An interesting and informative overview of the history of the Great Escape which goes into detail of events before and after the actual attempt. The book corrects some of the many myths that surround the story, especially those that appear in the film. Well worth a read for anyone interested in these remarkable people and their exploits.

I've been a life-long addict to prison stories, whether civilian or POW, and this is a nice addition. It covers ground I was mostly familiar with, but there was quite a bit I did not know about and that was a great addition. It is pretty well written, though repetitive at times. The persistence, ingenuity, and bravery of these men and their exploits described herein is well worth anyone's time.

The last book finished that I brought on holiday . I wondered if it would be just like the film but it went much deeper and you really got to know the men and how appalling it all was . Sounds like the film was a good snapshot of what happened but there was so much more going on .

I disagree with some of the author's presumptions at the end of the book but that didn't detract from my enjoyment of it. Interesting, well written, engrossing and often entertaining.

Libro Recomendable.

Very interesting book - not just about The Great escape - but about RAF officers as POWs in general. In the early part of the war they could go on parole into nearby towns, go on skiing holidays with senior prison officers, and the Germans even provided wallpaper for them to decorate their huts. Book was so interesting I even watched the film again - and it wasn't even Christmas!

You've seen the film now discover the real Great Escape. Sets the whole event in a much wider context of POW conditions

Paul Brickell was the author of the original 'The Great Escape' published in 1951 and he was one of the internees of Stalag Luft III, but not one of the escapers. Tim Carroll's 'The Great Escapers' provides a fuller account, which for those who only know this remarkable story from the 1963 film based on Brickell's book, will eradicate many discrepancies.
First of these, there was no Steve McQueen character hurtling around the countryside on a motorbike, in fact there was no American in the seventy six that escaped in March '44, nobody stole a light aircraft and many other scenes and characters were fictional.
I always find the truth far more poignant than fiction and Carroll's book is expertly researched to expose the ingenuity and courage of the allied airmen who were determined to cause havoc behind enemy lines irrespective of the danger. Of the seventy six that tunnelled out of the camp only three made a 'home run', two Norwegians and a Dutchman. Fifty were shot. Per Ardua ad Astra!
