Now this probably darkest graphic novels I read.Story relies on heavily on it's beautiful shaded illustrations, Adrian Smith likes to show us rather than tell us story as this graphic novel has barely double digit word count (not counting introduction).
Recommendation if you like your fantasy dark and brutal.

Generic, almost wordless fantasy story that relies heavily on its elaborate black-and-white artwork. Unfortunately, this artwork is so dark that it is sometimes difficult to decipher, and so static that the story never really comes to life. Adrian Smith is best known for his game illustrations (Warhammer), and I'm afraid it shows: individually, many panels look impressive in a way that brings Métal hurlant to mind, but as a story, Chronicles of Hate lacks narrative flow - which is a problem for a comic book.

This book is AWFUL. The art is so dark it's so hard to make out details. The panels are so static it appears nothing is happening. This is a huge problem when there are maybe 30 words in the book. So there's no story telling anywhere in the book. It's just a bunch of images with nothing to tie them together.

Art je tumoran, sumoran, ruzan a opet prelep. Prica je jednostavna ali dosta lepo se razvija i manje vise sve bez dijaloga. Mislim da u svih 100 strana ima mozda 10 prostih recenica.

With a suitably bizarre intro (that doesn't really explain anything) I felt like a trap door was released and my body was dropped wholesale into the weird, apocalyptic, bizzare-o world of Chronicles of Hate. Although the title would suggest a write up by the SCLP, its instead a (Warhammer 40k influenced?) lo-fi fantasy tale with all the stock characters orcs, humans, dwarves, etc. Following a particularly nasty scene involving hooks and chains, which gleefully reminded me of HellRaiser, the quality of the comic steadily declined from cool to what the hell am I reading?
You know things are pretty bad when you finish a (comic) book and 100+ pages later you still have no idea what has just happened. The story is as murky as the art itself but here's what I think happened. Our protagonist, who is something of a semi-human hunchback has to attain a magic mcguffin to save the day (a la Sword of Shanarra fare). During his quest a super-massive battle is going on between humans and some other evil species over whatnot.
Who knows? Everything in this comic is so irritatingly vague. With spare dialogue and murky colors its really difficult to figure out just what the hell is going on. Even when the illustrations are cool, there's nothing to dwell on because this crypto-fantasy tale feels like shoe polish more than anything. I would have happily accepted a story half as long with twice as much narration. Instead with an average of maybe ten words every five pages, not a single lick of sense pops up.
So maybe if you're a Warhammer 40k fan you'll dig this. And maybe's there's a brilliant story underneath all this much that I just couldn't pick up. But, when the comic ended on a stupid cliffhanger (to sell another sequel) I wasn't the least bit surprised.

Що тут сказати, беззаперечно Адріан Сміт зумів у бомбічний малюнок, але в процесі очі "замилюються" і десь на 20 сторінці стилістика вже не так вражає.
Автору вдалося створити брутальну атмосферу хтонічного хаосу, в мене виникли стійкі асоціації з армією царя Ксеркса в стрічці 300 спартанці + додайте туди сцену створення орків урук-хай в підземелях Ізенгарду, замішати дрібку Беовульфа і в кінці підставте масштабну пиздялку з Володаря перстнів при облозі Цитаделі.
Загалом мальопис дуже схожий на творіння Толкіна, є своє "брацтво персня", що скрадається ворожими землями, є масштабна бійня між останнім оплотом духовного світу та всепоглинаючим хаосом. Відсутність діалогових бульбашок і загалом текстової частини додає певного шарму історії, та й Смітту вдався сторітелінг, але на мою думку хороша історія поглибила б твір.

Увага! Тут панує ugly beauty!
Земля – нещасна й поневолена.
Головний герой – опецькуватий, страшненький, але милий водночас.
Поганці – злі і погані, угу.
Сцени баталії не можуть не нагадувати The Lord of the Rings, але щоб краще зрозуміти, що відбувається в історії їй би не завадив якийсь наратив. А так ви отримуєте зав’язку на старті, кілька слів, а далі - суцільну тишу, яка оточує темний брутальний малюнок. Це, звісно, цікаво, але слова б гарантовано зробили цю історію кращою, бо картинка, якою б гарною вона не була, не змогла витягнути усе на собі.

