This comic follows an unsettled girl being tormented by the Straw Man, a nightmarish creature that’s slowly working to drive her insane and eat her soul. The only friend she has is a peculiar librarian, and Penny’s world is a hostile place full of ghosts, mysteries, and despair. It’s an interesting premise for a comic, but it doesn’t live up to its full potential. The presentation of the setting, the absence of useful information, and Penny’s constant introspection prevented the comic from drawi ...more

I was given an advanced copy by the author, and boy was I the lucky one!

The artwork matches the storyline perfectly and this is one scary read. This is the story of a young girl who sees ghosts and has a boogieman named the Strawman destroying the lives around her. Her task is to change all that and she sets out to do just that.

Atmospheric at it's best with a story that builds on you until you have to remind yourself to breathe! This is a real spook of a narrative that you will not soon forget.

I received a free PDF version of this for an honest review.

The storyline is interesting and complicated at the same time. The artwork perfectly matches the tone the author sets with his writing and the feel of the story. This first season launches the comic well with an introduction to characters and different aspects of the world, while keeping options open for the future of the story. I would definitely recommend this story to others. I'm also interested in the reading the next portion of it.
I got this book for free from the Author in exchange for an honest review.

Penny Palabras can see ghosts, but right now they're the least of her worries. She's being followed by a Straw Man that speaks in cryptic rhymes and clearly means her a great deal of harm. All she wants is to get rid of him but as most things are, this is easier said than done. She teams up with the ghost of a librar

James Willard gave me a PDF version of this graphic novel for a honest review.

Grab your self a beverage it's going to be a long one.

Let's start off with the cover of the graphic novel. The cover is beautiful and genius knowing that the straw man is apart of Penny. Meaning that he is always around and I feel as though he is a huge part of her character.

The graphics and work is absolutely beautiful I give it 5 stars! Some drawings or most of the drawings for that matter are so

Penny can see the paranormal, which most cannot, and she knows that most things are not what they seem. She is currently tormented by a malevolent creature called the Straw Man and she desperately needs to figure out how to stop him from doing any more damage. As he continues to gain power while she looks for a solution, she starts seeing more and more ghosts, her nightmares won't let her sleep, her fa

I was given a copy of this book by the author in exchange for a review. The book starts out with a word from both the writer and illustrator. It explains where they are coming from, and why they created the book together. This does give the book some of its power, because it's a great independent comic that shows a lot of promise.

What I loved about the book was the artwork. Patrick K. Beavers does a phenomenal black and white job with a story that needs the treatment. His vision of the Straw Man

This is a very interesting and intriguing series that I really loved. The series start was a little abrupt and takes you straight into the action and conflict centered around the main character Penny Palabras. However, I don't feel like that interfered with the story at all, I liked it going straight to the action instead of sitting through a background sto

Won this book from GoodReads. This graphic novel was nicely written. Love the artwork that was done for this book. I feel horrible for Penny. It's such a freak twisting novel. Really wasn't expecting what was unraveled in the last few chapters. I could relate to Penny because I myself have nightmares most nights. I have some really twisted weird dreams. This book reminds me of bullying. Since the Straw Man and the tiger devil won't leave her alone. They are willing to help only if you do somethi ...more

I really enjoyed this graphic novel!
The art was different, interesting and it fit the story line very well. The characters were introduced nicely and I got to know them quickly and easily.
The story kept my interest the entire time. There was always something happening and always had the 'what is going to happen next?' question. Once I started reading I couldn't stop, the story flowed so well and it was always attention grabbing that I finished it in one sitting.

I thought this comic struck just the right amount of dark, and told a really unique and compelling story. I never did get used to just how fatalistic and morose Penny is -- not that anyone wouldn't be, in her situation. But she seems so accepting and well-adjusted to the horror of her life that, while reading it, I sometimes lost track of just how strange and terrifying the events were. I absolutely loved the cast of creeps, though; these monsters and demons were some of the most genuinely frigh ...more

*Disclosure I got this book for free*

While the art is a little rough I think it really feeds into the character of the story.

In some places though the text can be a little hard to read.

Moving on. I am going to seek out the next book because I do REALLY want to know what is going to happen. This season wraps up an arc, but leaves the greater mysteries to still be solves.

It took me a little bit to be fully engaged, but once I was I was invested in the main character.

Intriguing storyline, unique artwork, compelling characters. The perfect beginning to a new comic series. We get the first few steps into Penny's bizarre world before season one comes to a close, leaving you wondering what's going to happen.

This is definitely a story to keep your eye on. Who will she run into next, where will this story eventually take Penny? More please.

"You don't have to see ghosts to be haunted."

This, I believe, is a main theme of Penny Palabras, Season One.

What I would say about the comic is that it is kind of like a good steak sizzling on the grill... it gets you salivating without offering ultimate fulfillment or closure. I mean this in a good way because, as a serialized story, the reader is left wanting more.

The book can be read in one sitting. This is also a good sign; even if it takes a couple of hours to read, the writing and exciting

I was lucky enough to win this on the Goodreads first reads.

This is a really excellent graphic novel. It was very entertaining. First, I would like to say that the story is well developed. The art in the graphic novel is also amazing. The two elements were so perfectly matched that this graphic novel will be enjoyed by many.

Penny Palabras is a teenage girl that is faced with her future. She is fighting her demons. The story is very relatable. Everyone goes through a point where they are faced w

** spoiler alert ** I got this graphic novel from the author in exchange for a review, which in no way influenced my review. So I want to note first that I did not get the entire comic just good chucks of it.

It's a great read first off, a perfect creepy factor, as well as a good glance of horror and story line. Penny is a very interesting protagonist, and the other characters are flawed. For those who are fans of gritty comics this is right up your alley. I read this at night and immediately ha

The first season of this series was over too soon! The art style is unique: a bit rough at times but that only adds to the power of the artist's style, especially in some of the darker scenes. I read this graphic novel because I liked the premise of a girl dealing with an unwanted connection to the spirit world. With only a few main characters, Penny's story is deep and personal. The devils and the Straw Man are each deliciously creepy in their own way (I hope to see more of them in season two), ...more

Penny is a girl haunted by the straw man who pulls pranks ,
now she must find a way to stop him. Penny can also see ghosts of the recently
departed. I really enjoyed the illustrations and the plot was like a maze I could not predict what would
happen. I also liked that it was a dark story with a little hope mixed in.
I would recommend this graphic novel for 16+ due to some dark points it might scare a younger child.

A Goodreads First Reads giveaway!

This graphic novel is a perfect example of why I love comics. If someone had told me about the story (if it were written in prose), I'd probably be reluctant to read it, but as a graphic novel, I readily jumped right in. Sadly, the further I read, the less I liked it and less interested I became in what was happening. The art, in black and white with gray tones, is perfectly serviceable and appropriate to the story. I see potential in the art, and think Patrick B
