Scarves and Cowls: 36 quick and stylish knits

Gorgeous, colorful designs for scarves, cowls, and neck-warmers!

A scarf, cowl or neck warmer is one of the simplest and quickest things that you can knit. Whatever your skill level and however little spare time you have, Fiona Goble has a project for you. She has designed 36 scarves, cowls, and neck-warmers with something for everyone, from a snake scarf to a sparkly evening capelet, and from an extra-long “preppie” scarf to a cowboy-style bandana for kids. Every project has full instructions for knitting and making up, but most will need little more than the sewing on of a button to finish them off, and some can be knitted in an evening. An added bonus is that many of the projects require only one or two balls of yarn, enabling you to use up your stash of leftovers from other projects.

Scarves and Cowls - Fiona Goble

36 Quick and Stylish knits - from super simple scarves that are perfect for novice knitters, to textured knits that include lace and chunky cables the patterns included are:

1. PomPom Scarf
2. Twist Headband
3. Long Striped Scarf
4. Lacy knit Neck Warmer - I like this one. I could use up some of my royal blue WoolyHippo yarn for this. 💙
5. Patchwork Scarf - Reminds me of granny squares and I only like those for a blanket. lol
6. Roll-Neck Caplet
7. Pull-Through Scarf With Flower - I would make this without the flower👍🏻
8. Tweedy Keyhole Scarf
9. Boa Scarf - I’ve made both a Ruffle Scarf & Potato Chip Scarf and they are for decorative purposes only, not practical for the cold weather, but they do look great.
10. Lace Ripple Scarf - I love it! I wanted to make a blanket with a pattern similar to this at some point. I need a scarf like that. ♥️
11. Wide Scarf - Looks simple enough, and it’s chunky too! 💙
12. Rib Scarf - I’ve knitted a few ribbed Scarves (kids & adults) but not any as chunky as this! I loved ribbed knitting, but don’t like how long it takes on smaller needles so this is a must for me. ♥️
13. Waffle-knit Neck Warmer - Love the addition of buttons, need! 💙
14. Mega Chunky Cowl - just cos it’s Chonky! ♥️
15. Fur Collar - I love fluff ‘n’ stuff, this is super cute 🥰, but I’ve just bought one and Some Fur Cuffs! Maybe I’ll make it in a different colour.
16. Chunky Ribbed Cowl - Again love ribbed knitting and it’s chonky! 💙
17. Long Scarf With Pockets - Now, this is something I’ve wanted forever and I think everyone should have one. lol ♥️
18. Lacy Ruffled Scarf - As above, they look good but not necessarily practical.
19. Skinny Lace Scarf - Pretty, I have a newfound love for lace knitting, so simple yet effective and elegant. 😌 💙
20. Chunky Cable Neck Warmer - I think cables are best suited to jumpers, imo
21. Simple Caplet
22. Fine Lace knit-Caplet - No! I really don’t like it
23. Bandana With Tassels - I like it
24. Long Skinny Loop Scarf - I don’t like it
25. Simple Braided Scarf - I’ve not seen any like this before, they probably are out there but i just haven’t seen them. Now I want one! 😍♥️
26. Striped College Scarf - I like the idea of making this in a lighter weight yarn rather than Super Chunky. The stripes would look great as a summer scarf as I live near the sea! 👍🏻 💙
27. Hooded Scarf With Fair Isle Border - I’m torn. lol I love the idea, but I’m not sure about the fair isle. Plus I now have a similar pattern from Fiona’s other book.
28. Snake Scarf - I have seen better snake scarves than this, but I have no call for it anyway.
29. Twisted Cowl - love it 💋 ♥️
30. Long Lace Scarf With Braided Tassels - love it 💋 💙
31. Bandana Cowl - Small enough for my cats? lol
32. Striped Cowl - 👎🏼
33. Cream Caplet
34. Cable Scarf
35. Neck Warmer With Button Fastening - Cute, I really like it. I might need to buy some new buttons for this. ♥️
36. Moustache Cowl - I get that it could be fun for someone, but I personally don’t like it. I think it looks really tacky.

There are 14/36 Scarves and Cowls that I would love to make. And to think I was searching earlier for some inspiration, here it is. 👏 The middle of the book is where the best patterns are. lol

I love the photography. I received this book for as a gift and I have to say, there are a lot of things I would knit from it.

I had a bit of a problem finding yarn for the pattern I wanted to knit (Twisted Cowl). Not sure if it's because the wool the pattern requires isn't readily available worldwide? Or if it's not available to all Australian stores. Maybe I needed to go to a 'specialty shop'? Who knows.

What I do know is this, I found yarn similar to what was required, but it obviously meant the end result wasn't anything like what was pictured.

The pictures are nice though, patterns are clear and all the extra info you need for techniques, stitching, abbreviations, etc. is all there.
