uncover the secrets before all is lost? You'll have to read The Light Key Trilogy and find out.

Clark’s writing is incredibly imaginative with mystery upon mystery to unravel. She takes historical events and people and expertly twists them into this captivating, riveting, amazing story; twists that rival the Di Vinci Code.

There are romantic entanglements that rivalry even goes deeper than the feud between the Capulet’s and Montague’s.

The conflict is escalating, the very world is on the brink of devastation and Clark makes you feel like you are a part of it all.

I highly recommend this gripping Young Adult Urban Fantasy.

*My Thoughts*

Deviate is the second installment in Tracy Clark's The Light Key Trilogy. The trilogy features 17-year old Cora Sandoval as the main protagonist. If you have read Scintillate, or read my review, you know that a whole lot of pain, suffering, and heartbreak found their way into Cora's otherwise quiet life. She's found out that she is a rare human called Scintilla, and discovered that she wasn't truly alone just yet. She also discovered that another race called the Arrazi are itching to wipe out the last remaining Scintilla from the Earth.

WOW! This book had me on the edge of my seat and I kept worrying about Cora's welfare. Will she survive or will her enemies finally be victorious. There's plenty of drama and heartbreak, although my romantic heart hopes that Cora and Finn can be together in the end. Will it happen? Who knows. You'll have to read book three to find out. ;)

This book has done it. It broke the rule of "sequels are never better". Because this book was incredibly excellent.

First, Tracy switches to dual POV between Cora and Finn. I so love getting to see inside Finn's head, especially after book 1's huge reveal at the end. He's so charming externally, but it's interesting to see how he is reacting inside to everything that is going on, especially with Cora and Giovanni, and others.

I cannot get over how many twists and turns are in this novel. I'm still sitting here in shock because I don't know what to make of everything. I never suspected really anything that happened, which was such a breath of fresh air. Usually, I can guess what will happen ten pages from where I am. Not with Deviate. I was guessing until the end.

I love love love the character build-up and development through this book. I think Tracy did an excellent job in the first, but she delves deeper in this one and really brings these characters to life. They become more realistic and react even better to everything.

The plot of this book is great. It runs through Cora, still trying to deal with the events of the first book and still running from the Arrazi, and her trusty bunch of friends and family. They stick together and find the Arrazi more than they'd like to, but they end up finding a sanctuary in an unlikely place, where Cora tries to figure out how the Scintilla and Arrazi fit in the world. Does that not entice you to no ends? And trust me, Tracy executes it even better.

Giovanni and Finn are ever so perfect and I cannot figure out who I like Cora with more. Obviously I love Finn, but G is always there for her. I suppose I like him more as a flirty best friend.

I've hit the rambling phase of my review, so I'll wrap up with this: This book is even better than the first and I think I might die having to wait until October for Illuminate.

Lots of crazy stuff going on in this one. The love triangle exists - and it isn't as bad as some of them are - I understand this one at least. We have good guys turning bad, and bad guys turning good, and I'm pissed because people die (no way am I going to tell you who). There was almost too much going on at times. Lots of new characters and I had a small problem keeping them all separate (partly because I was trying to see what happened next and flew through the book).

One of the great mysteries will be revealed and it's a bit of a doozy. I didn't quite see it coming, at least not all the way. I think the highlight of the story was all the secrets and mysteries that were revealed. There are a couple big ones that shocked the heck out of me that I didn't see coming at all.

MS. Clark has constructed a fast-paced, intense follow-up novel to "Scintillate" that keeps you turning the pages. Her main character, Cora Sandoval is engaging and as a reader, I found myself going through every up and down as this story unwinds through the highs and lows of her quest to learn the truth about her kind. It has set up the third book well and now I can't wait for it to come out.

I'm going to open with a very bold statement: I think Deviate was even better than Scintillate! And you'll remember that I did enjoy Scintillate very much. A lot of times, the middle book in a trilogy can feel a bit flat, like it's only there to set up the grand finale. But not Deviate! Deviate definitely has it's own plot and excitement, and the reader gets to know all of the characters better.

