If I hadn't learned from the back cover this was her first novel, I never would have known. I found myself holding my breath through much of the book. I empathized with Kate, the main character, on a few different fronts. I was a military wife, who spent a great deal of time as a single mother. I suffered from post partum depression. This novel is an excellent read. It takes the reader on a journey that is insightful and interesting. It helps bring understanding to the often misunderstood area of mental health related to childbearing.

I highly recommend this book.  It brought to light the often hidden issue of postpartum psychosis and how it effects women. The book kept your interest and was a very good read. I couldn't put it down because I had to see what came next. It makes a great book club book because there are so many angles of discussion.  Being a military wife and often being alone during child birth,
suffering through postpartum psychosis, and how the family reacts made for a interesting discussion.

I picked up this book and did not put it down until I finished it. I loved Gerdes writing style and fell in love with the characters. Gerdes takes a very serious subject, postpartum psychosis, and explains it in a way that lay people can understand. She weaves together the main character's personal story with a heartfelt and heart stopping love story about being married to an Air Force officer. An excellent book!
