This is the earliest book published by Leicamaster, Ralph Gibson. He received his early photographic training in the US Navy and further polished it at an art institute. He was also fortunate to work as an assistant to legendary photographer, Dorothea Lange.
Artists should never be compelled to explain their work to others. Gibson associates his imaginative photographs to their neighbors according to his own tastes and desires. Here he exhibits his early work in the diptych format: a satisfying formulation which he will continue to perfect in the decades ahead. I was glad to study this rare, early collection and am eager to view all his other books (of which I now own five).
