Not even sure how to begin to tell you about this book. I read 'For Nicky' by this author a while ago, and although the author tells you these books were written as stand alones, it is definitely best to read 'For Nicky' first, then 'Because of Beckett', I am very pleased that I did and was captivated by the story, there was one character in 'For Nicky' that I hated, so when I found out the author had actually written a new story with this character in, her name is Audrey, I thought to myself, no chance I am reading that, well I changed my mind, simply because I wanted to know how the hell the author was possibly going to be able to change my feelings for this character Audrey, that I am sure many have hated, well I was blown away by this story, the author actually turned my feelings around and it's 'Because of Beckett', this writer has so much talent, I only hope my review does this book justice.
This is a very touching story, Beckett son of Jeremiah, was born with problems, his father loved him regardless, it was his son, beautiful baby boy. Beckett's mother on the other hand was a totally different story, Shelly she's called, she couldn't care less about being a mother to Beckett or a wife to Jeremiah for that matter, she was unfaithful constantly, bringing so much shame to Jeremiah, boy did he try to be a good husband but she literally
walked all over him, in my eyes she is a nasty piece of work, she can't possibly have a heart, not wanting to love and care for her child, Beckett is such an inspiration, a very wise old man in a four year olds body, he is loved by everyone he comes into contact with, no wonder his father is so proud of him and how Audrey fell in love with him.
Audrey has never had any friends, closest people to her are her father and sister Libby, who she bullied for years, her mother died when she was just a little girl, her father filled with to much grief never took care of his girls properly, when they were young Libby couldn't wait to go outside with her friends especially when her father's friends would come over but Audrey would stay home hoping to get some attention from her father and his friends, unfortunately her father should have paid more attention to Audrey, you begin to understand why Audrey grew up the mean girl that she was, she thought she was taking control of her life but really she was destroying herself.
The author writes about child molestation and rape but does it in a very tactful and compassionate way, it's hard to read about things like this, nobody wants bad thing to happen to a child but it sometimes happens, it is how life can be for so many.
Beckett and Jeremiah take a chance on Audrey, you will understand that everything good that happens is because of Beckett, while reading each chapter I began to pray that there would be a happy ending to this story.
I feel like the author gave me a challenge when she wrote this book, almost like she was saying I dare you to read it and not change your mind about Audrey, well challenge accepted and she won, I didn't think it was possible but I was wrong. thank you for writing 'Because of Beckett' and helping understand Audrey's story, I really look forward to read more of your books.