This is a daring, impressive work of art: 100pages of monochrome, gritty fantasy. Besides the introduction (a page of beautiful, epic text), those pages average ~one word /page. Adrian Smith relies on his graphic skills to tell the story and does admirably.
In short, Mother Earth is defiled and is bound beneath the ground; humanity falls from any grace it may have had. Men enslave other men, and a brutal Tyrant rules over many. Mother Earth’s spirit engages Worm, the protagonist, who is tasked to free her [or bring back her power somehow]. Her magic has seeped into vegetation since her death, so sentient fungi and roots play a role. She transforms or communicates to Worm as a white butterfly too.
Adrian Smith's illustrations are generally splendid. If you ever looked into any Warhammer/Games Workshop art (which Adrian has made many) and wished you could immerse yourself in a similar world (this is not part of Warhammer’s TM Olde World), this is your chance.
Enjoying/understanding this took some concentration and rereading of the prologue, which may turn off some but I found enjoyable. If I understood this correctly, Worm is out to find a key to unlock Mother Earth's chains/cage. Regardless of the low-text approach, I expected to have a better understanding of what to expect in the second volume by the time I reached the end. The number and motivations of the different, conflicting factions is still unclear. Vol. #2 promises to develop this more, which will prompt a reread of this. I plan to purchase the next as soon as it is available.

«Хроніки ненависті» Адріана Сміта виявилися абсолютно не такими, як я очікував. Я готувався до темного фентезі з темним брутальним малюнком, але зовсім не був готовий, що цей мальопис буде повністю базуватися лише на цьому.
На початку нам дають коротку передісторію про те, як світ пішов по пизді, планета опинилася в повній дупі, люди частково мутували, розбилися на різні групки і місяться між собою (чим же ще зайнятися в постапокаліптичному світі?) Уособлення Землі закували у кайдани, а владу над світом потроху піджимає під себе такий собі Тиран. Земля обирає собі неймовірно всратого героя, який має якимось хуєм її врятувати та змінити поточну сраку, яка відбувається у світі. На прекрасне та квітуче майбутнє. якщо хто думає, що я заспойлерив щось – не партеся, бо це все на першій же сторінці розповідається. Далі в нас починається сюжет і ми знайо��имось з маленьким стрьомним пиздюком, який і буде в нас головним героєм. І цього разу, коли я кажу «маленький стрьомний пиздюк», то саме це я і маю на увазі. У нас тут темне фентезі, якщо хто забув. Навколо бруд, сморід, гниль і купа стрьомних персонажів. Наш персонаж не сильно виділяється з посеред інших, окрім того, що він маленький. Він реально схожий на недоношеного глиста, якого народила зубата курка замість яйця. Але все одно він милий (особливо, якщо порівнювати з поганими уйобками).
Тож, найдикіша хуйня стається через кілька сторінок від початку коміксу – у ньому пропадає текст. Взагалі. Вся історія передається одними лиш малюнками. І це цікаво. Хоча місцями і є відчуття, що наданих кадрів мало для повноти усвідомлення подій, але це дуже охуєнно стимулює фантазію читача не лише самій домальовувати звуки та запахи, а писати свою історію в рамках того, що бачать очі. Це дуже цікавий і пиздатий досвід. В коміксах виданих українською вже була схожа річ – «Прибуття» Шона Тена, але я її не читав, тому для мене такий досвід був вперше. Тому я не можу якось оцінити сюжет, бо частково він покладається на те, як добре спрацює уява читача. І якщо уява розміром з півшишечки, то й результат може бути таким же. Тієї бази, яку дає автор, цілком достатньо, щоб оповідь вийшла захопливою.
Щодо малюнку претензії мінімальні – місцями просто занадто темно і ніхуя не можна розібрати. Точніше можна, але треба напрягти булки для цього. Це не дуже тішить в той момент, коли в тебе ще й фантазія працює для побудови сюжету. Але загалом малюнок пиздатий. Стиль автора ідеально пасує до темного фентезі, яке нам подають. Все гидотне, стрьомне, аж блювати хочеться. Кишки, кровяха, відірвані кінцівки та відрубані голови – все на місці.
Любителям темного фентезі та крутого малюнку має сподобатися, рекомендую.
Сюжет: 6/10 (оцінюю лише те, що дав автор, бо моя фантазія домалювала все до дев'ятки)

