All action all the time in this swashbuckling adventure story with a touch of romance, sculpted bodies, epic gladiator fights, a touch of the supernatural, desperate chases, kidnapping. Not time for reflection or much romance in this volume, but the main characters, Adrian, a young boy, and his mother, Marianne, do finally catch up to mysterious swarthy hunk Richard Aldana, our bad boy hero, or is it anti-hero, we're not completely sure yet. They're all on the run finally from the fight ...more

We're always excited when a new volume of Bastien Vives, Michael Sanlaville, and Balak's LAST MAN series comes out! These books are so fun and exciting and magical -- they're like popcorn; you can't just read one.

In this book: yet more action and adventure occur, secrets are revealed, and also business intrigue happens!

How can you resist?

J'adore! the art is exceptional, the story is whacked out awesomeness.

Things have really heated up in this volume. All sorts of politics going on with both sides of the Eternal whatever-it's-called. The modern world has brought vicious killer fighters back from the dead and are going all out to capture Marianne and Adrian. The ancient world has seen a prophecy and the King is reinstating the Guardians. This is all real serious stuff and very intense. But won't make sense unless you've read the other volumes in order. Great book! Can't wait for the next volume!
Having found Richard Aldana in Paxtown, Marianne and Adrian have settled in for awhile and even met his former wife, Tomie. Paxtown is a despicable place, full of addicts, thugs, and blood-thirsty citizens. As the plot continues to unfold, readers learn more about Richard's reasons for leaving the Valley and Marianne far behind. As he and the Velbas face off enemies from every direction, they also find some surprising new allies as well. I'm still waiting to find out more about Cristo Canyon, ...more

I read this series for the energy and the three main characters. This volume still has some action and character development, but too much time is spent with secondary and tertiary characters explaining some of the behind the scenes stuff happening in previous volumes and setting plots into motion for future volumes. It's still well done, but nowhere nearly as engaging as the first four books. I have hopes for a return to form in volume six.

Whereas previous volumes focused on the various fighting circuits that Adrian, Richard, and Marianne get caught up in, The Order introduces what amounts to a team of supervillains that the trio need to defeat. It's certainly unexpected after previous volumes, but no less amazing. Twists arrive at a head-spinning pace. Battles are wild and thrilling - kudos forever to Vives skill at loosely, yet accurately depicting combat. The end cliffhanger opens the world up even further, leaving the fight ...more

I love this series. The art, the action, the drama, and turns. Love the world setting and magic too! Great stuff.

Predictable, yet worthwhile. The world-building is finally coming together. The secret society trope is overplayed, but the writing and characters are just good enough to make it worth a read.

The Order
Vol. 5 of The Last Man
Balak + Sanlaville + Vives
Brought to you by OBS Reviewer Scott

Once again, this volume of The Last Man saga relies on knowledge of the previous four volumes. However, it makes an exciting jumping on point. The Order ramps up the action seen in The Last Man series, adding in mystery and intrigue and a little down time in amongst the high octane fighting that has become staple in the series of graphic novels. This volume

This fifth volume of the Last Man (which will make sense only really if you read the three: The Stranger, the Royal Cup, The Chase & The Show.

The main characters, Adrian, a young boy, and his mother, Marianne, have left the Valley of the Kings to find Richard Aldana, the anti-hero of the first four volumes. They end up in a city where another fighting championship is taking place, run by drug dealers and crooks: Richard is a past champion, coerced into fighting again, Marianne and Adrian

My hand's down favorite volume of the series so far. Things really come to a head in this volume and the plot boils over. Marianne and Adrian have been taking the fighting world in Paxton by storm, but their unusual surroundings, including the drugs, violence, glitz, and slimy people begin to take their toll on Adrian. In this volume the complicated plot begins to pull tighter around the necks of our heroes until it begins to feel almost claustrophobic. Tomie quickly emerges as one of my new ...more

Read as digital ARC

Just when I feared the plot had moved away from the part of the story which really gripped me (magic, Valley of the Kings, etc) some Royal Guardian thing looks like it might be happening, and I am allllll about it! Vives really knows how to add to the story, branch out into new territory and then work in the elements that are what got us hooked in the first place. Also some of the burning questions you prolly still have do get answered...But not all of them, of course! Staying

Okay maybe naming your imprint '01' isn't a great idea when you put it on the spine of your book and I accidentally buy the 5th book is the series because it has '01' in big letters HEY I am a DUMB ASS. Good art/cool shading/kill me.

Un grand retour en force. Certainement un des meilleurs tomes de la série. Rempli d'action, une évolution spectaculaire de l'histoire et une suite prometteuse.
