About the author

Howard Ernest Gruber was a scholar of cognitive psychology who was noted for his books on the development of Darwin's thinking on evolution.

He graduated from Brooklyn College in 1943 and received his Ph.D. in psychology at Cornell in 1950. From 1967 to 1986, Dr. Gruber taught at Rutgers University, where he was the founding director of the Institute of Cognitive Studies. He also taught at the University of Colorado and, in the 1960's, at the New School for Social Research, where he rose to professor and department chairman at the Graduate School. He later held the Piaget Chair at the University of Geneva and until 2000 was an adjunct professor at Columbia's Teachers College.

La teoría de la evolución mediante selección natural no fue un chispazo durante la travesía del Beagle por las Galápagos. La observación de los picos de los pinzones no fue el detonante. Cuenta Howard Gruber que Darwin tuvo que lidiar con el contexto asfixiante del pensamiento religioso que reinaba en torno a 1837. La evolución de sus conjeturas, la observación de todo cuánto le rodeaba, fueron sembrando lo que veinte años después sería una revolución científica dentro de su ámbito, un cambio de paradigma. La creatividad en el ámbito científico necesita del respaldo de las teorías propuestas y Darwin sabía que lo que tenía entre manos no sería aceptado sin argumentos sólidos.
Así mismo queda reflejado en este estudio que se necesita de períodos de descanso para continuar centrado en la investigación, incluso es necesario sentir aburrimiento para que la mente sienta la libertad de conectar nuevas ideas.
Es bastante útil conocer estudios psicológicos sobre la creatividad de personas que lograron lidiar con la opresión social sacando adelante logros que promueven el beneficio de la humanidad.
Algunos puntos destacables y que yo desconocía de Darwin son: su profunda aversión a la esclavitud (un sentimiento que le viene de familia y que le hizo enfrentarse con el capitán del Beagle) y el hecho de que se haya entendido mal su desafortunada elección de la frase “lucha por la supervivencia” entendida como violencia, batalla o guerra entre individuos o animales cuando lo que quería significar era que esa lucha se establecía con uno mismo por la supervivencia no contra otro. Por último, añadir que el creacionismo fue la gran barrera que le impidió hacer públicas sus ideas pero le impulsó a investigar y afianzar en profundidad sus teorías.

Gruber examines Darwin's notebooks to consider how he developed his theory of evolution and in particular his thoughts on how this relates to human beings. In doing so, Gruber develops his own theory of how creativity manifests itself in human beings based on Darwin as a case study.

The book looks in-depth at Darwin's notebooks and in so doing dispels the myth that his pathway to developing the theory of evolution by natural selection was a linear story of slow but constant progress. We see Darwin's early misconceptions. We see his thinking embedded in the thinking of his era. We see Darwin struggle with questions he cannot answer. But above all, we see into the mind of a thoroughly brilliant, creative man and there are definitely lessons we can learn from this - lessons about creativity and lessons about how to be more effective learners ourselves.

I am fascinated by Darwin as a thinker and fond the book super interesting.