It is hard for me to give a 2 to this, since I generally love the work of Adrian Smith - but it is exactly because I know his work that this was somewhat of a disappointment.
I am OK with dark black & white art, I am OK with almost no dialogue, but I am not OK with a comic that is almost indecipherable without a big-ass intro text page, or art too blurry to decipher, or something that on many occasions looks like draft-work for something that was never finished.
The pages where the art looks finished are amazing, but those are not the majority. I realize it is probably a statement on this too dark, gritty and violent world that Smith depicts, but it still looks half-finished.
The plot is even interesting, as the one to try and save Mother Earth is (almost literally) a Worm, since worms are probably the creatures best acquainted with her, but the execution really makes the whole suffer.

Поборники відмови від читання коміксів через те, що читати в них немає чого, отримали вагомий аргумент - "Хроніки Ненависті", де тексту мало, бо оповідається все малюнком.
Так, лише малюнок. Інколи є звуки. Кілька фраз, і вони, якщо чесно, не потрібні. Все, що відбувається, споживається очима. Наратив та стиль чіпляють.
Це темнюче фентезі епічного розмаху про монстрів та кримезних волохатих чолов'яг з бойовими сокирами, які вирішують свої справи одним-єдиним способом - пусканням крові. А те, що вони свою прадавню силу в процесі майже знищили - для них неважливо. Але прадавнє божество знайшло спосіб повернути своє, скориставшись найнижчою ланкою у місцевому харчовому ланцюгу.
Приготуйтеся до чорно-білої палітри і розмазаних образів. На загальному плані вигляда круто, але якщо придивитись, то персонажі наче трохи розмиті. Така от межа деталізації. Втім, епічності це не зменшує, навіть коли на темній картинці темні фігури починають розмахувати зброєю.

HATE. I can't tell you I fully grasp everything going on in this graphic novel in one reading. Very few words are spoken, most of the story is told through pictures. I did meant o say pictures, as the artwork is so good it seems like I am looking at a black and white photo sometimes.
The world seems like a standard post apocalyptic one, Mad Max warriors here, mystics there... yet I am compelled to want to know more by the brilliant artwork. And there is an interesting connection between the Earth and the People at he heart of the story. i just can't tell what else is being said there.
I will read the second book if only to see more by Adrian Smith. And to learn something about what the hell is going on.

A Mostly Graphic, Graphically Graphic Novel
"An unlikely hero rises to free the Earth Mother from her chains." There you go. That's the entire story of this collection, pretty much all of the words that appear in the book, and more or less all you need to know. There is a one page Preface that elaborates a tiny bit on that one sentence story, but that's it.
And that was fine by me. I've read many graphic novels that have been weighed down by preposterous storylines, pretentious dialogue, and incomprehensible monologuing, and this beautiful and disturbing collection of artwork was just the antidote for that. You certainly can follow the general flow of the story easily enough. Can there be panels, or even full pages, that don't make immediate sense? Sure. But that's true of Beowulf too, and I still dig that. Indeed, this is very much like that epic, but with a majestic Earth Mother instead of Grendel's mother, which is nice.
You can pour over every page of this book, or skim it to get the general sense of the story and then return to favorite panels. I did the latter, but the book rewards multiple readings, and close examination, if you are so inclined. It's very dark and heavily inked and detailed, and so there is much to see but there is also much that won't become really "clear" no matter how closely you look at it.
While the panels tell a story and the work is "sequential", the book does feel more like a storyboard, and the longest "flow" is only a few pages, followed then by a gap and then a new scene. This takes some getting used to, but I thought it actually complemented the dark theme, the mood, and the story.
So, a triumph as an artwork, maybe a bit of a challenge as a story, but certainly an intriguing and oddly compelling achievement. A nice and distinctive find. (And if you want, you could enjoy the book just by paging through it and trying to count all of the skulls. A couple of thousand, I'd guess.)