In Deviate, Cora and her friends and family go on the offensive against the Arrazi. Cora is determined to not spend her life hiding, and she can't stand the thought of sitting idly by while Arrazi roam the world, killing innocent people. Cora, Giovanni, and Grace know that they're special; do they hold the key to taking down the Arrazi once and for all? With the help of friends, they seek answers no matter the cost.

Among many things that I loved about Deviate, the setting definitely stands out. This entire book takes place in Ireland! I could hear the Irish lilt in all the conversations. I loved it! Every time Finn interjected a "fookin,'" I smiled involuntarily. A hottie with an Irish accent? Sign me up!

Speaking of Finn, in Deviate he gets his own point of view. The chapters loosely alternate between Cora's point of view and Finn's. This way the reader gets to follow the action of both the scintillates and the Arrazi. This is something I love about YA lit: the lines between the "bad guys" and the "good guys" starts to get blurry sometimes. Through Finn's eyes, we see him struggle with his identity. The author does a great job with his voice; his actions are never sugarcoated, but yet I was somehow left feeling some compassion for him. And it wasn't just because of his presumably adorable accent; he feels very real. A teenage boy coming into his own, and having to struggle with right and wrong.

The third point of the love triangle is more fully developed in this book too. I'm still not sure how to feel about Giovanni. Like Finn, Tracy Clark does an excellent job in keeping him real. We only see him through Cora's eyes, and I'm left a bit conflicted about him. Yes, he's a hot Italian scintillate who's trying to help Cora, but there are some things revealed about his past in this book that gave me pause. I'll be going into the third book without picking "Team Finn" or "Team Giovanni."

Fascinating love triangles aside, the true gem at the heart of this book is the plot. It feels much deeper in this book, of course. The reader is right alongside the characters as they learn more and more about themselves and the world of scintillates and Arrazi. I thought the action was a little more intense--maybe because I know Cora better and care about her more? I absolutely love seeing her grow so much. She went from being a timid, overprotected girl at the beginning of Scintillate to a very confident young lady who wears a slightly risky dress to a masked ball all by herself in Deviate. She is fiercely loyal to her friends and family, and my heart broke for her whenever the danger hit too close to home. Isn't that the mark of a great novel? I was able to feel Cora's confusion; her love for her friends; her fear; her bravery.

I love that there was a definite story in Deviate, with all the build-up and then resolution you would want in a standalone. Yet, there was deep character development, building off of the first book's introductions, and a hint at the end of what will come in the third and final novel. I know that I'm hooked and ready for the third novel!

I have really mixed opinions on this book. I think that this is a truly magic concept, with a writing style that it so vivid and beautiful; yet the pacing was killing me. I loved everything about the book apart from the pacing and the characters (although they did improve greatly, so much that I’ve grown to love some of them). The dual POV was a little confusing at times, but the main thing that I think needs improving is the pacing. Apart from that I really enjoyed the book.

My favourite aspect of the book was the writing style. I feel like I can’t justify my love for the way Tracy Clark writes - she is so talented, and even though I didn’t give this book a very high rating, I know I will be picking up other things she writes because I just love her style. The concept was also very unique and original. I have never read anything like it - these days, many authors make it seem difficult to come up with original concepts (we’ve all read hundreds of books where the protagonist can do magic, or where the world is split into 2), but Tracy Clark makes me realise that YA fantasy/paranormal is not dry, and I definitely commend her on that.

My main problem with this book was the pacing. It started off strong, with new things happening and a few new characters being introduced, but it was just a downward slide from there. In the middle of the book, nothing was happening - there was no goal that was going to be achieved / have progress made towards in the foreseeable future, and nothing was happening. At times, there was a massive info-dump, which made it just boring. At least in the end something interesting was happening, but for me, it was too little too late.

