I live in the small town of Petrolia, Ontario, Canada and I am a mother to a wonderful teenage boy (didn't think those words could be typed together...surprise) and wife to a truly supportive and understanding husband, who thankfully doesn't think I'm crazy.

I have always had two profound dreams in life. To fall back hundreds of years in time and live in a simpler world, not bogged down by technology and to write novels. Since only one of these was a possibility I decided to make the other come alive on paper.
I write mm romance novels that take place in fantastical medieval type settings and love to use the challenges of the times to give my stories and characters life.

Not my favourite in the series. I didn't like the case they were working on. Not my cup of tea. I didn't like the situations they found themselves in. Hasn't Diem been through enough? I really hope that for the rest of the series no one puts a finger on him ever again.

The story is unnecessarily cruel at times, and then we get scenes that felt like reading a comedy. The plan on how to solve the situation towards the end was so unbelievable and amateurish, considering how dangerous those men were supposed to be.

As for the relationship, I wanted to slap them both. I totally get why Tallus would annoy Diem with his behaviour. He never listens. But I also understand Tallus, because Diem keeps treating him like a child. Which is totally valid, because he does act like a child. Frustrating, both of them.

However, I loved the ending. It was so so good. I loved seeing Costa, even though he didn’t have the brightest ideas in this one. I hope that Diem will get some help for his addiction, and I hope that help will come from one very beloved character. Also, this book made me very curious about Memphis and certain someone. I’d love a book about them. 🤞😊

On the side note, it took me 4 books to realize that the book covers don’t feature the same man. 😅 I don’t like them, so I don’t pay close attention. Is the person on the cover for books 2 and 4 supposed to be Tallus? Because that’s not what he looks like at all, imo.

When Diem and Tallus save a man's life, they prove the old adage, "no good deed goes unpunished." Soon they are racing against the clock to find someone who doesn't want to be found.

The plot is tense and edgy, with danger lurking at every corner. When Diem is abducted, Tallus calls in the cavalry, aka Costa and Kitty.

I was not expecting this story to be quite so angsty. I don't have a lot of faith in Diem and Tallus as a couple. They fight constantly, and their relationship is the definition of dysfunctional.

Diem's rage still gets the best of him. He's a (barely) functioning alcoholic.

Tallus has a serious shopping addiction that everyone sweeps under the rug.

I'm not really feeling the romance, and my rating reflects that. Clearly, I'm in the minority, so take this review with a grain of salt.

I can’t get enough of watching them grow together. ♡

“To me, it’s priceless. Like you.”

And I can only imagine how much fun NJ must’ve had writing that first AND last chapter. The Tallus-dramatics. Fabulous. But god the ending was also heartfelt. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next.

“Is it enough?”
“More than enough.” He clasped my hand and squeezed.
“You are more than enough, Diem.”
“I hope so.”

“I can’t believe I broke my fucking glasses again.”

💀

And while the mysteries in this series are not really overwhelmingly captivating I really enjoyed this one.

Highly anticipated, but not the 5* I was hoping for.

I love almost all the books written by Nicky James, even the darker ones. I ADORED her Valor & Quaid books, even though both main characters have their own battles, and the mysteries left me sitting on the edge of my seat more often than not.

And I know - Diem and Tallus are different, not at all well matched and smooth, especially Diem has a ton of issues - an abusive father, alcohol, anger management- it’s hard to be him, and it’s hard to be in his head. There are only two things in his life he loves more than everything: his Nana, who has dementia and keeps confusing him with his grandfather.

And Tallus.

So ofc, when things happen that threaten both Nana and Tallus, he shuts down, and stops communicating.

And I… didn’t like it. I didn’t like the dynamics between Diem and Tallus for the first half of the book, even though I felt with Diem. They weren’t good for each other, even though they more than made that up in the second half. And while I liked Tallus so far, I totally got why Diem was exasperated why his antics in this book.

But honestly - the thing that made me switch from my audio back to reading was the mystery.

One of the things that I loved about the cases in these books was that they’ve been - while not exactly realistic- at least a little bit relatable: the children that went missing. Unfaithful, now dead spouses. Psychotic teens. It felt real to a certain extent.

