This informational book on gorillas has fantastic photography and age-appropriate information about these animals. I like how at the very beginning, the book establishes that a gorilla is an ape, and apes are primates. It distinguishes between the different kinds of gorillas, how much they weigh, and where they live. The book describes their diets, made up of plants, bamboo, wild celery, and thistles. Then, the book goes on to describe the very fascinating familial structure of gorillas and the steps the mother gorilla takes to raise her babies. The family groups that gorillas live in are called troops, which I did not know. Up to 30 gorillas can be in one troop! This information can be used to make connections to our own family structures. It also describes the "alpha" gorilla, or the silverback.
Personal reaction: I appreciated that this book had close up photographs of gorillas in their natural habitat, as well as the fact that at the bottom of every page there were important vocab words and their definitions.

This was another book I am including in a text set with the One and Only Ivan. It is also informative, but better for younger elementary readers. Simple text with great vocabulary, illustrations and can go on a Reading Ladder with Seymour Simon's Gorilla.
