An equally enjoyable follow-up to the first book in the series, which introduced readers to the very memorable Lady Isabel Wilde. Holly West weaves another intricate web in Mistress of Lies, with a colorful cast of characters and the page-turning pace of a thriller. It will appeal to readers interested in historical fiction, as West paints a vivid scene of 17th-century London, and it will satisfy those seeking the twists and turns of an accomplished mystery. And then there is the main character, ...more

The historical setting is very well done. The plot a bit less so.
Claire - The Coffeeholic Bookworm
Lady Isabel Wilde was infamous for being one of King Charles' mistresses in London. What the people didn't know about her, however, was that she had another identity that enabled her to know their deepest and darkest secrets. She disguised herself as Mistress Ruby, a soothsayer/psychic/fortune-teller at night. One day, a little girl named Susanna Barber stepped on her threshold and told her that she was her long-lost niece, the daughter of her dead brother Adam. Isabel learned from her niece tha ...more

“Life is for the living, Isabel. Let the dead rest.”

If only Isabel could. Mistress of Lies finds Isabel searching for the truth and possibly even her brother this time around. Mistress of Lies picks up three months of Mistress of Fortune. Lady Isabelle is confronted by a girl in rags who claims to be her niece, the child of her brother Adam who Isabelle believes died of the plague. At first Isabelle thinks that the story is all made up, but the girl called Susanna has compelling evidence that Adam is indeed her father. Susanna wants Isabelle's help, she says her father did not die of the plague, but was murdered. When Susanna disappears, Isabelle is compelled to find ...more

The second book Mistress of Lies was better than the first in my opinion. You could read the second book first if you want because it does not take away from this books plot, but you might feel like you are missing something like characters history and development from the first book. Still the second book is good and introduces a new character who I liked, Susanna. The plot of this one was gr

I really enjoyed this historical novel, even more than I enjoyed Mistress of Fortune. I give it 4 rather than 5 stars because I did not enjoy this ending as much. Overall it was a great novel, and while reading I found myself hoping for a Prequel! Love the characters and the romance with the King.