But this case here… uh. It was some James Bond /mafia/tech super genius/uber rich elite club thing that was unnecessarily cruel at times, in a way that just didn’t sit right with me.

I’ve read my share of mafia romances, and I like them well enough, especially when they’re so completely OTT that they don’t feel real any more, if you know what I mean. Here… idk. I felt the need to be able to skim/read over the crueler passages, that’s why I couldn’t continue listening (and it’s narrated by NJR, who could genuinely read the phone book and I wouldn’t be able to put it down!)

It made me feel tense, angsty and achy. Also: there were certain parts that made the tech nerd in me roll my eyes, like the “tracker” that obviously didn’t need a battery, or Kitty’s super powers.

So even if I LOVED the ending, I can’t rate it with more than 3 stars. Reading it didn’t leave me in a happy place. I don’t feel like Diem and Tallus are a good match.

And I really hope Diem finds a way out of his alcohol addiction - maybe with the help of Aslan? He deserves to be happy, and I really want to see him heathy, both body and mind.

A Breath of Life is the latest mystery for Diem and Tallus. It is a fantastic story that had me intrigued and curious about how it would get resolved, considering how dire the situation ended up becoming. Another great aspect of this story is the growth, depth, and maturity between Diem and Tallus. They have grown so much in their relationship, and this entry features many insightful and meaningful moments between the two that had me smiling because of their impact and significance.

Overall, I loved this entry. Seeing these two work together and learn more about each other is brilliantly done. They are truly meant for one another, and I cannot get enough of their stories. I am excited to see what comes next.

Good lawd that was a ride

I wasn't sure what I was going to get in this book but it definitely wasn't what I got!

However, what I did get was an absolute headrush and a total tension builder from start to finish.

There were times when I really wanted to shake Tallus and tell him to leave off the pressure but Diem is certainly his own worst enemy too.

The suspense element is superbly done, although things did wrap up rather quickly with a bit of convenient deployment of Ruiz and Kitty.

I loved seeing how much more settled both Tallus and Diem were, even though there's still some obvious struggles.

But the difference in how Diem is able to show Tallus how he feels is like night and day and, while they still had moments at odds with each other, there's many more good ones.

Diem's self-sacrificing nature is still in full flow at times but he's also becoming more self aware of how his actions affect his partner.

Tallus is as irrepressible as ever but he's also got a sharp mind and he wants to stretch his PI investigating skills further, and this case gives them plenty of experience.

This story drew me in from the start and I couldn't put the book down until it was done.

I loved previous books of this series, but in general I am not a fan of relationships over really long series. Nicky James has made me read 7 books of one couple (and like the books! Though I have not got book 8..) and I was interested enough in this pairing to go along for some books.

But I tried to read this, book 4, and I just could not get over how different, how mean, how off both MCs seemed to be in the first chapters, from the characters in previous books. How much I just did not like them here.

"Saving his life seems like the right thing to do" - in the blurb. Yeah, no shit, saving the life of somebody you find knifed and taking his last breaths in an alley SEEMS like the right thing to do, yeah for decent human beings. Is it going to turn out not be the right thing so that it "only" seems? Am I supposed to care about somebody who has doubts if it is the right thing? And for detectives (including one who really wanted to be one) our MCs seem supremely uncurious, unconcerned in the first chapters about who the man was or who knifed him.

I know their back stories so I should understand how Diem can be gruff because of past trauma but he just seemed like an asshole to a presumably dying man, an asshole to anybody questioning assistance dogs (because yeah people abuse that...) and Tallus just seemed an unethical greedy asshole (sorry!) being hyper all the time and with a real problem with consummerism that is now acknowledged. The victim in the alley could survive, come on before you start selling his shit. It could be a clue for the real police, which actually helped them once or twice before. Maybe the victim will die, maybe somehow it will all be justified in the plot somehow but I am not going to go read this story or(or rate it), these characters are just not the ones I liked previously and it will drive me crazy criticizing their actions here. I will probably quit the series here though I will keep an eye out for trusted reviews of future books.

Now that was really intense.