Another thing that I really enjoyed was the characters. Cora was still a little irritating, but she changed into a much stronger person over the course of the book. She developed into a much more determined person, and although she moped around a bit at the beginning, this soon changed and she rarely complained towards the end.

Also, Cora didn’t just abandon her best friends (which happens a lot!). They had a big part in the book which I really enjoyed because it added a new layer to her character. Mari and Dun (Cora’s best friends) were some of my favourite characters so I was really pleased when they featured in the majority of the book.

Surprisingly, there wasn’t much romance in this book. I was really pleased because I found the romance in the previous book, Scintillate, a bit cringey. As you will know from the last book, Cora and Finn weren’t together (which I was super happy about because I hate them together), so Cora had the chance to rely on herself and be much more independent. I enjoyed the mystery aspects more than the coming-of-age parts too because it was much more exciting.

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but found it to drag incredibly. The concept of the book was fantastic, but the pacing killed me so I can’t give it a very high rating. The world-building was done in too much info-dumps, and there was no climax. While reading it, I could really tell that it was the 2nd book in the series, and suffered from second-book-syndrome. I think I will pick up the next book, just because I like the writing style so much. Hopefully the pacing will be better!

This series is kind of different. I really enjoy it and I'm fascinated by the concept. This book definitely stands out today in a sea of sci-fi, fantasy, dystopian, and contemporary young adult books. This one is paranormal and that's just not a huge trend at the moment so it's kind of nice to have fresh ideas in the sub-genre. I would recommend this to fans of The Archived by Victoria Schwab or The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. It would be a perfect read for the fall, which is why it's a bit puzzling that each book has been released in March. It doesn't really have anything to do with the seasons but I just find more people are into paranormal type books in the fall leading up to Halloween. It's still good no matter when you read it though.

This second installment in the Light Key trilogy was very intriguing. It held my attention and had me at the edge of my seat several times. There are some new characters that add a lot to the story. I enjoyed the dual perspectives with Finn and Cora. It adds so much to see the opposite ends of the spectrum with those 2 characters and the struggles that each of them have because of who they are. We do get a bunch of answers in this book but there are still a couple of mysteries saved for book 3. I kind of wish this was just a duology though. This book could have been cut down a little bit to accommodate those last couple mysteries. There were a couple times in this book that dragged along for a short while because it felt like nothing was happening or they were talking in circles. I personally have no interest in Dante or his works and this book had a lot of references to that. The thing that is fun with referencing a classic is it makes it feel more grounded in reality. I just personally find Dante boring and I've already read a book that had way too much Dante and it completely turned me off of him forever so I wasn't a fan of that. It didn't overpower the book though so it's still worth a read even if you're not a fan of Dante.

Overall I enjoyed this book as much as the first one and would definitely recommend this series to readers that are looking for something a little bit different.

4.5 stars. Soooo good! Full review to come.

*ARC received from publisher via NetGalley

I loved this book and here's why:

1. Richly detailed world-building. In this second book, we learn more about the Scintilla (the givers) and the Arrazi (the takers). Light versus dark and it all connects somehow to Dante's Paradiso and even Michaelangelo. There's a certain Da Vinci Code feel to the story as Cora and her friends research the origin of the species and why Clancy wants three Scintilla. Why were the Arrazi created if they have to kill in order to survive? Why are all of these natural disasters happening? Why are people dying mysteriously all over the world? Are the Scintilla meant to save the world? Things are slowly being revealed and I'm fascinated with the world Tracy Clark has created.

2. Complex villains. Clancy and Ultana are a bit cartoonish, but the whole Arrazi race is much more complicated. They are soul suckers, but if they don't kill, they die. Finn is devastated after finding out what he is and decides he would rather die than have to kill in order to live. And there are other Arrazi who also don't want to kill, struggle with it, but ultimately do it.