Depressing, hateful and with a tender heart. Brilliantly drawn in the well-known style of Smiths, always grand in his display of foul creatures and general decay while actually displaying a story that makes sense and elevates this beyond just a gorefest.

Комікс виглядає чудово. Таке враження, що це артбук до якоїсь гри темної тематики diablo, dark souls або щось схоже. Але на жаль на фоні малюнку дуже-дуже мало тексту, тому десь на половині вже втомлюєшся від читання.

Hands down, one of the most detailed, gorgeously rendered and immersive comic books I have ever seen. The mind boggles to comprehend the level of artistic ability Smith puts on display here. The darkness, the decadence, the depravity. I would kill to have even a shred of this guys talent when it comes to his craft. Sadly, as amazing as the art is, the severe lack of narration or dialogue significantly holds this story back. If there were words, if only there were words, we would be looking at full marks here, assuming those words were good, that is. I would kill to be able to read along to a well written story to accompany this feast for the eyes, yet that is regrettably not the case. Without the story to go with it, despite the strong score I've given it, there really isn't much to return to here. Mt kingdom for some words to go with this. A cautionary tale in needing more story in your storytelling. 3.75/5

Hands down, one of the most detailed, gorgeously rendered and immersive comic books I have ever seen. The mind boggles to comprehend the level of artistic ability Smith puts on display here. В цілому прикольна задумка, але ось реалізація, як на мене, шкутильгає на обидві ноги...
Чисто візуальна історія, без жодних діалогів, де перед вами розкривається світ повний жорстокості, кривавого хаосу та ненависті... Але є певний нюанс... Вся історія намальована немов олівцем, і це головний мінус. Перед вами будуть зображені події величезних масштабів, але через спосіб мальовки, місцями все зливається в велику кашу і важко розгледіти всі деталі. А повірте, тут є на що дивитися. Треба було щось поекспериментувати з кольором. Я б напевно не сильно доколупувався до мальовки, але це головна фішка цього коміксу, діалогів нема...
Плюс місцями малюнок виглядає трохи розмитим, і я не можу зрозуміти, це так задумувалося чи це проблеми друку...
Фанатам артхаусу рекомендую...

The images are dark, brutal, and detailed. The language is sparse and used only to move the plot along (nothing poetic, philosophical, etc.). I found the story to be an interesting concept, but it just wasn't as gripping as I had hoped.
You can definitely see the Viking and LOTR influences in the images. The skirts made of skulls and faces left on dinner tables create a very dismal and brutal atmosphere reminiscent of Mordor, but the language of Tolkien is definitely not here.
Overall, it is aesthetically gruesome and awesome (if you're into mutants and murder), but lacking in any real commentary, resulting in a clunky plot.

Крута мрачнякова картинка, але окрім цього майже нічого немає.
Думаю, додати складний сюжет за відсутності тексту було б дуже важко, але цікаво було б подивитись на результат.

A brutal, grimdark fantasy tale. The book is definitely a showcase for the fantastic artwork of Adrian Smith. Some people will be very annoyed by the extremely dark art (I mean dark in the literal sense... most panel seem damn near pitch black). Personally I think it worked perfectly though. Also, a lot of people will be disappointed that there is virtually no dialogue or narration. I think it really works though.