On all levels … the plot, the action and the relationship development.
Fear, worry, anguish, guilt, pain, but also so much love and tenderness.
Not to forget those heart-stopping moments!
I devoured this in one sitting, and there was no way anybody could have wrangled that kindle out of my hands!

I love Tallus and Diem as a couple. They have come so far from book 1, something that’s acknowledged a few times, but they still have quite a bit to go, too.

I admit I’m no huge fan of Tallus’s ‘drama queen’ side. I know it’s meant to be amusing etc etc, but I catch myself just shouting ‘Come on, Tallus, grow up! You are better than that!’ in my head when his 'sassy' side breaks through.

Thing is … Tallus IS a really good and very clever guy. And he does understand Diem on a level nobody else does. And I love him for that. When it counts, he stands up for Diem, despite their previous arguments and hurtful discussions.

As for Diem … I have no idea how Nicky James could go through with heaping even more pain on a guy who has experienced virtually nothing but abuse all his life. Hearing more of his backstory broke my heart. Seeing him fall back into old habits when overwhelmed by the emotional pressure he’s put under hurt so much!

But despite it all … there is never any doubt that these two men belong. That they are both willing to fight for each other … literally and figuratively. I loved their quiet moments, their love making, the defining moments that move their relationship on.
More learning about how they can function best together is needed, by both men. And Diem still has a mountain of issues to tackle.

Great writing, even if I had a few niggles about the plot.

Can’t wait for more!

This is book four in Nicky James's Shadowy Solutions series. The first three books in this series should diffidently be read before this one in order to understand not only the personal relationship progress but also the working relationship's progress.
This story picks up a few months after book #3, Reading Between the Lines ended, and we find Tallus and Diem, and Diem’s new service dog, Echo, living together. Tallus, has completed his P.I. qualifications, now dividing his work week between his job as a records clerk for the Toronto P.D. and working for "Shadowy Solutions".

What had started as a rescue in the alley turned out to be a much more sinister coercion by an underground organization trying to find a missing person. The investigation felt to be more desperate, because of the very real threat that was hanging over Diem and Tallus's heads if they decided not to do as instructed.

The lies and secrets took a big toll on our two guys relationship, making things strained between them as the case brought up bad memories and new fears to their life, that was at last with them together, but yet so very fragile and new. Diem went through the proverbial "wringer" in this one, both physically and emotionally, almost erasing all the progress that he had made in the last 3 books

Tallus refused to be left in the dark, even when all Diem wanted was to protect him and keep him safe. It seemed that that only resulted in more stress and more arguments. You could really feel the tension as it ramped up when they finally started putting all the clues together. It didn't matter how hard they were working, It would only take one misstep to send them into the enemy's hands.

I can't say that their plans were the most well thought out, but they are usually effective in getting Tallus and Diem what they need to solve the cases and get the "bad guys" off the streets and off their backs. I thought that watching the dust settle was going to be the high point for our favorite couple... but Diem had one last very romantic gesture in mind for Tallus to show him just how deep his feelings were for him. I've read almost all of Nicky James's books but the four books in this series had a very different feeling than anything that I have read that she has previously written. I would eagerly devour any additional books that she may want to write for Tallus and Diem. Come on Ms. James...your fans can't get enough!

Wow! What a fantastic story and narration! Nicky James does it again! A Breath of Life is another captivating case that had me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book. Diem and Tallus are back and it's so amazing to see how much they've grown since the first book. There was so much laugh out loud banter, some shock and awe, as well as serious emotions. It's all the feels that you want to experience with the end result leaving your heart happy! Nick J Russo's performance is perfection! He truly brings everyone to life and brings everything to the next level! I cannot recommend this book enough, I absolutely loved it!

A- / 4.5 stars rounded up.

Note: A Breath of Life is book four in a same-couple series in which the relationship arc is ongoing. The previous three books should be read before this one.