3. The romance. Talk about star-crossed lovers. Cora is still reeling from finding out about Finn, and now she doubts that he ever loved her since she believes he was just drawn to her because she's a Scintilla. We also get Finn's POV as well, and it's hard not to still love him even as he does horrible things. All he wants to do is help Cora, but at the same time, he can't be around her without putting her in danger.

There's action, adventure, death, and betrayal. So many heartbreaking moments, I need the next book NOW

*SPOILER ALERT FOR THE FIRST BOOK*

In the continuation of her amazing adventure, Cora Sandoval is tormented and makes it her mission to stop the evil Arrazi from murdering innocent people and using and killing the Scintilla for their own bennefict.
The problem is that the boy who has her heart is Arrazi and she can't forget about Finn nor Finn can forget his feelings for Cora.
Cora and the surviving Scintilla must unite themselves in order to solve the mystery of The Light Key and maybe put an end to their persecution. Their failure will result in persecution and death as well as the declining of mankind.
The fist thing I want to add about this book is about the whole series. I entered Cora's world thinking this would be a mystical mysterie that has all to do with folklore and love and may I tell you that I couldn't been more worng.
These books do have folklore and romance but they are so much more! They have science fiction, history, family values and world culture as well as many influences from many religions.
In this book I was astonished with how much the characthers evolved between the beginning of the story itself and how deeply they have changed. These are not ordinary people they all have so many layers to them that you can't even imagine what they're going to do next (spotlight for Gráinne).
I have to add that this book will suprise you and to expect being surprised because of what I like to call the "holy" plot-twists.
I advise this book to everyone! If you tought you liked the first installment of this series you will certainly love this one but prepare your heart and keep tissues with you at all times!

After reading the first book in this series Scintillate, I was super excited to read Deviate and continue Cora's journey to uncover the mysteries surrounding her people and their history, as well as to see what was to come of her love for Finn after he turned out to be an Arrazi.

There are so many things to love about this series. Clark expertly weaves history, art, and literature into this unique tale and the outcome is amazing. The mysteries definitely kept me intrigued. But I did find this book to have a bit of that middle book syndrome. A lot of stuff just starts to feel like " Okay I get it. Every time they seem to be getting out of this mess they get into an ever bigger one. Gotcha. " so although the story plot is still good and I like that we moved toward the set up for the next book I feel like this book was doing a lot of filling in between book one and what's going to go down in book three. With that said I still think it was all important and not boring per say just me going okay okay I need to find out where this is going while things are still good and before they get too repetitive. I am still very much caught up in this story and desperately want to read the third book to see how this is going to end. ( Please let Cora and Finn get their HEA. Please. Please. Please! )

Deviate (The Light Key Trilogy #2) by Tracy Clark

Deviate (The Light Key Trilogy #2) by Tracy Clarkdeals with Cora, her mother, and Giovanni trying to stay alive since they are on the run from the Arrazi. Cora is devastated over the death of her father but she knows she needs to protect the rest of her family so no harm comes to them.

Cora decides she can’t just do nothing and watch the Arrazi kill innocent people. So with the help of her friends and family, she starts to investigate who and what she is and about the light key.

Finn wants to help Cora as much as he can even if they can’t be together ever. He knows that she will always be his one true love. Cora tries not to think about Finn because it hurts to much but she loves him with all her heart.

In many series, the middle book usually falls flat and is not very important. Fortunately, that is not a problem here. Deviate is full of excitement, some shots of humor and a good dose of sadness and loss.

The book is told from alternating points of view which helps give a better understanding to the story. You definitely get to know the characters better and there are plenty of twists and turns that make you say, "wow".

Deviate is heart wrenching at times but is an absolute must read!

Deviate is the sequel of Scintillate. Though it was good, I did not quite enjoy the sequel as I did with the first book. The pace was too slow for my liking.

With the betrayal of Finn, Cora is determined than ever to stop Arrazi from killing her kind. As a Scintilla, her powers are wanted. With more Scintilla being murdered, Cora must act fast and find a way how to help her people.

