Revealing over a decade of images created during the development of EVE Online , DUST 514 , and Valkyrie --this is the ultimate look at the most massive and dynamic universe in video games!
Created in close collaboration with the developers behind each game, this gorgeous full-color hardcover immerses readers in New Eden through hundreds of stunning, never-before-seen pieces of art. With in-depth commentary by CCP throughout, this is a must-have for any fan of science fiction, video games, or jaw-dropping visuals!
I don’t play Eve Online but I like art books and spaceships, so this is up my alley. Too many of the pictures are on double-page spreads, so the art is compromised. Sigh. But what you can see displays a great variety of ship designs, as well as vehicles, characters and landscapes.
This is one to borrow from the library rather than own due to the poor layout, but it’s full of designs that range from cool to weird. I didn’t get much of a sense of the game from this, but as I’m not interested in playing, that’s of no importance.
this is a book I have had my eye on for a while - for no better reason is that my fasciation with all things Science Fiction is still very much live and kicking.
Now I will say at this point I know of the game but have never played it and probably never will - partly due to the fact I would be terrible at it - and partly because I would hate to ruin my impression of this massive universe by trying to explore it.
So why the fasciation - well like all these games, realism may be a second though (and yes the authors did admit that they too a little poetic license with aspects of the game) but the visuals are stunning.
For me this where my imagination as a child would have ruin riot- and the fact that the creators of the game give such a candid and open account of where the various aspects of the book (and game) come from you just cannot help but be sucked in it all.
Sadly though these sort of books were not around when I was younger - (if they were I suspect I would be even poorer than I am now) but it does not stop me now from feeling some of the wonder and excitement now as I turn the page.
But there is more than amazing images and incredible concepts - there is the story of the game, how it was designed, how it came in to being and a hint of the huge amount of work that went in to it - and I suspect still does. These games does not appear over night and the amount of material created that never will see the light of day - a tiny fraction of which appears in this book - is truly breath taking.
Excellent tasty treat for any Eve Online player, including former players. I'm not sure the art stands on its own without this context - it's well done, but probably too overwhelming for non players. I've definitely enjoyed it - I'm not a fervent player, but I love the look and feel of CCP's universe.
A wonderful book - especially at Amazon prices - showing the visual development of New Eden. It methodically goes through virtually every visual aspect of the game, including some very detailed exposition of some not-seen-before items like turrets & ship-mounted guns. what does an ice harvester look like? now we know. A very good addition to any Capsuleer's library.