This fourth book in Nicky James’ Shadowy Solutions series picks up a few months afterReading Between the Lines ended, and it finds Tallus and Diem (and Diem’s new service dog, Echo) living together and Tallus, having completed his PI qualification, splitting his work week between his job as a records clerk for Toronto PD and working for Shadowy Solutions. Their relationship is on an upward trajectory, too, with Diem slowly working through his issues surrounding intimacy and trust and learning to communicate better. Half the time he still wonders what on earth a gorgeous guy like Tallus – who could have anyone he wanted – is doing with someone so damaged and difficult as he is, but the other half, well, he’s hopelessly, head-over-heels in love and trying hard to be a good boyfriend.

They’ve gone out to pick up dinner one evening when a man dressed in what Tallus quickly identifies as Edwardian costume stops them to ask what time it is. It’s unusual, for sure, but perhaps he’s an actor or on his way to a party… they dismiss it and move on, but when they’re on the way home, they encounter the man again – he’s been beaten to within an inch of his life and stabbed. Tallus calls 911 and while they’re waiting for help to arrive, the man, who is in a pretty bad way, urgently insists that Diem find something in his pocket, and once he’s found it (a small leather pouch) tells him to “Throw… away… Bad.” Diem doesn’t understand and tries to replace the item, but the man is desperate, and before Diem can do or say anything else, the police and EMTs arrive and Diem and Tallus have to give statements as the man is driven away in the ambulance. Later, when Diem makes to throw the pouch into a nearby dumpster, Tallus, curious about its contents, stops him, but Diem refuses to take out what’s inside while they’re in the street.

Clearly distressed, Diem tries to ignore the pouch once they’re home, but Tallus’ curiosity is seriously piqued, and he insists they take a look at whatever is inside. This proves to be a beautifully crafted playing card – the Ace of Spades - made out of what appears to be precious metals and gemstones. It’s unique – and likely valuable – and Tallus is adamant that they can’t just chuck it away; there might even be a reward if they can find out who it belongs to. Diem is not at all pleased about any of this; he’s already unsettled at having a man almost die in front of him and at riffling through his pockets, no matter that he’d been asked to, and is finding it hard to regain his equilibrium. To keep Tallus happy, he agrees to have the card valued and, if they discover it was stolen, to follow the correct procedure to claim any reward that’s been offered.

The card is indeed valuable (which leads Tallus to start thinking about selling it and using the proceeds to refresh his wardrobe (!)) - but Diem can’t forget the desperation of the injured man or stop wondering why he wanted the card thrown away. With things still a bit rocky between them following the events of the previous evening, Diem fans the flames of irritation Tallus has been harbouring by putting his foot down and telling him that if the card hasn’t been reported stolen they’re going to get rid of it. Conversation over. And there’s nothing more guaranteed to put Tallus’ back up than being told what to do.

Five days later, they’re no closer to finding out if the card was stolen or who it might belong to, and Tallus’ resentment at Diem’s refusal to give him any say in what they do with it has started to fester. He knows Diem, knows he can be stubborn, high-handed and uncommunicative, but Tallus is hurt and angry at having his opinions dismissed and ignored and reaches a point where he can’t rein in his frustration any longer. Tempers flare and a heated argument ensues that ends with Diem walking out, with Echo in tow, to visit his Nana at her new nursing home.

Diem hates arguing with Tallus, which has put him even more on edge than he already was, but their problems are about to get a lot bigger and much harder to solve. The Ace of Spades turns out to be dangerous in a way neither Tallus nor Diem could ever have expected, and leads them into the murky world of organised crime where everything has its price and nothing – except life – is cheap. With Tallus’ safety – and that of Diem’s beloved Nana – on the line, Diem is given a task he absolutely can not fail to complete, while at the same time he must prevent his intuitive and impulsive boyfriend from suspecting anything. Hiding things from Tallus is something Diem has never found easy – but this is one secret he’ll have to keep if he wants to keep his boyfriend alive.

However, his desperation to keep Tallus safe by keeping him in the dark has the opposite effect. Infuriated by Diem’s overbearing overprotectiveness, Tallus becomes even more determined to find out what’s going on, and once he’s calmed down enough to see past what Diem is saying and doing and starts thinking about why, he begins – with some help from his cousin Costa Ruiz and his friend and colleague, Kitty – to put the pieces together. He and Diem have become mixed up with some extremely dangerous people who will stop at nothing to protect themselves and get what they want – and they're running out of time.