Deviate is a good story line. Though the pace killed me. I felt like a lot of information was thrown at once. It felt like I was reading a history book. Cora spent so much time doing research, which is good, since she needs to find a way to help out. Yet, she did very little of action. It was to the very end that she actually did something.

Even though I did not mentioned this on my Scintillate review, the love triangle is torture. I don’t think it is necessary for a second love interest. Sure Finn is an Arrazi but he is devoted to her. Just stop already, make them happy! In Deviate, it is more annoying. It is vague. There is no option. I just want Cora and Finn together. They are meant to be. In a happy bubble. God, I hope the last book is full of Finn.

Despite this, I am looking forward to a happy ending. I hope Cora finds a way to help her people and I hope she finds happiness with Finn. Seriously, I will not be a happy camper if they do not end up together.

Wow! Even better than the first book, I can't wait to see where this story goes in the third book.

Deviate picks up right where Scintillate left off. Now we get to see from both Cora's and Finn's point of views, which is helpful we are able to see what the Arrazi are up to with Finn while Cora is off looking for answers with her mom and Giovanni.

I love Finn and Cora but Giovanni has his perks too. This is one book where I love both love interest. While we know Cora truly loves Finn, through out this book see starts to see herself loving Giovanni as well. Both boys have there problems and hurt Cora throughout the book, both are still good guys. We get to know Cora's mom and what she went through for the last 12 years with Clancy, we also get to see Cora's and her moms relationship grow. That is my one of my favorite parts of the book.

More information about the Arrari and Scintillate is reveled. And much much heart ache for us and Cora. This is a great second book in the Light Key trilogy 5 stars I can't wait for the third book, I hope Cora has a happy ending to her story!

Wow! This book was shocking, gripping and pain filled. My heart broke for them, literally!

Deviate is in dual POV's. I loved getting to see both point of views. It was empowering, gripping and made your heart ache.

Finn-man... he's my man! I just loved him. I'm team FINN all the way!!! Just everything he did.. and always does for Cora... sigh! Team Finn all the way!

Cora--she's kick ass in this book. She wants to figure things out and I'm happy she's at the place she's at/become.

Giovanni-- You'll like him. He does do a lot for Cora.... but I'm team Fin all the way!

Secrets, lies, omissions, shocking events, pains, love, friendships, family..... all are found inside. You will literally be sucked to the pages until you finish the book.

I love the story, the characters, history and uniqueness this series brings. I look forward with much anticipation for book 3

I fooking Loved it! If you haven't read Scintillate go get it now!! I enjoyed the first book but this book had much more suspense, action mystery and dang it I may or may not have cried.
It is a mix between sci-fi, dystopian and fantasy which is totally cool in my book!
I was on the edge of seat with the things happening. I was holding my breath through out the book. I could have died with the lack of oxygen. Okay ignore my hyperbole.
Cora has my respect (hats off), she is amazing. The characters are well developed and are learning and growing. The arc of them is cool and the plot is amazing!!!
I'm dying to get my hands on the last book. I just can't imagine what is going to happen. I just know that I'm going to be holding my breath for sure. Got the book from publisher from netgalley in exchange of an honest review.

A library customer got me into this series. I've become really invested in these characters. This book is much more gripping than the first. Great escapist melodramatic fantasy. Do you want to step out of your own mundane life for a while? Pick up this series. Go to Ireland; run from danger; fight evil; work on solving the mysteries of life, the universe, and everything; be an aura-seeing magical energy subspecies of human, or a reluctant energy vampire who must kill in order to survive, but feels guilty about it. Must be willing to suspend disbelief. Dante and Michelangelo are somehow involved? Sure, why not? The Catholic Church? Yeah, ok. This is somehow a fun read, despite the protagonist's family members dying one by one.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. Deviate is the second novel in The Light Key Trilogy by Tracy Clark. It's the continuing story of a young lady trying to find out who and what she is, and who wants her dead. This story just keeps getting better! I've come to admire this young lady as she has grown and became stronger throughout this story. The characters are so vivid that I feel as if I'm in the story with them. There is plenty of suspense that keeps me glued to the story. I love Tracy's writing style as it reads smoothly. I've started the last book in the trilogy and I'm so eager to find out what happens with this strong female lead. It's a definite must read trilogy!

