Designed to be the perfect assassin, Kate is as beautiful as she is deadly―everything she touches, burns.

The government attempted to engineer a pyrokinetic the likes of which the world had never seen, but their plans went awry. Her power to command fire as a living extension of her psyche was more than they had hoped for, except for one problem. Her skin is hot enough to d

Daughter of Ash (The Awakened #4) by Matthew S. Cox is a book that had me glued to the pages! Oh my goodness! I have the other books in the series, and read two of them but out of order but it didn't seem to make any difference. This book was so awesome! This gal has been engineered by the government and they thought of her as a mistake. So at the age of 7, they were going to kill her but that didn't happen, she made it out. She is lonely because she can't have body contact because she is 6-800 ...more

Thanks to Curiosity Quills Press for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Kate is a killing machine though not as perfect as her creators intended... always switched on she burns everything she touches... clothes, food, furnishings, people. Escaping at the age of seven, Kate manages to pass the time killing for the man who showed her kindness, El Tío. With holographic clothing Kate strides in and takes care of anyone in the way. When she learns there is a way to cure her she

I really loved this book, I've read all the previous books ad this was really unique. My favorite is still the first book in the series but this was so extraordinary. Could you imagine burning everything that you touch or anything that touches you??? It really would be a terrible life. Kate does complain a lot but so would I in her situation. She's still awesome and I loved reading about her journey the Badlands. She'll go anywhere to try and find a cure to live a normal life and no one is stopp ...more

Cox mixes classic cyberpunk and near-superpowers with the emotional impacts of isolation to produce a fast-paced science-fiction thriller that is much more than fancy gear and wish-fulfilment fantasies

Warning: Information Hazard. This novel is the fourth in the Awakened series. Readers unfamiliar with previous volumes who proceed beyond this point might suffer damage to surprise matrices.

The government wanted to create a pyrokinetic orders of magnitude more powerful than normal. They succeeded.

Matthew Cox Scorches the Pages with Daughter of Ash
To begin with, I will get the required disclosures out of the way. Though we share a last name, Matt and I are not related. I received a copy of this book without compensation or expectation of a positive review.
I am nearly caught up with Matthew Cox’s book catalog, yet each time I near the end of the list, he releases another book. I do not like to give away too many spoilers, so I will not discuss much of the content of the book, concentratin

Review originally published at Book of Bogan.

This is the second book of Matthew S Cox's that I have read, after the previous book in the series - Grey Ronin. I immediately fell in love with the style of that novel, and was pleasantly surprised to find that his style continued into the fourth book in the series - Daughter of Ash.

The good thing about this series is that - although they are connected to each other - they are self-contained stories that don't necessarily require a great deal of pri

What would you do if you were manufactured by the government in their lab and then they deemed you to be a hazard and want to kill you . You take off and live on the fringe . That is what has happened to Kate a young woman who has the ability to start things on fire. She is always on fire and can't have any physical contact with anything or anyone . She is the perfect weapon and has done some killing for the man who treats her well . But that isn't enough she wants a life away from the fire . T ...more

Isolation from all society makes most of us break. This character literally can't get close to anyone. It makes her story particularly difficult. Finding allies nearly impossible. Deciding who to trust even more so. Yet ember of hope burns on throughout. Excited to see what comes from here.

So far, The Awakened has been a series that has moved a lot. A new main character at the start of each new book, but the same very interesting world that they try to live in. While some of them eventually come together, it is also a weakness, since you have to get to know the character each time over and you loose some of the bond you had gotten with the series.

Kate is a Midas-like assassin, only she burns everything she touches, inste

Too Hot To Handle

***NOT for the transphobic, homophobic, closedminded or feint of heart***

This series must be read in order. The first book is Prophet Of The Badlands. The second book is Archon's Queen. The third book is Grey Ronin. This is the fourth book. I can't wait to read Zero Rogue!

Kate was born a science experiment. When she failed to live up to their hopes, they tried to terminate her... So she terminated them. Becoming a killer at age 7 didn't help her adjust well. She lived in the woo