In A Breath of Life, Nicky James has crafted an utterly compelling story filled with nail-biting tension and high-stakes action and drama in which the romance and suspense are perfectly intertwined. The plot is, as always, clever and well constructed with lots of twists and turns along the way, but what makes this one of the best books in this series so far (and one of my favourite books of 2025) is the superb character work. Diem’s stress levels are through the roof (and so were mine at times!) and his distress is so well rendered as to be palpable. He’s a very troubled man who bears a lot of emotional and physical scars thanks to his abusive father and who carries a lot of anger and frustration at the best of times, so it’s not surprising that the situation he’s thrown into pushes him close to breaking point. Under immense pressure, he starts to spiral quickly and his constant worry and overwhelming rage sometimes impair his judgment and get in the way of his making any real progress with his task – which (in a neat bit of role reversal) gives Tallus the chance to use that keen intelligence of his to solve the mystery and work out how to save the day.

While we’ve seen Tallus and Diem have disagreements before – they’re both incredibly stubborn and quick-tempered - this is the first time their arguments have turned deliberately hurtful. It’s visceral and yet realistic; relationships aren’t all sweetness and light and I appreciated that the story reflects that while it also never allows us to doubt that these two love each other deeply and shows them to be mature enough to work through their differences without compromising anything of themselves. Tallus and Diem really are an odd couple, but they’re a perfect fit.

A Breath of Life is a gripping read and a terrific addition to the Shadowy Solutions series. Diem goes through his own personal version of hell in this story, but by the end, he’s in a better place – although still a work in progress - and ready to take an important step in his relationship with Tallus. Although Nicky James’ next release ( Kismet - December 2025) will be a standalone featuring new characters, I’m eagerly anticipating more adventures with Tallus and Diem next year.

This really pains me to write but I didn't love it the way I loved all of the other books.
The relationship drama was too much, the case was only ok.
I felt it took them forever to get anywhere and both were fumbling in the dark. Clue in Kitty and Costas to save their asses and the case.
The audio was (as always) outstandingly performed ❤️

Really love this couple but I did kinda feel like I missed out on some of the relationship development between books 3 and 4...almost to the point that I thought I skipped book 3. Perhaps my memory is just failing me. Regardless this was quite enjoyable.

Really hoping for more in this series and would love a book for Memphis.

I wanted to give it more stars but this author insists on hurting the MCs just for the sake of it and I am over it. We get it, Diem has been and will always be a punch bag to someone. But it's really annoying now. And don't even get me started on how whinny Tallus is, especially at the beginning of the book. I found it even more over the top than usual, which is saying something.
Having said that, I did enjoy the story and there was some (slow) character development. And I loved Costa, even if he made some weird decisions which did not make much sense. Overall, it was a fun book to read.

I just love Tallus and Diem

What a joy it has been to get to watch their relationship evolve and grow.

The love they have for each other is everything. The trust they have in each other is so beautiful.

Diem has come so far. He is so in love with Tallus. His world revolves around him.

Diem has so much trauma from his past, but his love for Tallus is what keeps him pushing to grow and change.

These two find themselves in a sticky situation once again, but this time Diem is dragged in and must keep Tallus separate.

Knowing Tallus this doesn't go over well. Especially when Diem comes home battered and roughed up.

Diem tries to lie, sneak and hide and solve this book's challenges on his own.

But our ever oh too smart Tallus gets himself involved much to Diems dismay.

Diem can't fathom Tallus getting hurt. I truly believe it would wreck him in the worst way.

“No matter how rocky our foundation, I would always go to him. This tortured, troubled man owned my heart.”

Tallus truly is the light to Diems dark.

I adored this book. The action, the snark, sass and banter. The growth in Diem is so genuine and sincere. It's beautiful to read.

“For all his flaws and despite his frustrating refusal to explain what the fuck was going on inside him most days, he was a good man who loved me in the only way he knew how.”

I loved their found family too. Kitty is fantastic. It was great seeing more of Costa as well, Quaid too.

Tallus's dramatics had me laughing out loud. This book was funny even amongst the angst.

“You made me whole again, and I didn’t think that was possible.” “I love you, Diem.” “I love you.”