Tracy Clark has done in her second novel what not all can do: expanded on the themes and the mythology set forth in Scintillate adding rich characters (and new enemies!!) in new and intriguing locations. She releases tantalizing clues to the greater mystery throughout the book, gripping bits that will grab you and force you to turn the pages. This is a second book that goes beyond not disappointing -it spirals her readers deeper into the mystery and adventure and will make the wait until her next book unbearable.

This is a must read.

What a followup to book one! And I feel like drowning my sorrows that I have to wait for book three by eating something Irish. Sigh, all I have are soda crackers. I thought that Tracy Clark really put depth into her characters and the background story blending in Irish celtic sites. Bottom line, there are evil powers who want power and will do anything to get it or keep it.The two main characters have to stay apart, or they will destroy each other. How cool is that? Well, not for them, but for the reader it makes a good read.

Summary: After being betrayed by the one she loves, Cora and her family flee from the Arrazi – a race of beings who search to consume or destroy them – in hopes of finding safety. Determined to destroy her hunters, Cora continues her search for the truth about the two races in hopes of finding a way to keep her kind – the Scintilla – alive for good.

Review: Deviate picks up right where its predecessor Scintillate left off: Cora, her mother, and Giovanni are all determined to find somewhere safe to go, knowing full well there is almost nowhere they can be protected. Not only are the Arrazi looking for them, but they don’t even know exactly who is an Arrazi or who is working for them. On top of all that, Cora is still being searched for by the Irish government for any information she has on the two deaths she witnessed. They are on the run, but have no idea where to even run to. Matters are made worse when Dun and Mari arrive in Ireland to help Cora, only to get caught up in this dangerous life-or-death situation. The five of them are on a journey to survive with so many obstacles against them.

I think the best place to start off with is romance. Cora is still seething after discovering her ex-boyfriend, Finn Doyle, is actually an Arrazi. Their love is a death sentence for Cora, and she knows it. Their love had already gotten her father killed, pulled her into a dangerous situation, and she’s unsure if he even felt that way about her because of her or because he was attracted to her energy. Her heart is broken terribly in a way that keeps Cora unsure of everything for the rest of the book. Giovanni almost functions as another love interest in this book – something that was obvious in the last one – but Cora doesn’t seem to really reciprocate the feelings. She’s too heartbroken to want someone else, plus she’s convinced he also is only attracted to her because they are some of the last Scintilla and not because of her. Really, Cora is not in the place to have anyone romantically. Tracy does include some romantic scenes between Giovanni and Cora, but my problem with those scenes is they have another tragic twist in them. Without giving anything away, I don’t honestly know how Cora would be able to trust either one of these boys again. And I honestly don’t know if I want her to be with either one. Still, there was a steamy hookup in this book that was quite enjoyable to read. I was happy to have it there as it was truly well written. I also thoroughly enjoyed how it was interrupted and ruined by the terrible aforementioned twist that made me root for Cora to stay single.

The romance I really want to comment on has to do with her cousin, Mari. If you do not wish to have light book spoilers, PLEASE don’t continue to read. When Mari arrives with Dun, it is obvious that there is some sort of attraction between the two of them. I got a little upset about this literary trope – I mean, did she really have to have the two best friends together? It didn’t help later on in the book when Mari apparently has a fling with this girl (Teruko) she only knew for a couple days. Teruko was barely mentioned in the book, and barely played a role other than to function as something extra heartbreaking for Mari. While I truly appreciate the relationship between Mari and Teruko, I was very disappointed with how quickly it came and went. Tracy built up Mari and Dun to the point where I wanted to throw the book at the wall, only to toss in this other relationship briefly and have it lead to absolutely nowhere. I was truly disappointed in that aspect.

