I went back and forth on this and I think it's because I just really couldn't pin down the tone. Some of the apocalypses described (getting attacked by Big Foot, vampires, etc.) seemed silly and farfetched. And others (social unrest/rioting, wildfires, earthquakes, etc.) are very real. And so the lighthearted, kind of funny tone just veered all over the place for me. I couldn't figure out what this book is--is it taking survivalism seriously? I think so, based on the credentials of the authors. But then why so many demonic possession scenarios?
Anyway, there is good information in here and your lovers of survival fiction will enjoy it. It's well written and interesting. I had contemplated bringing it on school visits, but I don't think it's the right fit for my community in that way, although I'll happily promote it to individual kids in the library who can't get enough of survival stories.
It makes sense for Prepping Podcasters to write this book. Middle grade kids and up will learn about supplies and procedures to prepare for hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, zombies, and so much more. There are several scenarios that are real and necessary for kids to understand the need for preparation. The payoff comes near the end of the book when the authors takes the advice and turn it to prepping for Zombies, aliens, asteroids, and an AI tech takeover. I know my junior high kids will rush to check this out of our library.
Think you know how to survive an apocalypse? Thumb through this book and see how many of the survival skills you have. An interesting and slightly different view of surviving in a disaster. This may be a funny way to help kids find ways to survive in a true emergency. Many of the survival strategies are designed for use in situations that are possible and can help children cope with the situation if it ever arises (no, I don’t think vampires will attack, but a flood, tornado, hurricane or wildfire are all extremely dangerous and can happen anywhere.)
Both of my kids (8 and 11) were paying special attention to this book. It was a hit with them. While some of the events might seem farfetched, I thought it gave good advice of what to do in case of emergencies. I liked how it was also funny to read.
BEWARE though, your kids room might remain messy because of what was said on page 34 😅.