Diem was the star of the show for me, though. I'm so glad for him, for them, really. They are incredible together. I just love them so much.

“You are more than enough, Diem.”

I hope we will get more books from these see and to see what other hi jinks they get up to

I LOVED THIS! It is my favorite in this series! I cannot believe how far Tallus and Diem have come.

I think my favorite thing about this was that the entire story was focused on them. They weren’t trying to solve someone else’s case but instead were the ones involved. It made the book intimate in the same way they have become with each other after so much hard work and time. They needed something to bring them closer and James did that by having this entire case personally involve and affect them. Plus we got Costa, who I am halfway in love with, and Kitty being part of it all. And Echo is the sweetest doggy ever!

This was nail biting and even though I knew they’d make it out I was still on the edge of my seat. That shows how good of a writer Nicky James is. This was phenomenal! And that ending, I’m a puddle right now! I’ve melted! This was so sweet and beautiful and so perfectly them.

3.5* rounded up

Tallus and Diem are back for another wild investigation. The fourth in the series sees our intrepid private investigators in a race against time to find something of great importance for a very bad man or face some very serious consequences. The plot is pretty outlandish, but I'm good with a crazy case for these two to solve.

What I struggle with more is connecting with the main characters anywhere near equally. I feel nothing but more compassion for Diem with every bit of his painful past that's revealed and how it plays out in his current lack of belief in his self-worth, his behaviours and the constant internal battles to be a better man for Tallus. Meanwhile, I find the younger man utterly frivolous at best and callously selfish at worst most of the time, and when he does acknowledge his poor behaviour that pushes Diem's buttons or he asks for something he knows is beyond what Diem can give him, it's still somehow mostly about Tallus. And yet, there are just enough crumbs of optimism that keeps me coming back for more because these guys really do seem right for each other. They do genuinely understand each other.

So, while I want to love this series more than I do because I adore Diem and - I've said it before and I'll say it again - I do not like Tallus about 80% of the time, I'm giving A Breath Of Life 3.5* purely for the broken hero, the imaginative plotline and supporting roles from Costa and Kitty.

Gritty mystery, intricately woven into a fast paced and heart-stopping story!
What starts as a rescue of a stabbed man on their way home one evening, turns into a desperate life-or-death-case for Tallus and Diem.
The Shadowy Solutions series has a kind of noir feel to it from the get go, and in this installment that feeling is multiplied. We not only get our beloved growly Diem with his fedora, but also a seedy underground organisation, Edwardian style, with its members full of pocket watches, suspenders and questionable behavior.
I struggled a bit with Diem going into this mostly alone, although of course it makes sense in this instance and I understood why it had to happen this way. But my heart hurt for both of them, for Diem desperately trying to protect and save Tallus and his Nana. And for Tallus, being left out and knowing something’s going on. I love how they compliment each other and work so well together that way.
My heart broke for Diem, desperately trying to do the right thing and save his loved ones, but not being able to. And in the end endangering them and himself. I loved how Tallus came in to save the day with Kitty and his Costa, all bad ass investigator.
Nicky manages to still weave in heartfelt moments and palpable love from our both MCs throughout all the action.
And I fall in love with Diem a bit more with every new book. Seriously, how he struggles to show emotions, but works SO HARD to overcome his issues and be a better man for Tallus. I absolutely love his development!
Really liked this one and can’t wait for more!

I reviewed the print edition HERE, so I won't repeat myself here.

Nick J. Russo is one of my favourite narrators so I'm always happy to experience Nicky James' books in audio as well as in print. He's one of the very best m/m romance narrators around and is always well worth listening to, but I have to say, he's outdone himself here. The story is incredibly tense; the emotions and stakes are very high and he's spot on every time - Tallus' fake outrage at the beginning is really funny (funnier than it was when I read it!); he builds Tallus' increasing annoyance with Diem's high-handedness so well; the vulnerability and emotion bleeding through Diem's voice in so many places - especially the quiet terror in his voice when he believes Tallus is lost to him - is so brilliantly realised as to be completely heartbreaking. It's an incredible performance all round.