As for how the plot went, I have to commend Tracy for writing a story even more mysterious than the original. I truly could not predict half of the things that went on, and there was so much. I have to question what actually happened at the beginning of this book because so much occurs that it seems like it happened more than one book ago. While we still have more to learn about the mysterious key Cora discovered in the last book, most of the secrets about the Scintilla and Arrazi are exposed. Best of all, I loved the twist about the Society. I felt even more paranoid than Cora while reading, honestly. All I want to say is that it’s very hard to trust ANYONE in this book. Even when you think you understand how a situation is about to go, you may be wrong. I especially loved the Mami Tulke twist at the end because it made you reevaluate everything that happened prior. The heart-wrenching ending of this book makes me ecstatic for the next book. This is one very well-developed story that somehow remains excitingly unpredictable. My one honest critique with the plot is how many unnecessary deaths seem to happen. The last death in the book on Cora’s side in particular. It is almost as if Tracy has a thing against Cora’s family. Honestly, I see why the deaths were included, but I also think it’s a poor way to push Cora forward. Everything else seemed so purposeful and necessary, except for the deaths in this book. There were better ways she could have moved the plot along; I just wish it didn’t have to be by killing off these various characters.

As for character development, I don’t know what else I can add other than that Cora continues to grow, only this time it is more inward. The more disappointments she faces throughout this book, the more she relies on herself. While I think it is important for her to question those around her, I’m a little sad to see that she’s becoming more paranoid. As for the other characters, there isn’t too much development happening. The villains who were in the first book were just as terrible as the first one, only their reasoning was finally explained. The new villains were outwardly evil from the start. Finn honestly still acts the same to me. While he starts of questioning his existence in a suicidal manner, Finn still remains as good as he can be and as absorbed in his love for Cora. With the exception of Giovanni’s twist, there really wasn’t much change with him either. We even learn he has family he didn’t know about, but he acts the same brash way he did before. I was very disappointed by the lack of development in our characters for this second book; I’m hoping that’s something that happens more in the next one.

All in all, I really enjoyed Deviate. It was beautifully written, unpredictable, and filled with heart-wrenching plot twists that made me crave more. I am so excited to see what happens next in Cora’s path especially after losing so many important people in her life and discovering more about the Scintilla history. Now that Mami Tulke is in the picture, I believe everything is finally going to come together. Deviate is fast-paced, full of twists, and just as enchanting as the first. I truly recommend picking up the Light Key trilogy if you haven’t already.

can’t wait to read last one!

I really liked this book. At times it felt a little slow. Other times I simply could not get enough! I loved the addition of the extra characters in this book. Really enjoyed the description of the facility from Dr. M in this book.
One thing that annoyed me a little bit is that I want to see the romance blossom between Cora and either of the boys. Romance department was very slow throughout most of the book. Loved the chapter on Cora and G in the facility… very steamy.
Cannot wait to read the 3rd book.

Will say, if you are wondering whether you are able to read these books as a standalone…. DEFINITELY NOT! Very reliant on events from the previous book!

This series is one I bought years ago…. And never read. Been trying to work through all the books I have here before buying more and this series has been a pleasant surprise. It’s in the teen section but I think young adult women will love it too. Love the characters and the story line is not your normal vampire/werewolf stuff. Mixed with classic paintings and readings, this aura story is really something special! On to the last book now for me!

Great Story

I enjoy how this book has been unfolding. The story is a unique one. I do get aggravated with Cora though, and her unwise and foolish
decisions. I am looking forward to
The conclusion though!

Interesting

The plot of this novel took off on steroids about mid way through… I was about to give up on finishing the novel, but then got reeled back in to the thick of it..
