As radiation poisoning creates a swath of death and destruction throughout Hama, Syria, the operatives of the United States' Counterterrorist Center must find--and destroy--the manufacturers of a pure-fusion neutron bomb before another one is detonated. Original.
Pure Fusion by Bill Buchanan had a really interesting premise, especially for someone like me who is very interested in nuclear weapons, radiation effects, and war toxicology.
The technical and geopolitical aspects were engaging enough to keep me reading, and the concept behind the neutron bomb scenario was genuinely intriguing. You can tell the book aims for a tense, high-stakes atmosphere built around the fear and fascination surrounding nuclear technology.
However, what held this back for me was the portrayal of the effects on survivors in Manhattan after the neutron bomb detonation. The depiction of radiation symptoms and survivor experiences felt exaggerated or inconsistent in ways that pulled me out of the story, especially if you have prior knowledge or interest in radiation biology and nuclear weapon effects. I was hoping for a more grounded or believable representation of acute radiation exposure and its aftermath.
Overall, still an enjoyable read for fans of nuclear thrillers and military fiction, but the scientific portrayal of the bomb’s human consequences didn’t fully work for me.