Also - his English accent is so much better than the last time I heard it! (Australian... not so much!)

like with the books before in this series, it always takes me some time to get used to Tallus.
Tallus is for me difficult, because I experience his character traits mostly negative and for me he acts a lot like a spoiled and self-centered brat.

said that, I also have to say that it gets better with each book and at the end of this one, I really liked him

Diem on the other hand, I love. I think his character development is amazing and I love that for him.

the story was interesting and paced really good.
I don't want to spoiler anything, so let me just say, I enjoyed the developments in the last third and love this character.
I hope the advice they gave Diem leads to a deeper involvement of our favourite lion.

I am so looking forward to the next book.

as I combined reading and listening, I can say, the narration is good but not my favourite performance by Nick J. Russo. but in all, he did a good job

4.5 stars. This was a lot grittier than the other books in this series, with on page torture and a lot of violence. The author really put Diem through the wringer here. The relationship development was great, especially knowing where they came from. Diem actively seeking out hugs and intimacy with Tallus and being able to say I love you was a great step forward. The immense stress from the case and everything that came with it was very hard on Diem personally though, so I really wish he will get a break in the next installment (if there will be one), because at some point it gets to be too much. He already has his incredibly hard past to deal with, so just piling on trauma is not believable anymore if you keep doing it. Enough is enough.

I did very much like the 20s vibe and the overall mystery was interesting (if not the most believable premise, but I didn't care much about that here) and kept me glued to the pages. And I'm not a dog person, but Echo was the sweetest!

OMG. My heart was in my throat for so much of this book. Even though I was 99% sure Diem and Tallus were going to be ok, I was still so nervous. What a ride this book was. All bcs the boys did a good thing. Lots of action but also lots of romantic moments btwn D and T. I loved every single one. Diem has come so far and he just LOVES Tallus so much even if he struggles to show it. Tallus knows and understands Diem’s struggles and loves Diem as much as Diem loves him. I love them together! My heart was so happy at the ending. These boys have my heart and I’m crossing my fingers there are more books!

”He extended a hand. A silent invitation.
No matter how rocky our foundation, I would always go to him. This tortured, troubled man owned my heart. For all his flaws and despite his frustrating refusal to explain what the fuck was going on inside him most days, he was a good man who loved me in the only way he knew how.”

I love Diem to pieces and always feel like wrapping him up in a warm hug. His character just pulls at my heartstrings. I wasn’t too crazy at the beginning of the series about Tallus and wasn’t sure whether he was the right guy for Diem, but I now adore these two together.

I feel like I’m going through the same circle every time with this series. It starts out with Diem being the biggest asshole ever to the point I start wondering if I really want to read a book with an MC that unlikeable.
Then the plot pulls me in. Happened again in this one. I was all in loving every minute of Diem and Tallus working on solving the puzzle while trying not to get killed. And through it all, Diem's behaviour improved enough that I will pick up the next one again.

I loved being back with Tallus and his cuddly bear Diem. This time their life is turned upside down after being good samaritans and helping the victim of an attack. All is not as it seems and before long Tallus and Diem, with Echo by his side, find themselves in a very dangerous position at the behest of some very evil villains. Amongst all the action and drama of this very intriguing and interesting case Diem is forced to take on, they do find themselves at loggerheads over certain aspects of their investigations. The friction between them does cause some issues but nothing insurmountable. Although it does turn up the stress levels for Diem worrying about his sassy bratty boyfriend. The case comes to a very satisfying conclusion but not without some very trying times for these two wonderful men.
I was very much hooked from start to finish and loved every twist and turn of the case as well as the growth in the relationship between Tallus and Diem. My heart was happy at the end although I still want to give Diem the biggest of hugs and tell him he’s worthy of the good things in his life.

Another banger from Nicky James! ♤

Recaps are not my vibe. Im just gonna say that I enjoyed the mystery story line. Was thrilled to still have the lighthearted jokey flirty banter to relieve some tension. Watching Tallus and Diems relationship grow and evolve from book to book is wonderful. I gotta say that im also so so proud of Diem. He has come so far since book 1. He is pretty amazing.

**Just when you think its not gonna happen. Crunch!** #IYKYK
