The Single Mom's Devotional: A Book of 52 Practical and Encouraging Devotions

Rate this book
When Carol Floch realized that her marriage was about to end and that she was about to join the ranks of moms left to raise their children on their own, she could not stop crying. She mourned her shattered hopes and grieved the loss of the family she had always dreamed of. But mostly, she cried for her children. Into Carol's grief, regret, and fear, God's Spirit came with a message from Psalm 84: Build your nest near my altar, and I will be your children's source of security, protection, provision, and blessing.

In The Single Mom's Devotiona l, Carol tells her story and shares with the sisterhood of single moms how they can build their family's nest in the protective shadow of God's presence. Single mothers, whether on their own after a divorce or a husband's death, will discover how to find true life in Christ and allow the strength of that inner life to be the compass by which they navigate an unpredictable future. Near God's altar, the cross of Christ is where single moms will discover life through relinquishment, power through dependence, and hope through surrender. Anchored at the foot of the cross, readers will find daily security and hope as they nourish their souls and nurture their children at a place near God's altar.

I'm actually not quite done with this yet, but pretty close. I have been reading one section per week for almost a year. What I really like about this particular devotional is that, unlike so many other "single mom" books, it really does focus on a true single mom's perspective. Not "I was a single mom for a minute before I married my current husband". Some entries resonate with me more than others, but overall, a solid book.

I have read many books on the topic of broken relationships, and this is one of the most helpful. "Forgiveness, reconciliation and restoration are stand-alone pieces of the healing process. Forgiveness lets go of ill will toward another for a wrong suffered; reconciliation negotiates an acceptable way to reestablish the relationship; restoration repairs and rebuilds the relationship as it was originally intended to be. When we practice forgiveness and initiate reconciliation, we live out the love and grace God has shown us. Restoration, however, hinges on the lived-out repentance of the other person and requires that healthy relationship boundaries are clearly established, understood and observed."

I truly loved this book. As a newly single mom, every night's devotional spoke to my heart. I read it with a pencil in hand and noted every verse that resonated with me. I hated to finish it and am re-reading it now. I will recommend this to every single mom I know.
